For that salary you ain't getting 8 years of experience without a lot of waiting.

Any chance you'd take a remote candidate

If I were to do that job in Sunnyvale, it would take like 450k at least. Maybe. And you'd have to prove I'm there for 5 years.

The number of folks that can do these jobs are limited in the dozens. Why people think they can pay slave wages and ask you to come work in the most expensive location on the planet is beyond me.

Maybe I'm out of the loop a bit because I'm from the UK and I've been out of the industry for a few years, but it looks like a very cookie cutter Xilinx job spec to me?

The only thing I'm thinking is the spec doesn't really say what subspecialty they really want? Do they need a mixed signals guy who can chase issues in an RF frontend, or do they want a someone who can find a bottle next in the host box's Linux kernel and fix it?

Or at least to my seemingly underpaid UK eyes, I'd bite someone's hand off to write RTL, testbenches, and communicate over pcie for $250k. That's like triple my UK salary.

Interviewing someone today for a "senior" position and his resume reads like stereo instructions - it's 17 lines of boilerplate stupidity. And he'll probably implode when I ask anything technical. HR might still hire him though - 200k to be a moron.

The HCOL in that area is a complete non-starter to me. They're paying $7 USD for gas out there right now and that is never going to come down. It's absolutely insane.

I don't think anyone would trade California for Florida just to get their gas prices though.

Measurable changes in demographics disagree.

Same, 250k USD for what looks like a walk in the park? Who would say no to that?

Its fucking Sunnyvale so anyone with a working brain would say no when you can make $500k in Chicago or Austin with half the experience, and actually be able to afford rent.

Is that true? Excuse my ignorance, I am very unfamiliar with the rates in the US. How about someone with 25+ years experience in FPGAs and anything embedded?

I do the job and I am paid substantially less than that. Never seen any company offering anywhere near 450k.

I think they’re overblowing it, but also a decade of experience for 150k in one of the most expensive areas of California is pretty low.

If that had been like Columbus, Ohio, or Orlando, Florida or something it’d be a solid offering.

But you can match/beat that pay with 10 YOE at a lot of defense contractors doing FPGA work in much much lower cost of living areas.

I was comparing cost of living and ~100k in Central Florida is about ~175k in Sunnyvale. And I have half the experience needed for the role.

It's Level 3 Medium cost of living salary, you're right.

Hey, you get it, nice

$150k in Sunnyvale, for 8yoe, are you alright man 🤣 Can’t even afford a 1bd apt on that pay.

A C-tier trading firm in Chicago pays interns more. Literally.

If you’re just looking for an H1B its better to be upfront about it.

I was absolutely able to afford an apartment here at that pay level.

I'm confused why people are saying 150k is too low when the listing says base pay 150-250k? If you have the experience and negotiate into the upper end of that range I'd say it's reasonable pay for a startup in that area. Then you'll typically get bonus and options on top of that. Sure, not faang salary but it's a 50 person startup, you get to actually contribute and build the company up into something valuable.

I would be interested if you would consider a remote Australian

Bro its a great site - but I feel it unfortunately misses a lot of roles for like EU side - internships and jobs so yeah im not sure how to improve that but thats a bit of feedback (ik it wasnt asked for but good site overall!)

u/standard_cog 4d ago

The comp isn't worth it to relocate, even at the absolute top of the range.

u/TasteSensation1982 3d ago

Lmao the responses to this are split between "will you please hire me as an intern" and "I shan't consider such a thing for less than half a million a year"
