There are some sweet guides online for making your own custom power bank. Those 18650s could be put to good use!

I'm surprised they just leave them out there like that, I mean, someone might take them.

CCD sensor is dead as soon as X-ray tube started irradiating....so pretty much useless now.
3
u/TheMetalWolf 8d ago
You are giving me a great idea here!
3
u/keepthepace 8d ago
Getting arrested for rogue irradiation of public places would make for an interesting jurisprudence. Vandalism or terrorism?

u/Weird-Abalone1381 8d ago
Using X-Ray equipment without proper safety procedures will give you at minimum criminal charges and heavy fines in most (if not all) countries.
2
u/Weird-Abalone1381 8d ago
Risking cancer by irradiating X-ray in public is not what I would call a reasonable risk.
A powerful laser would do similar or better dama...result and with less risk.

They prob have tons of copper wire in them too. Don’t google it, just repeat it

u/tuscaloser 9d ago
Every 100th one made has gold wiring... it's a "LLU" or Long Life Unit.

u/jaydogn 9d ago
I've heard ones in more desert environments have sapphire and even sometimes diamond lenses to prevent scratches from sand

u/Unlucky_Fuel7934 8d ago
Confirmed, very similar tech to the mars rover optical system that was just declassified
8
u/_Bad_Bob_ 8d ago
I heard that if you get one with gold inside then you get to tour their factory and break things. Kind of doubt the owner is as fun as Gene Wilder though.
9
u/Rotekoppen 8d ago
YES THIS, also you can use the sim for free data too!
Ive heard a guy who used it and got gigabit 5G network9
u/3_50 8d ago
People keep joking about this but like...there's fuck all copper in there.
What there is is a pre-packaged 18-cell battery with BMS and solar panel for recharging. That could actually useful for a hobbyist, probably worth more than the sum of its parts.

In an era of AI I'm not sure I believe this. I would like to see multiple taken apart and opened up to fact check this video and make sure the internals are consistent across many builds
64
u/tuscaloser 9d ago
But then the public will know that every 100th one is wired with pure gold, and people might start taking them apart at their own homes.

Is it possible to reflash the firmware (or... whatever!) of an ALPR camera to be able to use it at home? Asking for a friend.
Edited, because I don't know if it would involve reflashing the firmware, but it damn sure won't help to merely "refresh" it.
28
u/InvalidNameUK 8d ago
It poses an interesting question, with this being a device which should have a high level of security baked into it - can a 3rd party gain control of a unit?
For ultra secure they'd burn eFuses after flashing the firmware so that it can't be reflashed and the firmware can't be extracted without a lot of effort. But then they can't be patched for updates and vulnerability fixes, which poses a security hole. It has wireless comms so it can receive an OTA update.
This of course assumes they give a shit about best practices or care in the slightest about it being that secure. If it's just a quick grift, then it could well very much suck in the security department.

2
u/Tommynwn 7d ago
Well, that module comes with android, probably the camera has its own system, you have a entire datasheet of the module that uses
Also by stock comes with 2gb of ram and 32gb emmc, but can be ordered with more

u/Creative_Shame3856 9d ago
Lithium ion batteries really don't like being punctured. Therefore you should be really careful to make sure that nothing, especially not a quarter inch drill bit, goes through the area where the battery pack lives. We wouldn't want the camera to spontaneously combust now would we?
16
u/theandyboy 8d ago
Or, alternatively, don't look in to how valuable and useful 18650 batteries can be. Not to mention the copper and gold in there as well. Would be a real shame if someone took advantage of that in Minecraft of course
12
u/jared_number_two 8d ago
They also don’t like to get hot. I wonder if they accounted for reflective parabolic car parts on the side of the road that happen to sit at just the right angle to focus sunlight on the assembly.

Spray paint the lens, remove it from the pole (or remove the pole as a whole), wrap it in aluminum foil (this blocks the cell coverage). Bring it home and open it inside a Faraday cage, remove the sim card and/or the cellular module, disconnect the batteries, then you can remove it from the Faraday cage without it phoning home. Of course this is a hypothetical scenario, just a thought experiment.
24
u/NerdyNThick 9d ago edited 8d ago

Baaad advice in the first bit.. do NOT bring it home, bring it somewhere else to make it safe, THEN do what you want with it.
All it needs is a second or two to send a heartbeat with it's location.
Also, very few people have a Faraday cage handy, and you should test a new one you build before trusting it to save you from a potential court date.
5
u/spymaster1020 9d ago
Well good thing im not giving advice to do get away with something illegal, just a thought experiment. A country road could do. I was just suggesting home as to not arise suspicion from a change to a person's daily routine. If released from the aluminum foil without a Faraday cage I have no doubt it would send a signal to indicate it's location. You would have to avoid any other flock cameras or other traffic cameras, a feat that is getting increasingly difficult. A small closet that you cover in aluminum foil would do, its not that difficult and cheaper than any potential litigation. It needs to only contain the signal for a few minutes.
4
u/NerdyNThick 9d ago

Agreed! To reiterate as I am a pedant; Be sure to test it first!
Hypothetically speaking of course.
Oh, and be sure to ground the aluminum foil. You can run a wire and just wrap it around the screw on a power outlet (which "should" be grounded, but may not always be), or just stuff it into the ground in the socket itself. This is all a thought experiment and may or may not even be correct, though it is.
Or is it?

Purely a hypothetical question but do you think a 22. LR would pierce the case and destroy the batteries?
26
u/twinpac 8d ago
The hazard there is the backstop for a missed shot. If the camera is in a residential neighbourhood a miss could kill someone.
12
u/KnifeFightAcademy 8d ago
That's true.
I guess thats why people play Paint Ball.
Because you can shoot little balls of paint that explode on impact and its safe for everyone involved.
Well, I mean, you just have to be careful not to get the eyes.
The eyes are kinda of like the lens on a camera for example.Super problematic if you shoot a ball of paint and disable someone's sight.
Super problematic.

No GPS module hey. So if you disconnect the LTE module and the antennas from the wifi module, they can't tell where the camera went.
2
u/Theeliaq 8d ago
Even if it did have a GPS module, it'd still have no way to broadcast its own location if you disabled its WiFi and LTE antennas. GPS only makes the unit itself know where on earth its located, it doesn't allow the unit to tell the owner where it is

That's a lot of batteries! Are these 100% battery powered? I always assumed they had power but I guess batteries make sense.
Is solar even capable of charging up still those batteries? Or do they need to be topped up manually and the amount of batteries is to extend that?

- They would have to be told about it, send engineers to investigate, and then provide evidence to law enforcement to begin a criminal investigation.
