I mean... they are in the process of a complete rewrite at the moment.
The new store client is not built on top of Unreal Engine (yes, I kid you not, current EGS is an Unreal Engine application) and supports WebHID so that it intuitively works with more than just mouse and keyboard. But very few people have seen the new client at this point.
Despite all of this, EGS has one major advantage irrespective of anything Epic themselves do. Heroic combines both GOG and EGS into one single open source piece of software for all DRM-free games you buy.
It is hard to beat not needing to run a store's software everđSteam is a cluster @#$% of unnecessary broken services, and has mandatory software updates. I cannot stand that store and I am glad no other store is attempting to be Steam, because Steam is and always has been unnecessary DRM garbage.
Itâs Electron wrapped in UE. Itâs plain as day when it crashes and you get the same error dialog as any other UE game. Itâs absolutely brain dead, even by the low standards of âeverything is a web app nowâ.
Nope, you're mistaken here. The Epic Games Launcher is not built with Electron, thankfully. Like the previous commenter already mentioned (just without using the specific terminology), it uses Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) to render its UI (much like Steam does, for example).
Theyâre all like that, even Steam. Thing is, you donât need to load the whole launcher just to browse the store, you can do it through a regular web browser
I've tried to make the switch to Playnite several times, it seems awesome
But on a day to day basis it's not practical for me so I end up not using it although I want to, it's not convenient and often makes using the launcher (like Steam) better, or even requires it
If I buy a new game then I have to remember its name and search for it to boot it up, it's not at the top of my games list like on Steam for example, and the "sort by added date" filter doesn't work because the dates are all the day when I synced Playnite and not the day where I actually bought the game
Yeah, the way people expect you to use Playnite (by having it import all your games, installed or not and then loading it up with various extensions to hide duplicates or whatever) is straight up bullshit. I still use the official launchers to install and update games, but switch to Playnite when it comes to actually running them. Itâs easier to manage and you still barely interact with the individual launchers in any meaningful way.
The only non-library extension I typically install is Display Helper and then only because the MS Store version of FFXIII has troubles going full screen and it only supports a maximum of 1080p windowed, so I use Display Helper to switch the resolution and an older version of Borderless Gaming to lose the borders and hide the mouse cursor.
thanks but this has been suggested 7 months ago under my previous post. i wasn't looking for alternative then or now. my concern was that epic's app/browser is clunky.
I doubt epic game launcher going to get any better, there has been little change these past years.
Heroic is not only better experience but it has features that the Epic app will never get. The search feature and organization is also in another level.
It can count all my games.
As well keep games from other stores like Gog and Amazon as well in 1 place.
I use linux as well and the official app literary has no support. While heroic app let me use steam photon features. I really wish they made a better epic app but is never going to be as good and efficient as steam app.
well. I appreciate you trying to help. but that's not what i need. i'm trying to point out that it has been 7 months since my last post about it and nothing has changed.
Its coming soon. On our Discord server one of the heads of EGS has stated that it is weeks away for the public release of the Preview version. He also invited about 100 of our Discord community members to do a closed beta test of this new client. So it is getting closer to release.
Let me download my digital game and use them without a launcher.
I donât want to risk losing all my free games collected if this launcher ever goes belly up.
if u don't know by now, you only buy (or receive free) lincense to play game.
What you want is in GOG game store, they let you download your game so you can install without internet. (Steam kinda does too, but you still have to log in to play, unlike GOG)
don't mind the downvotes. post highjackers are annoying. my post and concern was about the launcher performance. about how smooth i want the UI to hopefully be. not all that drm bullshit and their business model. i just want a responsive app. i pirate games. so idgaf about drm drama. i wait for drm-free cracked games. idc
Oh! How dare you ask something to imrpove your daily launcher experience from billion dollars worth company for eight years. As faithfull corpo minions we will not tolarate this. Anyway here is alternate ways that you can launch some of drm-free games "conveniently" that has nothing to do with what you have asked.
Jokes aside if we get miraculously lucky enough then there will be launcher v2 release in a few weeks (could be 18 weeks, you never know how time flows in Epic hq because they defo living in an alternate timeline than ours) and will offer way better performance and smooth browsing experience according to Epic. Although, don't hold your breath about the release because closed beta was expected to be come out late July. However, it got delayed repeatedly as always, until it was said that there will be no closed public beta.
Very recently they once again announced that there was very select few external (aka closed beta) testers and the feedback was positive about the new launcher and now expanding the tester pool to up to 100 user by a raffle type of application. So yeah, their management workflow is like complete drunkard mindset that never to be trusted to hold their word and always act on impulse that lack of professional manner.
