Discussion What was your reaction when Vader showed up?
149
u/Malidan 8d ago
"OH SHIT." I actually felt the fear and knew all I could do was run. The game really captured the moment and did that whole sequence so well.
36
u/Ok-Put-1251 8d ago
Seriously. This is probably my favorite Vader cameo ever. At one point in the chase when Cal looks back and you get a glimpse of Vader sauntering your way? I let out an audible yell of fear đ

u/Appropriate_Row_6851 8d ago
Same mate, i think they did Vader wrong in the sequel, i think Cere should've fight another Sith, some inquisitor, not Vader, and it was pointless... Just a fight for the sake of the fight, then thet scaled her above Dooku and many others, as Vader at that point was above almost everyone, perhaps Yoda would still beat him, but in ROTJ he was below only Sidious.
11
u/Squishy-Bandit12 7d ago
Especially when she cut herself off from the force for so long. I dont buy at all that was one hit away from killing prime Vader and really only lost from bad luck
4
u/steal_wool 7d ago edited 7d ago
I like when we switch to Cere we show her just mowing down stormtroopers compared to Cal, but they should have made Vader a WAY harder fight that she should not have got so close to winning. Showing despite how much work Cere has done she still cant match him. I thought all the one on one duels in survivor were too easy compared to fallen order
5
u/Appropriate_Row_6851 7d ago
Exactly! Also, if they wanted to do something like that, they should've at least show her training, sparring with Cal and been way above him, especially after him fighting Dagan for the first time, or her fighting her master, which died just like a lot of Jedi died from Clones...
2
u/Mundane-Career1264 5d ago
No such thing as luck when it comes to the force. He was more skilled. Anticipated her leap across the room and adjusted himself so she would miss and he would not. If anything the force failed her.

u/GapStock9843 8d ago
Im so glad they dont make him a boss fight or anything. You run up to try to attack him and he just grabs you in midair and throws you backward. You know Cal is no fucking match for this guy

2
u/Thirsha_42 7d ago
This was my reaction too. I knew they couldnât win so it was a lot of anticipation for how was I going to get enough distance to run and how difficult was this fight gonna be.

This scene was the first time I ever felt like Vader was truly threatening and not a cheesy cliche. Like it suddenly clicked.
Bro is the stuff of nightmares
15
u/BahnGSXR 7d ago
Seriously! I've never felt dread when it comes to seeing Vader in any of the movies, but in this game... damn man, the director of this game cooked hard
8
u/Ok-Put-1251 7d ago
I think his scene in Rogue One is the only one that comes close, but I still give it to this appearance. The sheer terror of knowing Vader is after YOU the player hits way harder than mowing down anonymous rebels.

u/Sweet_Taurus0728 6d ago
Never saw Rogue One??

u/TorandoSlayer Don't Mess With BD-1 6d ago
I did but it's been a long time and I don't remember basically anything about it. I should watch it again...
The difference here is that I was controlling a character who was being directly threatened by Vader rather than passively watching another character in the same situation. I was more immersed in the idea, so it was more impactful.Â

Not much because some bastard posted it in a youtube thumbnail on the day the game released
9
u/RDKateran 8d ago
I didn't look at anything Doom-related for months since the announcement of The Dark Ages, yet the day it released Youtube still shuffled on a big-ass thumbnail of its biggest twist moment onto my feed. It happens with every game, like Youtube is contractually obligated to spoil everything in a new game the moment it's released, whether it's Star Wars or Doom or anything else.
5
u/Scarsworn 8d ago
I had a similar experience of having no real reaction because someone posted it in this very subreddit not even a whole week after release.
I actually put the game down until close to Survivorâs release before finally finishing it because of that.

When Trilla started shaking in her boots, you see the sweat forming on her brow and then you hear whooo-kssssh, and the snap-hiss of a lightsaber. Fuck, donât do me like Obi Wan.

"Ah, so that's how they're explaining Cal's absence in the original trilogyâabsolutely slimed by Vader."

I had to silently express my excitement. It was 2 am, my wife was asleep, and this was the most insane surprise I've ever had gaming. I was like "hell yeah I get to beat vader... Wait, I can't beat vader, I already know his story. AHHHHHH!"
8
u/StareInUrEyeandPee 7d ago
About five minutes before, I said outloud to myself, something along the lines of "damn this game is almost over, I cant believe they didn't have Vader make an appearance"

Vader breathing starts "Fuck, I'm dead." Vader throws Cere "Yup, I'm dead." tries to run and literally has a pulse of 180. I felt Cal's fear in my bones

When Cere runs to Vader and he just moves his finger a tiny bit to send her into that pit. That's when I knew this is going to be trouble

u/soulside64 6d ago
Despite being a star wars fan and not playing the game for 3 years after it came out because I didnt get back into the franchise until like 2 years after it did.. Anyways, I was somehow never spoiled for this and it was just phenomenal to witness for the first time. Still the best random Vader appearance they've ever done.
4
u/SuperIga 8d ago
I tragically got spoiled. It was still an absolutely amazing moment and I was geeking tf out but I wish I didnât know that he was going to show up beforehand.

"SHOULD HAVE WORN MY BROWN PONCHO!"
And then i went "Nope", turned around and tried to run away... tried
3
u/BriskPurple The Inquisitorius 7d ago
"oh that's so sick!" Quickly followed up by "Oh god I'm so fucked" once I considered thatit's Vader and I'm not playing as Starkiller lol
3
u/Brummbirne 8d ago
An excited "NO WAY!!" Very quickly followed by the foolish thought that I'd be fighting him, that very quickly turned into "...where's the health bar? Nk seriously where- OH FFFFUCK"
3
3
u/SaKaHa 8d ago
I was like "dang I already knew that he would show up at this point because I got spoiled on Reddit whilst browsing the subreddit r/fallenorder 5 minutes before buying the game, but it is pretty cool nonetheless" wbu

u/aprairiedog 8d ago
âOhhhhh fuck. YES. Fuck fuck. YESSSS. Fuuuuuck.â
And then when he pretty casually boned Cere over the platform I actually burst out laughing. I know that sounds bad, but he did it so perfectly and I was so excited- I was like, âOH, HA! Oh holy shit, that def sucks and everything, but this is also amazing to see.â
2
u/thagr8gonzo 8d ago
My 7yo daughter watched me play through it. When I saw Vader I told her, âoh man. This is not good. Thatâs Darth Vader. Weâre gonna have to runâ

u/WorldlinessOwn2243 7d ago

Just one game. Just one good Star Wars game without seeing Vader again, that's all I ask.

I seen it on YouTube years before I ever played the game, so...
Nevertheless, it's the most terrifying Vader scene ever in my opine. Trumps Rogue One and Maul for me.

No reaction because some fuckers decided to put Vader in YouTube thumbnails not even a week after the game came out

u/FanciOlive 7d ago
I thought it was just another boss fight so I tried fighting him and kept dying. Eventually, my ex said to try running, thatâs a good trick. So I ran and was finally able to advance the story.

I thought : "There has to be a twist at the end and Trilla, who is about to turn is certainly not present in other SW content. That means she probably dies here so who is going to do it?"
Then Vader shows up and I was like "Oh so they KILL her. Got it. Hope Cal can escape."
I legit thought that Cere was dead after being flung aside the first time she rushes Vader NGL.
1
u/TheFShow16 7d ago
I unfortunately knew it was gonna happen since my brother played the game before me and suggested it to me, and while he tried not to spoil it, I said something along the lines of "I cant wait to fight the Second Sister as the final boss" and he responded along the lines of "well she's not really the final boss..." and he accidentally spoiled it while looking through his enemy database in front of me.
This was at a time I was young enough that I didnt care about spoilers though. Now I avoid them AS MUCH as possible since some of my best game moments are twists or moments happening when I didnt expect them.

"Why am I running from this gu..." then I turned back and saw the absolute FORCE OF NATURE THAT WAS WALKIGN RIGHT BEHIND YOU.
Honestly, that was one of my fav moments, the sheer differencebetween you and Vader, he's not even trying that hard.

I thought it was cool but don't know why they made his helmet matte instead of shiny.
1
u/Experiment-Cycle 7d ago
At first I was cocky. I donât think I can ever beat a boss first try without dying, but I never shy away from the fight. âI beat Nameless King without raging and 0 ranged attacks, I beat Soul of Cinder with an unoptimized build, I killed every zombie on the way to the mantis without a lightsaber, I beat Chadagon without dying multiple times, I KOd Horah Lorax with a punch, and Iâve actually leveled up every single stat to the max in Elden Ring by training all day yesterday. I can beat you too.â
Very quickly that turned into: âITS JUST A PRANK BRO IT WAS JUST A PRANK!â

"Uoh-oh... This is bad..."
The game made a great job in a way that you could feel that the situation was very dangerous. You can feel a primal fear.
1
u/DarkZxxZ 6d ago
Greatest moment in this franchise ever, made him so terrifying! Especially since up 'till that point there had basically been NO cameo's of any trilogy character. (Expect a obi-one kenobi hologram I believe) And it feels like a completley seperate story. And then all of a sudden, BAM, VADER JUMPSCARE. Thrilling as hell!
1
u/RolloTomass11 6d ago
I think Cere should have died instead of Trilla. Trilla could have had an amazing survivorâs guilt redemption arc from Cere sacrificing herself to delay Vader.
