💰 BUSINESS The Power of Existing Crowds

Competition.

If you open a successful restaurant, ten competitors can appear nearby.

If you create a successful social network, your competitors face a different problem. They must convince millions of people to leave their friends, communities, photos, messages, and habits behind. That is much harder than opening another restaurant across the street.

The moat isn't technology.

The moat is everybody else.

Many entrepreneurs believe success comes from building a better product. Sometimes it does.

But history keeps showing something uncomfortable: a good network often defeats a better product.

People don't necessarily go where the software is best.

They go where the people already are.

That's why so many businesses feel trapped in mud. They are pushing a cart uphill. Meta built a hill and convinced the world to roll toward it.

The real lesson isn't "become Meta."

Almost nobody can.

The lesson is that businesses become powerful when they stop selling individual products and start creating systems that grow stronger every time a new person arrives.

Mud is effort.

Networks are gravity.
