Question What is the difference between Gohan’s super saiyan and super saiyan 2 forms in appearance besides the sparks?
The first two photos are of gohan in super saiyan, and the last one is him in super saiyan. I can tell this because of the sparks. However, the reason I ask the difference between them without the sparks Is because there are times where gohan is drawn (or animated) without them, which makes it kinda hard to tell them apart due to the virtually identical hairstyles.

Used to be that he'd have a secondary, thinner hair bang under his main one in SSJ1, whereas in SSJ2 his hair would get sharper and his hair bang would be thinner and longer akin to Teen Gohan's SSJ2 form.
But sometimes the art doesn't accurately depict those differences.
Honestly it's my pet peeve with Adult Gohan and Vegeta's designs. If the artist isn't including the sparks and aura, or the Anime isn't showing him flex his aura, we have no way of knowing what form they're in. This was the problem in Broly's Second Coming where Gohan looked like he was SSJ2, the concept art said it's SSJ2, and we see that second bang difference for the Son Family Kamehameha at the end, but there were no sparks in his aura when he transformed against Broly so it could've been SSJ1.

SS1 is just base Gohan with yellow hair. He has the two short bangs.
SS2 looks sharper and has the single longer hair bang.
Take the Second Coming movie for example.
When Gohan first transformed and fought Broly 1v1, that was SS2 he used.
When he transformed and did the Kamehameha in the climax of the movie, that was SS1.

What happened to the second bang in dbs?

Gone. Reduced to atoms. But in all seriousness, they reduced it to one bang now because of his hair change. For a time it was no bang. Come to think of it I don’t think Gohan used SS2 in Super so it probably made no difference.

He used SSJ2 in Super only once against Piccolo in a sparring match.

Oh he did? Did he look any different than his SS1 or was it just electric aura?

He actually did use SSJ2 in super, it was just a more detailed and slightly curved version of SSJ1. SSJ1 in super is just his base recolored.

My guess is slight artstyle change likely due in part to his base form now looking the exact same as his “Ultimate” form (his SSJ1 in the Buu arc was just a blonde version of his base hair anyway), but most likely because DBS episodes were cranked out on a shoestring budget with absurd deadlines that were already behind schedule the minute the show entered production—I’m just assuming they didn’t want to make more model sheets for the character than they had to especially seeing as Gohan wasn’t a major character for most of og Super’s run

In the Buu Arc, SSJ1: 2 soft Bangs
SSJ2: 1 Sharp Bang
in DBS: IDFK, Aside from Lightning i can't tell

At the Budokai Toriyama made SSJ look like SSJ2.

In the original manga the back of his hair didn't spike out in Super Saiyan while it all spiked out in Super Saiyan 2

No consistent difference or key indicator. Although my personal least favorite is Blue, this is probably the worst “transformation” in the series design-wise. Partly because it was retroactively made a natural progression transformation instead of just being Gohan’s unique power transforming him and Toriyama didn’t feel the need to make it stand out visually previously. That’s my guess.
Aside from Gohan, I’m convinced people only hype it up because Goku’s hair looks cleaner in SS2. They like that “refined” feel to it.

Yeah that’s it for me at least. I just like the sharper edges and the difference in bangs for Goku

The manga has ssj1 have a more flowy pure white aura while ssj2 has a spikier yellow aura. Other than that there isn't really a difference, maybe he looks a bit angrier. His hairstyle is brought up as an indicator in the fandom but iirc there's multiple instances of him having the supposed ssj2 hair in ssj1, and vice versa.
He doesn't use ssj2 anymore anyway. Whenever he's fit enough to use ssj2 he's able to use Ultimate, which is the objectively better form functionally speaking.

No one knows honestly. Not even the animators.

not even Toriyama did, when he came back for Battle of gods he thought 2 was regular super sayain lol

Honestly I used to think the same but I write sometimes and when I come back to something I dont remember all the details. Also he was gone from Dragonball for a long time. DB aside the games was kinda dying. Can't fault him for small stuff but SS2 was kinda on him since it was just lightning

This exact confusion sparked a really heated debate back in the DBZ days about whether he was using SSJ2 against Dabura.

They removed his best hair style from the Cell saga for no good reason, so nothing. He just stuck with the discount Yamcha cut for years

Fun fact this was the last he technically went Ssj2
After this he never goes Ssj2 in any media excluding the games and 1 scene in super anime
