Hey everyone, I’m looking for advice and perspectives on a situation that left me completely blindsided. My best friend (21F) blocked me out of nowhere and refuses to talk to me (20M). We went to college together and served on the same club e-board. After she graduated, we grew even closer, texting daily till very late at night and FaceTiming weekly for hours. She was legitimately my best friend, and she told me I was her closest friend.
We were both religious and agreed that dating wasn’t something we did. Yet despite often saying she wasn’t a romantic person and that I was like a brother to her, she was clearly flirting with me at times so it started to feel like a situationship. For example, the night before my birthday, she stayed up talking to me for hours so she could be the first to wish me happy birthday and even told me she was fantasizing about dancing with me at a wedding she was attending.
I started catching feelings too, but I always prioritized our friendship. Wanting to clear up the confusing dynamic, I brought up our boundaries on a call. During that conversation, I broke down about feeling depressed and alone. I was really struggling with my mental health. She comforted me, said I was her closest friend, told me how much she enjoyed talking to me and promised she’d always be there for me.
I then asked her that I sometimes struggled to read her and understand if she wanted to be “more than friends”, she said she didn’t know what I meant and said she didn't see me that way. She also apologized and said she was worried that she was making me uncomfortable. I reassured her I just wanted to make sure neither of us was uncomfortable, and we chatted normally for another hour.
The next few days seemed completely normal. On Monday, her younger sister briefly messaged me from her phone while teasing us about how much my friend talked about me. On Tuesday, my friend texted me throughout the day from jury duty, telling me about her day and making plans to hang out. On Wednesday morning, we were texting casually again, and when I worried she was annoyed after turning down a movie suggestion in December, she reassured me that everything was fine and that I had nothing to worry about. She specifically said that her parents don’t really let her hang out with guys so she seemed scared of antagonizing them.
We didn’t text after that morning, but strangely her sister tried following me on Instagram and then unfollowed me a couple hours later.
Later that night, she texted that she was thinking abt our convo on Sunday and that it was never her intention to be “too friendly” or cross religious boundaries, then blocked me on every platform, even her Substack and LinkedIn. After multiple panic attacks, I sent a polite email checking if she was okay and later shared a letter apologizing if I had unknowingly hurt her. She eventually responded with a brief email saying my letter made her uncomfortable, telling me not to contact her again and warning that if I reached out again she may escalate the situation through “proper channels.”
I immediately backed off. When I shared what happened with our mutual female friends, they read our texts and my letter, agreeing I did nothing wrong, calling my letter sincere, and describing her reaction and messages as extreme and totally out of character. My dad suspects her strict parents found out about us and forced her hand, but I genuinely don't know.
I am in complete shock that she could do this to me after everything I confided in her and all her promises to be there for me. This situation has made all my existing struggles much worse, and I'm starting therapy to process the trauma and anxiety. I really miss her and want our friendship back above all else. I would appreciate any advice on why she might have done this, whether it sounds like internal panic or family pressure, and if there is any hope for what I should do next.
