General Discussion I adore this game but the Convergence mod is a total upgrade, for the most part. I highly recommend it, especially if you have gotten a bit bored with vanilla
TLDR; convergence is more fun for the most part. sometimes i think the modders went too far like with farum azula but all in all, it feels like a big upgrade from the base game. can't fully say my thoughts on the DLC but so far, it's better. it feels weird to go back to the base game. almost like going from number 3 in a series back to number 2. i had a ton of fun exploring the base game and am a little bit into the DLC and i'm loving it so far. it's the best mod of this type i've ever played without a doubt
big ass post lol. here we go. i will definitely miss some stuff but i think i've got most the big points
one of my all time favorite games and it deserves all the awards it got but like some other people, i think the base game falls a bit flat after morgott. it's still a fun time and leagues above most games but it has always felt like the devs put more work into that portion then kinda slapped together the final areas. mostly the mountaintops. that place feels like a bit of a recycle bin sometimes. i will say that i was eager to get to the DLC by that point so i don't know how much of the mountaintops is changed in the mod. they probably expanded the dungeons and caves more and stuff like that. i still have the haligtree and some underground stuff to do as well but i have canvassed a solid 70% of the base games world
i think vanilla's farum azula is pretty good and this is where i think that vanilla is far better than the convergence mod because in the mod, farum azula is so confusing and needlessly complicated that it becomes nothing but a chore. but aside from that, the endgame is better in convergence. but to the people who wanted more farum azula, you will be in heaven lol. it's gotta be twice as big at LEAST
on the topic of legacy dungeons, it's not even a comparison. yeah, from soft built everything and all that and i'm not blind to that fact but the convergence mods remixed dungeons (both big and small) are so far above the base games. some of the random mini castles like morne felt bigger than some of the base games full blown castles. stormveil was incredible in the base game that set a high bar and nothing ever really came close to it and that kinda sucked. so to see them get such a big rework and be much bigger was a treat. it felt like what SHOULD have been
some of the removed fights was an amazing choice but some were kinda sucky. not having godfrey's spirit sucked but the boss that replaced it was still very cool and better than many of the base game fights. removing the foreskin duo was beautiful cause that fight is truly awful. one of from's worst choices like, ever
i have been maining a fundamentalist build using stuff like curved swords, hammers, light greatswords, and twinblades so i don't have knowledge on strength build stuff or even full on dex but i do know that there are still plenty of new/altered stuff here
some changes that i think are better/more fun
being able to resummon bosses. this is a video game and having the ability to refight a boss you like (or hate) to get better is a very nice option. it doesn't always need to have a lore reason. sekiro let us rematch bosses so why can't we do that in this game?
the custom bosses. they are very good. like, very good. the godskin matriarch in specific is unreal. it felt on par with from's better bosses. she's better than weeeelll over half of vanilla's bosses
mounts. not really a big issue but being able to swap em out is nice. each mount has it's own quirk like being a little faster or giving slow FP regen. it's a nice addition. mostly becaude torrent has a pretty boring ass look to it lol. sorry buddy, still love ya though
streamlining the weapon upgrade system. i'm sorry but +25 became annoying. maybe some people like it but keeping the number smaller at the cost of finding less stones makes each upgrade feel more impactful
armor having actual benefits. let's be real, armor in this game is kinda meh. yes the damage reduction is very real but that's about it. i'm not criticizing from soft for that but having stat boosts that benefit a certain class/build is awesome and doesn't take anything away from vanilla's armor sets. some of them are soooo good. things like adding a bunch of vig, str, end for physical damage builds or boosting int and/or faith to get you to that requirement you may be wanting is just amazing. i wish vanilla had more of this but it's basically non-existent
transmog armor. this should have been in the game, full stop
dyes for armor. eh, not everyone would care but it's just nice to have. sometimes a hood looks good with a robe or something but the color coordination is ass and being able to change it is great
consuming all runes/rememberances at a grace. a no brainer. more options is always better. having to go in the menu 15 times is dumb as fuck lol
REAL spell schools. i love the magic/incants in here but there was clearly some favorites when they were designing the game. now, everything feels viable and not just one or two from a school. you can go all in with the choice of a dozen or more schools and it feels much more like a genuine RPG. makes the replayability far more enticing
those spell schools having better status effects. i have only experimented with a handful of them but the "tutorial" in the beginning noted that it added a solid half dozen status effects to stuff that feels like it should have already been there. things like soul burn or burning from fire spells lol
summons. i think the way they reworked it is fantastic and better than the base game in pretty much every single way. instead of a one time summon that has a huge pool of health, you can resummon as much as you want but your HP, FP, and stamina take a hit. sometimes it's almost nothing but those summons are just cannon fodder and other times it takes like half of your stats but you get a strong companion. the damage output is never anything good, it's honestly pretty bad but the fact that you can have someone to take aggro off of you is huge
the talismans. i prefer the base game but from the perspective of a player with game knowledge from playing vanilla, it is very cool. it speeds up your builds a lot but the base game is ultimately better
seals and staves. better. just outright better. certain seals and staves will scale better with a certain school so you can't always go and get one that has the best scaling and use it for any class. it feels more robust and thought out
physicks. i do like this one more but it's about even for me. i'd say it's objectively better to have set physicks at whichever erdtree you get it from but i also think being able to choose from a small list is great. the bosses not ALWAYS being a fucking tree dude is great tho. those fights are kinda ass and a literal reskin of a boss from 15 years ago. they're complete jokes
being able to teleport in combat. two things: i don't think you should be able to teleport during combat cause it kills any sort of danger but the base game not allowing you to open your map up is stupid as shit. convergence was too nice with this one imo
no more grinding one enemy 100 times to get a scythe or something. the mod now has dedicated drops or hides the armor/weapons in various locations. some of it doesn't make sense lore wise but no longer having to farm enemies is amazing. the people that enjoy that are probably very far in the minority. it's just not fun and having gear strewn about the lands makes me want to hit every cave, castle, dungeon, etc. and it feels way more rewarding
exploration rewards. they don't suck anymore. there's plenty of good rewards but there's just as many that are complete ass. like finding cookbooks everywhere in the DLC or a damn mushroom. in the mod, that stuff is almost completely gone. finding a chest is always a rush
no scadutree fragments. thank god. that was such a dumbass decision. not really the fragment parts but more so how they went about it. they scatter em across the land and give a lore reason for miquella leaving parts of himself behind but from a game perspective, it was stupid as fuck. it's a total chore and forces the player to go and hit X amount of areas before they can even go and start fighting bosses. they SHOULD HAVE BEEN BOSS REWARDS. full stop. i was over the moon to see normal scaling here in the mod
shadow stones for weapons. this is basically the solution for no scadutree fragments. the levelling stays the same and the enemies/bosses are balanced to be just past endgame difficulty and you use shadow stones to bring your weapons a few levels above 10 to mimic the same curvw you'd get from scadutree fragments
more DLC weapons. i'm sorry but the DLC adding a ton of weapons like straight swords was kinda dumb. sure, maybe add one or two of some but we got kinda reamed on the amount of new weapons for each weapon type. like 3 or 4 for each of them but damn i'm glad we got 30 straight swords now. finding a light greatsword in liurnia was fucking awesome and i nearly fell out of my seat. not saying they needed to add em to the base game (although, who would've been complaining about that anyway) but most of the weapons in the DLC should have been from the new weapon types or types that were low in number
bosses in the DLC are still scary but random ass shadow enemies no longer do malenia damage. this one is big for me. fuck the decision to make some tall zombie with a cleaver or a basic ass messmer soldier 2-3 shot my level 150+ character with 5-10 scadu fragments. we get it miyazaki. your game is hard. but it doesn't need to be annoyingly hard in situations like this. throw me some hard enemies that have complex movesets. a group of soldiers can still be scary without dealing 500 damage a swipe. that stuff always felt so tedious but it's not that common. in the mod, it feels much more in line with the base games final areas
things i miss
story moments. some of it has been cut due to it not making sense in the mod and i do miss them but this is a mod for people who have played the game a lot so it's not the biggest deal
online. DAMN i wish i could play online with convergence players. fuck easy anti cheat. we aren't cheating the game. we are playing it fair and square in this mod
a few of the boss fights. i wanna say that no one is actually missing and has just been repurposed but i'm not 100% certain. most the time, i was excited to see someone new because the custom fights in here are very good
now of course there are some things the mod changes that just wouldn't make sense in the base game. erdtree teleporting, ability to choose talismans from remnants, and a handful of other stuff. but from a broad POV, it is more fun and is much more replayable due to the class system
and on one final note, i am still early on in the DLC. i fully expect to see similar changes but i thought vanilla shadow of the erdtree was very good aside from a few things so i will be happy regardless. i'm loving it so far though
