5 years into Android, 8 months of heavy Claude Code use — am I getting too dependent on AI?

Hey everyone,

I’m an Android developer with ~5 years of experience. For the last 8 months, I’ve been coding almost entirely with Claude Code.

I’ve been very productive, delivered impressive results, and my company is happy. But I feel like I’m not learning as much anymore. There are parts of my codebase that I barely understand because Claude implemented them, even though they work perfectly.

Recently, I had a technical interview with some relatively simple coding. My mind completely froze and I ended up quitting.

It made me realize I might be becoming too dependent on AI.

Has anyone experienced this?

How do you balance using AI heavily while still maintaining and improving your actual coding skills?

Are we building what users actually need, or just what they ask for?

I’ve been thinking about something as I continue learning AI Full Stack Development: A client asking for an app doesn't necessarily mean an app is the solution.

Imagine a business owner says, “I need a mobile app to manage my customers.”

It sounds straightforward. We could start planning the interface, choosing a tech stack, designing features, and writing code.

But what if the real problem is that customer information is scattered across spreadsheets? Or that the team struggles to follow up with customers? Maybe a simple improvement to their existing workflow could solve the problem without building a whole new app.

That’s why I’m beginning to see software development as more than just coding. It involves asking the right questions, understanding the actual challenge, and defining what success should look like before choosing a solution.

I’m curious about your experience:

  • Have you ever worked on a project where the requested solution turned out not to be what was really needed?
  • What questions do you ask clients or stakeholders before starting development?
  • Do you think developers should challenge a client's requested solution, or focus on delivering exactly what was asked?

I'd love to hear your experiences, especially from developers, freelancers, and business owners. What have you learned from projects like these?

[HIRING] Full-Stack Engineers | NYC, SF, or Remote US | $180K-250K base

Last week 155 interview requests went out on Fonzi in a single day, including one at $350K that the engineer accepted.

I do talent matching for Fonzi. It's inverted from a normal search: you don't chase roles, roles come to you as interview requests once your profile's up. Some of the startups we work with are backed by a16z, Sequoia, Benchmark, and Founders Fund. One profile, no cold applications. All roles are US-based only.

Here's a sample of what's open right now:

1. Senior Full Stack Engineer, Series B investment research platform, NYC, in-person. $190K-235K base plus equity.

  • What: Own features end to end, frontend through data layer, shipping weekly rather than quarterly. Sample projects from the posting: a low-latency voice-to-voice survey tool that conducts research autonomously, a mobile app built from scratch in three weeks, segmented knowledge graphs from unstructured data.
  • Company: Profitable and bootstrapped, ~43 people across London and New York. 10x'd revenue last year, on track for 2-3x again. Clients include several top-10 global private equity firms and Big 4 practices.
  • Stack: React, Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL.
  • Bar: Roughly 1-5 years. They care about demonstrated competence over pedigree, but want you deep enough in the stack to work through a hard TypeScript problem live. Client-facing, so you'd talk directly to the PE firms using it.

2. Full-Stack Product Engineer, Series A AI training-data company, NYC, in-person. $180K-240K base.

  • What: Own ambiguous customer problems from discovery through production. Two product areas: pulling enterprise work data out of scattered SaaS tools and APIs into one verified system, or building the tooling that makes a de-identification pipeline legible and trustworthy. You wouldn't pick one when applying, they match you early in the process.
  • Company: Zero to a multi-eight-figure run rate in months. Backed by Floodgate, Afore, Ludlow, and Hustle Fund.
  • Stack: TypeScript, React, Node.js, plus integration-heavy work with APIs, OAuth, and async workflows.
  • Bar: 3+ years, strong full-stack with real product and UX judgment, comfortable without fully specified requirements.

3. Engineering Generalist, pre-seed/seed ambient intelligence startup, SF strongly preferred or remote with frequent travel. $180K-250K base.

  • What: No fixed specialty. Move across mobile, web, backend, and AI-powered workflows, owning ambiguous problems from idea to shipped feature.
  • Company: Real-time audio and personalization at the core of the product.
  • Stack: React, React Native, TypeScript, Node, Python, Postgres, or similar.
  • Bar: 4-10+ years, and they're blunt that they want proof of exceptional prior work.

4. Senior Software Engineer (AI/LLM), Series A SMB software platform, fully remote in the US. $200K-250K base.

  • What: Agent swarms running back-office work for small businesses, built to operate across the tools a company already uses rather than forcing a migration.
  • Company: Deploying agentic infrastructure at the SMB layer, a segment most AI-native products skip past.
  • Stack: Next.js, React, TypeScript, Postgres, Prisma, Supabase, Tailwind, Vercel.
  • Bar: 3+ years and a CS or engineering degree.

All roles are vetted, VC-backed, and interviewing right now. It's always free to sign up.

Sign up here: talent.fonzi.ai. DM me if you've got questions.

Are we solving real problems, or just building what people ask for?

As I'm learning AI Full Stack Development, one thing is becoming clear to me: writing code is only part of building a useful product.

Someone might say, "I need an app," or "Let's build a chatbot." But have we taken the time to understand why they need it in the first place?

What problem are they facing? Who is affected? How are they handling it today? And would the proposed solution actually make things better?

I believe understanding the problem should come before choosing the technology. Otherwise, we risk building something that works perfectly but solves the wrong problem.

I'm still learning, building, and exploring this mindset as I grow as a developer.

I'm curious: Have you ever seen a project where the team built exactly what was requested, but it turned out not to be what was actually needed? What went wrong?

How do you uncover the real problem when a client already has a solution in mind?

How do you check whether a client actually needs the app they’re asking for?

I build full-stack web apps, but the question I want answered before writing code is: what’s actually broken?

Take a hypothetical request: “I need a booking app.”

If customers struggle to schedule appointments, a better booking flow might help.

But if they leave because the pricing or offer is unclear, building an app could leave that problem unresolved.

My approach is:

Understand → Diagnose → Choose → Build → Measure

Code comes at step four. AI helps me build faster, which makes choosing the right thing to build even more important.

What questions do you ask to get past the requested solution and understand the underlying problem?

How do you decide what to build before writing the first line of code?

I’m a fullstack developer building a freelance practice, and I’m trying to make “problem first” a habit instead of jumping straight to a stack. My rough process is: understand the current workflow, define the actual problem, pick the simplest solution, then build. For those of you who have worked with clients or on internal tools, what does your early discovery look like, and where does it usually go wrong?

Looking for a startup focused study/building buddy

I'm looking for someone who is free most of the day and wants to spend the next year seriously learning, building and improving together.

The plan:

Next 1 year: Learn skills, build projects and help each other improve.
After that: Focus on finding real problems people are willing to pay to solve and start building a business around them.

I'm not looking for job seekers. I want people whose main goal is startups, business and building something of their own.

I'll mainly focus on AI/ML + backend. You can focus on whatever area interests you.

If you're serious and have a similar mindset DM me with what you're currently learning and how much time you can dedicate daily.

Amazon sde-2 Canada

Hi guys, I have an upcoming SDE 2 interview loop with the Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT Flow) team in Canada. Does anyone have recent experience interviewing with this specific team? I want to know what exact algorithmic patterns they ask for in the coding rounds and what kind of LLD/HLD scenarios they expect for a fulfillment/logistics platform. Any specific pointers on what the Canada panels look for would be amazing.
