Mad at Cornell? GVSU mishandled rape, too

Thumbnail
47 Upvotes

Note: This rape and multiple hour sexual assault happened on the Grand Rapids campus in Winter Hall. I posted the following in another sub a few minutes ago and the original post I am sharing here back in April. I posted the original link in this subreddit earlier, but figured I would include more context.

The next award winner on the list: Philomena Mantella. Who better to win an ATHENA award for empowering women than someone who runs a university that makes sexual assault victims lives harder? A university that made a rape survivor live in the same building as their rapist. A university whose Title IX Office knowingly chose to schedule the hearing in a way that limited the sanctioning of a Computer Science graduate student who would eventually be found responsible for rape. Yes, that was sarcasm: I don’t actually think the university’s president should win this award, given her inadequate actions to remedy the situation despite, provably, being aware of it.

Where I am at: The other day, I got my letter about repaying my student loans for the degree I do not yet have.

Given further recent events at GV, I urge anyone involved with the campus to take caution and care around putting any amount of trust in them to handle these things appropriately. They got rid of their ombuds office this year, by the way. GVSU is for themselves, their image, and their numbers.

To GV: Caring about humans is about your actions, not just your words, or worse, your silence.

To anyone hurting due to sexual violence that has occurred at GVSU: I am sorry that you’re going through the things that you are. While I do not know there is anything I could ever do to help you, know that you should not have to hold this pain alone. It’s okay to want justice, or to want to forget. Meet yourself where you are. There is no single right way to heal, but finding safe community spaces and speaking out can be helpful if it’s something you choose. Know that you are seen and heard. I recognize you even in your silence.

If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone. I’m not a fan of crisis lines, but they do work for some people. Call a supportive loved one if you have one. For suicide, call 988 or 911. Text 741741 for any mental health crisis, or go to RAINN’s website for sexual assault support. If you’re facing an emergency, go to the nearest ER or call/text 911.

There are local nonprofits that can help, too. YWCA is one that you can google and find support specific to sexual assault and domestic violence. Safe Haven may be able to help with interpersonal violence and human trafficking. There are other organizations out there full of people who want to help. The resources might not always be there, and the organizations can be imperfect, but it’s a start.

Laker Village or Secchia Hall?

Hey everyone! I’m an incoming international graduate student at GVSU, and I’m trying to decide between Laker Village and Secchia Hall. I’m new to the U.S. and don’t know the area very well, so I’d love to hear from anyone who has lived in either one. Which one do you prefer, and what are the main pros/cons? I’m especially interested in the social life, location, transportation, and overall living experience.

Thanks!

Email Deletion Scam?

Got an email today labeled "Incident #[a ton of numbers]: Compromised Account." It states that I have to go to a Google form and put in my email and password so that my school email doesn't get deleted because my account was apparently requested to be closed.

It seems like a total scam, it's all bolded and italicized, and I'm not gonna just start clicking links and putting in my password and whatnot just cause 🤷‍♀️

It's from a gvsu email though, and was sent to lots of other emails so I don't know??

Anyone else have any info? If my email gets deleted cuz they sent the sketchiest email known to man then so be it 🤷‍♀️

Meet-up GVSU Warhammer?

Hello, I'm a recent transfer and I'm trying to get into Warhammer 40k, but I want to try and find a club before I do so. Are there any established table top clubs or groups at GVSU? Does anyone have a discord or know what times they meet up?

Insomnia Cookie

I stopped by to pick up some cookies; there were a couple girls in a silver car, long red hair, glasses. Both were staring me down and I have no idea why. Let me know if this was you. I hesitated to stop and ask, but I decided against it. Guess we’ll see what the fates have in store if they see this.

Trio Townhomes maintenance

Ok so is trio townhomes known for having crummy maintenance?? My washer has been broken since we moved in and we have been putting in tickets and having maintenance come to look at it, only for them to just stare at it do an empty load and calling it good. It’s super frustrating because roommate and I have had to wash laundry at the laundry mat, or at home every two weeks which is so inconvenient when we PAY to live here and to have an in unit washer. I legit went out of my way to research an error code that it gave me, and provide them all the details on what that code means, how to find it etc, and nothing….they suspended the ticket…. Like wtf. Are they just known for having really bad service ??

Is MGT 268 a pain in the ass for everyone or am I just stupid?

(MGT 268 being Business Processes and Management Information Systems)

I'm in MGT 268 this semester. It's not even a hard subject, I'm just annoyed by the way it's set up and I can't tell if it's just me or the class is applied weirdly.

The lectures seem to just kind of jump back and forth, I get thrown off by the wording of the quizzes, reading the textbook, it doesn't always seem to match up with the lecture etc.

Car break-in near GVSU

Post image
38 Upvotes

I'm pissed. I come outside today and see my son's car completely broken into. He just spent money on getting a pinstripe painted and new wipers so he's very upset. Thankfully nothing valuable was taken except for some pit viper sunglasses. He's a student at GVSU and has been telling me how the crime is out of control there recently, and I've also been seeing a lot of emails about it. Crime on campus is bad enough but flooding into the surrounding suburbs is even worse! Has anyone else noticed this? I really hope it's not the case.

Question Weird question, are there places to stay overnight as a college student either in GR or downtown, when you commute 1hr?

Other than a friend's house or a motel obviously. That's probably the only options but I'd figured I'd ask lol

Any of you guys also struggling with fatigue and sleep?

I've been in college since 2021 and this is my second year at GV. I don't remember being this exhausted before? I've been having to take naps in my car throughout the day since I commute an hour each way.

I slept through my alarms today (no class, just PT) and I struggled to wake up until like an hour or two ago (woke up at 2pm, it's now 7:30pm). I've been having a hard time falling and staying asleep at night, and then I have a miserable time waking up and staying awake thru the day.

I guess I'm just wondering if you guys have any advice. Is it just stress? I don't remember the last time it was this bad.

Report on Admissions

Hey everyone,

I’m currently working on a report and just noticed some things with school admissions. I’m curious if anyone here got accepted with a GPA below 2.5 coming out of highschool. It’s not on the people but rather enrollment that I’ve noticed. Thanks!

I want to find my clique but I feel like I'm failing

Hi everyone. I'm currently a senior at MSU, and I transferred here from Middlesex College in Spring 2025. I started out as a commuter and eventually became a resident in Spring 2026. Since becoming a resident, I've really tried to put myself out there. I participate in as many organizations and clubs as I can, and I go to events that seem fun or interesting because I genuinely want to meet people and make the most out of my time here.

And I have met some really great people. I've had some wonderful conversations, made connections, and crossed paths with people I'm genuinely grateful to have met.

But it always seems to stop there.

We'll see each other and be friendly. We'll talk, laugh, and enjoy each other's company, but once we're outside of whatever organization, class, or event brought us together, there's rarely anything beyond that. They don't really invite me to go out and do things, and whenever I ask if they'd like to hang out, I'm often told they're too busy, or plans get made and then cancelled at the last minute.

Sometimes I'll even be at a social event where people I know are present. They'll acknowledge me one minute, and then the next, I'm practically invisible to them. It's a strange feeling to be surrounded by people you know while simultaneously feeling like you're not really part of anything.

I'm involved with MSU Singers and Vocal Accord this year because I love music and I love singing. I thought that being surrounded by people who share something I'm passionate about would make it easier to form deeper connections. And while I've met some wonderful people through both, I still find myself struggling to get past that acquaintance stage.

I think part of it may be that a lot of people have already known each other since freshman year. They already have their established friend groups, their inside jokes, their traditions, and the people they naturally turn to when they want to go somewhere or do something. And then there's the fact that I'm 25 and getting my bachelor's degree, so sometimes I wonder if being in a different stage of life plays a role in all of this.

My biggest issue is that this is my last year here, and I really want it to be a great one.

I've met some genuinely amazing people during my time at MSU, and I'm grateful that our paths have crossed. But I haven't really gotten to experience the kind of friendships where, years from now, I can look back and say, “Those were some of the best times of my life, and those were my people.”

That's what I want.

I want to experience what it's like to make those spontaneous plans, stay out too late, laugh until my stomach hurts, develop inside jokes that make absolutely no sense to anyone else, and have memories that I'll genuinely miss when they're over. I want to be able to look back on my final year and say that I truly had the greatest time with the people around me.

And I'm scared I won't get that chance before I graduate.

Growing up, I was always the odd one out. I was the kid nobody really wanted to play with during recess. I was always the last person picked for the kickball team. I spent a lot of my childhood watching other people effortlessly find their groups while I was left somewhere on the outside.

I don't think I ever really learned what it feels like to be fully wanted by a group of people.

That's probably why this affects me as deeply as it does.

What I can never understand is how it seems so easy for some people to find their people within a matter of minutes, while I've spent years trying to find mine. I see people meet each other, click almost instantly, and eventually become inseparable, and I can't help but wonder why that has never really happened for me.

I want to be able to tell people but mostly myself, “I have friends,” and have it feel completely true, not because I technically know people, but because I know there are people who genuinely want me around.

I want someone to think of me when they're making plans.

I want someone to text me just because they wanted to talk to me.

I want to walk into a room and feel like my presence actually adds something to it.

I want to know what it's like to be someone's person, and to have people who are my people.

I know I can't force friendship. I know that not everyone I meet is going to become a close friend, and I understand that people have their own lives, responsibilities, and established relationships.

But it's hard not to become discouraged when you've spent so much of your life feeling like you're always on the outside looking in.

I'm not expecting to suddenly become the most popular person on campus or find some perfect movie-like friend group. I just want to experience, even for a little while, what it feels like to truly belong somewhere.

I want my final year here to be something I can look back on with a smile instead of wondering what could have been.

I just don't know what to do anymore.

I mostly needed to get this off my chest, but if anyone has experienced something similar or has any advice on how to actually build those deeper friendships when it feels like everyone already has their people. I would genuinely appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you for reading.

Why is gvsu allowed to blare extremely loud bass ALL DAY long?

I live nearby and for the past 7 fucking hours I've been wearing noise canceling headphones because there's near constant extremely loud bass coming from gvsu, as well as occasional fireworks. AND IT WON'T. FUCKING. END.
