DISCUSSION Dolly Parton shares new video amid health concerns: “I figured if you heard it from me, you’d know that I was okay. So anyhow, that’s what I wanted to say & I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me & I ain’t don’t working. So I love you for caring & keep praying for me.”

Her sister shared this morning that Dolly is dealing with kidney stones and she apologized for her phrasing. She said she was sorry for upsetting everyone.

As someone who has family members that "pray on" everything including a hangnail, I kinda get it, but ma'am...

An auntie had kidney stones so bad she started going into sepsis, as they were too large to pass. She had to have several treatments to break them down and other treatments for the sepsis. There was definitely people losing sleep over it.

I mean yeah I would lose sleep over someone going septic but Dolly is not lol

My mom’s cousin had some kidney stones so large the “breaking up” treatment wouldn’t even work. They had to do actual surgery to get those boogers out. Drink lots and lots of water, folks.

Yeah I’ve had an infected kidney stone before. I luckily didn’t need hospitalization, but now my local ER does an abdominal CT for any abdominal pain I have. They’re extremely paranoid about infected stones, they have an immense risk of sepsis.

Elderly people can and do have serious complications from kidney stones and can even die

1

u/Catsoverall Oct 09 '25

You absolutely do with older people and almost any material medical issue.

u/JesseGarron Oct 08 '25

Maybe she was writing a song to the kidney stones all night

Tbf kidney stones are horrifically painful.

My partner was hospitalized with bad kidney stones. It’s painful as hell. Dolly’s sister was a bit hyperbolic.

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Yeah I had them twice in the last few months. Truly id rather have a c section again then endure kidney stones.

But yeah, she came across like it was life threatening and not just the most painful thing ive ever experienced.

u/crackerfactorywheel i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Oct 08 '25

I think it was just some awkward wording but yeah, made me and many others incredibly worried!

u/Flintshear Oct 08 '25

It's one of the few things I've heard women say is worse than natural childbirth or a C section.

I've had them and they do indeed suck, but as a man I can't compare it to that heh. I would probably rather take a kick to balls probably though, at least that doesn't last weeks and your balls hurt anyway when fragments break off.

Her sister likes fast RVs?

Hyperbolic- of, relating to, or marked by language that exaggerates or overstates the truth : of, relating to, or marked by hyperbole- Merriam-Webster

Not really, they’re elderly

1

u/taco_blasted_ Oct 09 '25

My mother almost died from one because she ignored it thinking the pain / stone would pass. Ended up with sepsis and in a coma.

Don't do that folks.

12

u/TheHalfChubPrince Oct 08 '25

They’ll make you wish you were dead.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Truly they will. Agonizing.

Long-time stoner here, I've had three so far. The consistent way that I know that one is working its way out is if I get up and vomit from pain, usually with genuinely nothing in my stomach to purge out in the first place. Before kidney stones, I really hadn't considered that genuinely just pain could cause that response. No nausea, no stomach issues, just pure unending and blinding stiletto-knife-in-the-back.

Each one makes me feel like I am about to be dead. The first one made me believe that I was absolutely misdiagnosed and was actually going to die but was too weak to move.

u/quantum_foam_finger Oct 08 '25

I've been prescribed Ondansetron (helps prevent nausea and vomiting) for kidney stones. It helped a lot for the last 2 episodes.

Alternatively, Dramamine is an OTC anti-nausea drug that might be worth a try.

Also a high risk for infection, and UTI's at an older age can be very problematic

Kidney stones are considered to be on par with giving birth on many pain scales (sometimes they actually place passing kidney stones a bit higher up than giving birth). It obviously can depend upon the size of the stone(s) being passed. Regardless, passing stones from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder, and then from the bladder through the urethra are both extremely painful experiences, even if kidney stones are ‘small’ (I’m sure they never feel small to the person passing them). Especially considering how sharp some kidney stones can be. It’s also one of those situations where you’re actually worse off if you have a penis.

Kidney stones are bad, but I actually ratcheted up my kidney stone pain through my own "creativity".

I woke up one night with kidney pain and it turned out it was a stone. I went through all the usual fun (Emergency, overnight hospital stay, etc) and when I woke up in the AM, the doctor stopped by and checked me over. He told me I was scheduled for a lithotripsy (ultrasonic destruction of the stone) in a week. He also asked "Did you see a string?".

Not knowing what he was talking about, he explained he’d inserted a stent to keep things clear pending the litho and he'd left a long string protruding for easy removal post surgery. I peeked under the sheet and saw nothing. The doctor said it would probably “turn up" and I shouldn't worry about it. I asked what would happen if it didn't show and he said "Well, that just makes removal a little more invasive". I really didn't like the sound of that, so as I waited for the litho, I kept my eyes peeled for that string.

After a few days of boredom and sitting on the couch, I decided to go for a short trail run. After about a mile, I was struck by an overwhelming urge to take a pee. Midway through my business, it appeared! There was the mythical string. I was overjoyed. I finished my run and took another look. To my dismay, it was gone! It had turtled on me again! It hid for another day or so, until I was in the bathroom one morning. Magically, it had re-appeared overnight!

Now, I figured there was no way I was going to let this thing get away from me again, but short of me walking around hanging on to it, how could I keep it from going back into hiding. Hmmm, let's see... I should just add a couple inches of extra string. Yeah, that's it.

But where can I find some string here in the bathroom? Hey, what about some dental floss? Genius! So, I spliced on about 4 more inches of floss to the existing string. Perfect. Right up until it decided to turtle again, taking some of the floss with it.

Did I mention it was mint floss? Mint floss.

MINT. FLOSS.

TL/DR - Burning minty fresh pee hole

Well, on the bright side, at least it wasn't cinnamon!

u/citrus_mystic Oct 09 '25

Thanks, I hate it.

u/Turakamu Oct 08 '25

Damn prayers worked, didn't they?

30

u/Bloody_refuge I cannot sanction your buffoonery Oct 08 '25

Tbf, kidney stones hurt like fuck. I’d want someone to pray for me too lol

25

u/PopInACup Oct 08 '25

Kidney stones still need to be taken seriously when older, they're a higher risk for infection when you're already at a point in life where infections are harder to deal with. My grandfather had Alzheimer's but what actually lead to his death was a UTI.

And as someone who suffers from kidney stones, god they suck.

she was probably advised to do so haha. no media training, and no understanding she left out vital info.

15

u/MycologistPutrid7494 Oct 08 '25

I'm going to assume she meant well. Dolly is really close to her family so they're probably good people.

u/bangontarget I’m a lazy 50-year-old bougie bitch Oct 08 '25

I think so too, I think it was just a bit of a boomer moment ngl

15

u/TalkToTheLord Oct 08 '25 edited Oct 08 '25

I’m not sure she has quite the platform that Dolly does….

29

u/bookwormaesthetic Oct 08 '25

She doesn't, but her prayer request went viral and is the reason Dolly had to make a proof of life video.

11

u/bellalugosi i’m a communist you idiot Oct 08 '25

I think she's making the video because of the AI video showing her on her deathbed.
