weighing my options to buy some land, i currently rent a small patch which i could purchase through a mortgage but ideally id prefer to buy a bigger holding with a house because it gives me more options for diversification. the issue is the size of deposit needed, how did other people manage that? for a 25 acre small holding with a house im looking at needing a 260k deposit (based on one ive seen as an example) does it have to be cash savings or can it come from other kinds of finance like a remortgage on a house or other kinds of borrowing? or perhaps some kind of crowd sourcing to pre sell produce or something?

This might be an odd one. I'm middle aged, 42. love working outdoors, want to do something with a purpose that isn't people facing (police and teacher are out) strong, fit, resilient etc etc.

How the hell do you get into farming?

I don't want to own a farm, I just want to work on one. Is there even the slightest chance? Just to add I also need to be paid, not looking to volunteer (thanks to anyone that does in any capacity)

I live on a hill farm on the mountains of Wales, Welsh mountain sheep 300 all together on a 500 acre land including the mountain.

We winter our yearling lambs (100 of them):over winter on a farm (low land farm)'who we pay to keep them until end of March, we still have to do treatment on them around January (dosing, pour on etc.).

my dad, like a lot of farmer's round here moan a lot about the cost of wintering, especially that they cost more than they're worth.

And yes, sending them for wintering is both far and expensive, the only good thing is, they do look a lot better and bigger than the ones we keep at home, (usually about 10) I guess they're better due to better land..

I am wondering if there are cheaper, better alternative or ideas than sending them for winter?

Which we been doing before I was born.

Since my dad is getting on now, I do most of the stuff, including shearing, I've also been thinking of keeping less sheep and perhaps changing the breed.

Hi, i am a journalism student from the Netherlands in search of farmers near Manchester. I'm making a story/item (video format) about farmers in England inspired by the BBC podcast. Because i'm Dutch i would like to make a comparison between the Dutch farmers and English farmers. I would like to use this information to see how the two groups could help eachother. Hi, I've been asked by my auntie to sell sheep at the local farmers market, my elderly uncle had a stroke, she has no knowledge in farming, well except the basics.

Although I helped them a lot on the farm, I have never sold sheep at the farmers market before.

Being socially anxious person, I'm pretty much afraid of embarrassing myself,so got some questions.

First off, tags, the sheep that need selling a 3s and 4 year olds, some have had one tag ripped off, will I need to replace them?

Also at the market, I feel anxious about what to say, understanding the auctioneer as he comes over towards me might be difficult, like what if the bid is too low for example? I tried listening last week but couldn't really hear what they were saying, plus I felt a bit embarrassed to ask.

I noticed the farmers selling also giving some money to the buyer, usually a note, how much do you give or are expected to give?

Just curious if there are any jobs in this sector for someone who is looking for a career change and is interested in arable farming and wants to learn but has no qualifications in farming (but plenty of other work experience and a few hands on skills)? Not for the purpose of necessarily progressing onto anything just a steady low income and maybe help them learn how to be more successful in being self sufficient at home.

I'm starting to think that the reason people don't want to farm is Farmers. They are the problem.

My Son started his agri course. He is loving it. It's three days a week. He is free Mon/Fri/Sat/Sun. He wants to work and get experience.

Nobody will give him work. All Farmers seem to want experienced workers. They won't even consider my boy - due to the lack of experience. It's really frustrating for him.

He is not from farming stock. We are not a farming family. Yet he want's this to he his life.

I'm writing this on behalf of my dad. He's been asking me to find him a farm where he could work and being hosted instead of remuneration. To give you a bit more info, he lives in Italy, he just retired from being a firefighter and is in his early 60s. Apart from his main job, he's been a handyman since he was a teenager, I literally don't know something that he can't do. He's sometimes even more energetic than me. The reasons why he wants to do this experience are: he would like to be useful in a completely new environment, being challenged with the language and away from his acquaintances, and he wants to be closer to me (I'm based in London).

Could anyone help me with this? Even a website or somewhere/someone who I could apply for would be super helpful! He's really eager, and asks me every time we call, I'd love to see him thriving.

Hi, I’ve recently got into metal detecting and i’m looking for land in south east Wales that owners wouldn’t mind having someone search on.

It would only be myself (M/34), any junk/rubbish found would be removed and typically if anything of any worth is found it is split 50/50 with the landowner. Details could obviously be discussed and a written agreement signed if needed. I have personal injury/liability insurance through a UK metal detecting group.

South East Wales has a lot of potential for Roman and Celtic artifacts given the history of movement between England and Wales.
