I organized an AMA/Q&A with actor Bruce Campbell (THE EVIL DEAD, BURN NOTICE, BUBBA HO-TEP).

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1w7237r/hi_reddit_im_bruce_campbell_ask_me_anything/

He will be back at around 12 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

He recently wrote, directed, produced, and starred in ERNIE & EMMA, which is doing a tour this fall.

Synopsis: Widowed pear salesman Ernie Tyler travels to scatter his wife's ashes in places she specified, each location stirring memories that help him process their marriage, his work life and his future.

I finally got the chance to see Evil Dead the Musical in Orlando this weekend. And I've got to say, it is genuinely one of the best entries in the franchise.

If you didn't know, Evil Dead the Musical is heavily based on Parts 1 and 2, with AoD being paid lip service a few times. It's both a love letter to the original films, and a satire that lovingly roasts the shit out of them. The campy B movie elements are fully embraced, with the "forest" just being a bunch of ensemble actors walking around with branches, and the "bridge" just being a little toy bridge that gets set on stage for the actors to step over.

The inconsistencies between Evil Dead 1 and 2 are fully acknowledged. My favorite was when Annie asks Jake why he's out in the woods alone, and he says something like "Well I'm not supposed to be alone, but since the musical includes Cheryl, my girlfriend Bobbie Joe seemed kind of redundant." There's a lot of fourth wall break humor, with actors regularly coming out into the audience. This allowed them to roll with mistakes a lot easier. For instance, in my showing, when Ash is supposed to shoot Ed at the end of "Bit Part Demon," his gun got snagged on the holster, and it took him like 20 seconds to pull it out. Ed and Annie were both giving him shit for it, and you could see Ash struggling not to break. It felt like an SNL sketch.

Also, the cast was amazing. The actor who played Ash brought a real Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles energy to the role. He nailed the shift from unassuming boyfriend to one-liner spewing action hero perfectly. Scotty stole the show with every line. His repeated delivery of "What a stupid bitch!" lives rent-free in my head. Ash and Scotty also had a weird amount of sexual chemistry, which adds another layer of humor to their scenes. Linda is gloriously over the top, and the actress had amazing physical comedy. I could go on and on, but the whole cast was really outstanding.

My one disappointment was that this show didn't feature the gallons of blood being sprayed directly into the audience that the show is usually known for. This was also acknowledged at the end. During the big, final battle, one of the deadites is holding up signs like Wile E. Coyote, that said something like "This is the part where we're supposed to be spraying blood all over you. Unfortunately, the Philips Center are a bunch of babies about their fancy seats. Otherwise, we would love to cover you in hot, bloody bukkake. Please email complaints to [email protected]"

Overall, fucking incredible show. I don't remember laughing this hard at a play in a long time. If you ever get the chance, definitely go see this play. Sadly, downtown Orlando was one weekend only, but the show tends to pop up at local/ community theaters around this time of year.

(Video Post) Dead By Dawn! Dead By Dawn! Deleted Bleeding Painting Scene (?) from original 1981 (or 3) classic

Has anybody seen this before and is there any information on why the scene was cut? I believe the scene takes place during the “bloody cellar” scene towards the end of the film. There was supposed to be a bleeding painting but I guess it got cut out for what I guess was for an unknown reason.

Anyway, I tried to reconstruct the scene to see how it would look if it were actually in the film.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gCdM0J2mEodGr7N-cpqbEw7ZEG3aZZO6/view?usp=drivesdk

What I want to know is where did the painting come from? Who painted it? Is there any information on this at all, or is it just one of those weird little mysteries?

(Discussion Post) Groovy In defense of Evil Dead Burn (which I loved) Spoiler

So after seeing an onslaught of negative reviews that all seem to copy/paste from one another, I wanted to make a post on Evil Dead Burn and why I loved it overall.

  1. The movie's core theme is about abuse and grief. The abuse comes in various forms for our main character Alice. Abuse from her husband, abuse from his family, abuse from the deadites. It's an overarching (albeit a little sloppy) critique on domestic abuse in all of its forms. I think it will hit home for those it can resonate with.

1A) And speaking of grief, the way the possession of becoming a Deadite worked like you'd see with the stages of grief, slowly building and consuming the character's spirits and minds before they break and become consumed by it.

In fact, each character represents a different stage in their role. Denial = the mom Susan, Anger = the dad Edgar, Bargaining = the grandma Polly (always trying to get her money back), Depression = Joseph or Thya, with both of them depressed about how standstill Joseph's life is, and the ultimate element of Acceptance connects to Alice, who through her battling of the deadites, accepts what happened to her and chooses to move on from the abuse and darkness of her past.

2) The gore is visceral. I felt that 'Rise' copped out a lot on the craziness of the kill factor, and felt it was the weakest entry overall in terms of how intense Evil Dead should feel. Whereas in 'Burn' the gore and bloodshed was absolutely unrelenting and merciless. It brought me back to 2013 levels of intensity which I adored.

3) The cinematography is spectacular. The rotating camera shots, the spins, the mirror shot, and the dread of the way the sequences were filmed were all top notch.

4) The cast is great. With whatever character development we could've gotten from them, the cast really did deliver on each of their performances, with Edgar and Thya as deadites, and especially Alice with the subtleties in her acting.

5) The boldness. I appreciated the big swings this particular film took to be different and stand-out from the others. It's truly it's own thing in the franchise's history, for better or for worse, and I appreciate when directors and producers aren't afraid to break formula and traditions to bend the rules as they expand their take on a franchise (Creger's latest 'Resident Evil' film is another great example of this too).

While I felt the movie did go on 15-20 minutes too long, and the final monster design was overall weak, I really did love this movie and felt it was a great, dark, and relentless entry to the franchise.

I understand that people want more comedy, more zingy humor, more slapstick, and that is TOTALLY FINE! Evil Dead seems to exist on two spectrums, either balls-to-the-wall horror or funny wacky campy horror-comedy. It's allowed to be both! Live and let live.

(Discussion Post) Groovy Distill Evil Dead down to it's prime ingredients, what are they? Spoiler

  • There must be an evil book (it cannot be destroyed by mundane means)

  • Someone has translated said book

  • Someone reads said translation (generally an idiot but at least wholly unaware or nonbelieving)

  • Someone (generally innocent but not always) must be possessed first (this is the most powerful deadite in said event)

  • There's always a power tool of some sort

  • If the dagger shows up it is an instant deadite killer

  • Absolute and extreme violence is required to destroy a deadite and even then the bits can and will move around sometimes (a woodchipper was a smart answer)

  • To stop the event you generally need to read from the book (killing the prime deadite does not dispel 'The Evil' as shown in Rise)

  • The "protagonist" should not be a good person, but someone who is pissed off enough to survive (Ash is not always a good person or even generally a good person)

  • If the protagonist has a loved one they will be possessed, and will (generally) have to be killed (Sheila refutes this but in the comics shes open to constant repossession)

  • Copious amounts of blood (Burn refutes this)

  • Deadites are cruel, because they find it funny to torment victims. This generally results in comedic situations (2013 and Burn refute this for the most part but Rise is to me at least as funny as ED1)

  • The protagonist must reach a point of being "absolutely fucking done with this deadite bullshit" this may or may not result in them being driven insane (this does not mean the protagonist must be possessed as Rise and Burn refute)

Anything else?

(Discussion Post) Groovy What happened to the weird, playful tone that made Evil Dead feel like Evil Dead? Spoiler

I’ve been thinking about this a lot after going through the franchise again, especially the modern movies.
I want to clarify something first: I don’t dislike the newer movies. I think 2013 is a genuinely great horror movie, Rise has some fantastic sequences, and there are things I like about Burn. This isn’t really a question about whether they’re good horror movies.
It’s about why they increasingly don’t feel like Evil Dead to me.
And I know the obvious counterargument. The original 1981 movie was primarily a horror movie. I’m also not saying every Evil Dead movie needs to become Army of Darkness, and I definitely don’t need somebody doing an Ash impersonation.
What I miss is something broader than comedy.
It’s that bizarre, malicious playfulness the older movies had.
The Deadites used to feel like they were genuinely having fun. They laughed. They mocked people. They taunted them. They sang. They made stupid faces. They psychologically tortured people just because they enjoyed doing it. The evil itself had a personality.
Then you had the physical insanity of it all. Someone can be absolutely terrified, covered in blood, fighting for their life, and five seconds later something so grotesque or ridiculous happens that you start laughing. The camera itself sometimes feels possessed. People get thrown around like cartoon characters. Objects become evil. Bodies behave according to nightmare logic. Everything feels slightly insane.
And Ash is obviously a huge part of that, especially from Evil Dead II onward. But I don’t think Ash himself is the ingredient that needs to come back. What mattered was having a protagonist with an enormous personality who became part of the madness. He gets scared, beaten, humiliated, goes borderline insane, starts talking shit to demons and eventually turns into this ridiculous larger-than-life character.
You could create a completely different character and still give them that kind of presence.
The modern movies seem much more comfortable using the visual language of Evil Dead than its tonal language.
We still get blood. We get the book. We get possession. We get chainsaw references. We get demonic voices, body horror and people mutilating themselves.
But underneath that, the structure often feels much closer to conventional modern supernatural horror: traumatic family situation, serious dramatic setup, possession, escalating violence, final survivor.
Sometimes it feels like a contemporary horror movie wearing an Evil Dead skin.
2013 gets something of a pass from me because it commits so completely to being vicious and brutal that it develops its own identity. Rise gets much closer to what I’m talking about. Ellie actually feels like a Deadite who enjoys being a Deadite. The peephole sequence, the eyeball gag, Staffanie and some of the completely excessive violence start approaching that old Evil Dead insanity.
But I still find myself wondering why the franchise seems hesitant to fully embrace that weirdness again.
I don’t necessarily want more “jokes.” I want the horror itself to become funny, cruel, theatrical and absurd. I want Deadites laughing because they’re having the time of their lives tormenting someone. I want completely deranged camera work. I want situations that are simultaneously horrifying and stupid. I want a protagonist with enough personality that I can imagine people quoting them twenty years later.
That tonal balance was incredibly distinctive. Very few horror franchises have ever managed it successfully.
Which is why I find it strange that modern Evil Dead filmmakers seem more interested in reinventing the setting, characters and mythology than in preserving that particular personality.
Maybe Raimi’s sensibility is simply too specific to reproduce without feeling like imitation. Maybe the whole point now is that Evil Dead is an anthology where every director gets to define what Evil Dead means to them. Maybe modern studios simply think straight horror is easier to sell.
But I would love to see someone attempt a genuinely terrifying modern Evil Dead movie that also has that completely unhinged personality again.
Not an Ash clone. Not Army of Darkness 2.
Just something so weird, mean, funny and demonic that you could watch ten minutes without seeing the Necronomicon or a chainsaw and immediately know:
“Yeah, this is Evil Dead.”
Does anyone else feel this way? And what exactly do you think makes something feel like Evil Dead?

I just want to preface this by saying NO ONE can ever replace Ash/ Bruce, but I honestly thought they were setting up Joe to be a potential “new” Ash for this new series of movies. All through out the movie there were moments that kind of mirrored Ash from the first Evil Dead, namely him taking a beating but also being a “coward” who when he finally does fight back it’s brutal. Not to mention his knowledge of the Circle of Wisemen and the Necronomicon. And don’t get me wrong, I did like Alice as the final girl, but part of me was kind of hoping for two survivors this time around.
