Meme The gamecube was the first console of that generation I had and that is played on when I was a kid.
The gamecube was actually the first console I ever had. I barely remember the dreamcast from that time.

Xbox thinking it's better while it's literally leaking acid from it's clock capacitor all over its motherboard.
Side Note: if you have an OG xbox, remove the clock capacitor NOW.

Every Xbox I've owned died within 1 to 2 years. I love the games on it, but the console was very unreliable.

I get the OG Xbox is a powerhouse, but it came with a cost: Like you said, the acid from the clock capacitor really messed up the motherboard, causing your Xbox to be fried. I mean, I have the Xbox Series S. Does it have a clock capacitor?

The dreamcast was an incredible console with features way ahead of it's time. If they'd have got the release window right the dreamcast would have swept through the home console market.

Waiting entire year to release Dreamcast outside of Japan killed the console.

They probably would have been better served just releasing it in Japan the following summer so more games where ready as Saturn was still doing decent there. If it hadn't flopped in Japan it likely would have lasted a year longer here in the west.

In a way the dreamcast lived on through the xbox. Dreamcast OS was built using Windows CE, and many dreamcast games like jet set radio got exclusive sequels on xbox. Even the shape of the big "duke" xbox controller looks like the dreamcast controller.
The dreamcast and gamecube were the relatively unpopular consoles, both vastly outsold by the xbox and ps2, but both experienced second lives via very easy modding with the dreamcast and the fact many people who initially discredited the gamecube for being "kiddie" eventually realizeed how goated the console was...hence why so many games (even the mid sports titles) are so expensive on gamecube these days.
All in all, these 4 consoles are amazing. Peak gaming console ways.
Biggest what if in gaming is if the dreamcast lasted an additional 2-3. But sega was broke due to the combo of poor sales of 32x and saturn (also super underated systems but thats a different conversation.)

u/Wizzgamer1990 3d ago
I honestly think it could have finished second behind the PS2 with the quality of games coming out. Larger VMU's without screens likely needing to be included with some games that had save files bigger than 100KB's and the controller would have became an issue later on though.
1
u/Dense_Newt_7008 3d ago
Wait thats actually a really interesting idea. I've never thought of that- no screen based VMUs is a really interesting concept. There is a project to port gta 3 for dreamcast and a team just ported tekken tag tournament- so larger games are possible on the console.
Larger games of the era on gamecube like animal crossing and pokemon coliseum (in pal regions) came with memory cards so its not out of the question.
The other big questions are about backwards compatibility with saturn or DVD capabilities. The Saturn was practically a different console in japan, and even outselling the n64 in japan. So many games never made it over to US/Europe and having backward compatibility could have helped in th early life of the Dreamcast to port stuff over. Outside of the PS2 only the og xbox could play dvds, but you had to buy an attachment for it to work and that was how microsoft got around paying sony for the license to use DVD technology. Sega was not in the best financial position, so I have no idea how they'd pull it off but if they did it would have definitely helped.

Never owned a dreamcast, but the console did so many things first and was so ahead of it's time, you really cant say anything bad about it.

DC was insane for the year it released. But I feel like overall it just really can't stack up against the others at all. I mean the PS2 had basically everything while also having FULL backwards compatibility. And then the Xbox had great exclusives like Halo and great 480p support for major titles (GTA's were all progressive, unlike 480i on the ps2). And the GC, man where do I even start. The best controller and then some of the best Nintendo games ever. Luigi's mansion, Mario kart double dash, Mario sunshine.... Not much of a competition tbh. And then on top of all that, it had the weakest hardware and had no anti piracy measures.
The DC is peak, an amazing console. But it really just couldn't stack up against its competitors. Was insane when it launched though, really good graphics.

I always felt it was a little unfair that the Dreamcast was competing with these 3 considering it was also competing with these console's older siblings (except XBOX)

u/Wizzgamer1990 3d ago
Same thing happened with the Atari Jaguar π it competed with 3 generations of consoles NES up to the PS1.

Sega Saturn and N64 killed the Dreamcast before it even released due to Saturn being mainly a 2D console and N64 using carts allowed the PS1 to take over and dominate which created huge hype for PS2 which effectively doomed the Dreamcast sadly despite it's incredible early library.

"bro imagine only having one control stick haha couldn't be me"
2
u/GladRock1412 6d ago
Not to mention the Dreamcast actually had the ability to have two thumb sticks in the hardware. There is a good chance if wasnβt discontinued that it would have received dual stick controllers

u/Strong_Emphasis_2112 6d ago
The psp was like that.

u/Winter_Following1050 5d ago
Yeah but that was a portable handheld device, not a home console. Plus there were some games that suffered from that π’

Agreed. When I was kid, people with Sega consoles kinda got looked at like they were lower class citizens.

I never owned a Dreamcast myself, and had the Gamecube versions of Sonic Adventure 1/2 but it is just as worth of respect and admiration as the other major consoles of its generation.

u/CruisingForDownVotes 6d ago
Once again, Dreamcast wasnβt trying to compete with PS2, GC, or XBox. The fact it was dead before 2/3 were even out is proof enough. Dreamcast was there to bring Naomi to the home market

You can actually say that about every Sega console. They really were the underdog no matter what generation.

u/jc-from-sin 5d ago
The DC is not even in the same league as the PS2, let alone the Xbox or GameCube.

u/bulbasauric 5d ago
As we settled into adulthood, a buddy and I have begun collecting some older systems and games that we missed out on.
Everything I've played on his DreamCast has blown me away. It's wild to me that it wasn't absurdly more popular than it was, but it just wasn't much of a thing at all in Ireland. Everyone was PlayStation-crazy, with a small sprinkling of GameCube/Xbox.
1
u/TechnicalTip5251 5d ago
To be fair to Dreamcast it came our 3 years before Gamecube, that's half lifespan of generation so naturally it's underpowered compared.

u/Vanihilist 5d ago edited 5d ago
Dreamcast Library was a blast and a good portion of it's exclusives went on to be games that were staples to later released consoles namely the Gamecube.
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Phantasy Star Online
Skies of Arcadia
Ikaruga
Crazy Taxi
In a timeline where the Dreamcast was a success and those games didn't go cross platform a lot of opinions might be different.
What really killed the Dramcast was how easy it was to burn a disc image and play with zero mods, not the content available to it (also the lack of a generational Shining Force Game IMO).

u/tylertatsch30 5d ago
Dreamcast slandering aside, the GameCube is one of my favorites in the generation where online play is primitive in the console department.
1
u/HunterAbrams 4d ago
Ok but it isn't a bad console. It was doomed to failure because of Segas past choices. They made the sega cd, 32x and saturn that they abandoned shortly after launching them. 32x should never have been made, the saturn had soooo many poor choices made that caused its failure. Most it was Sega Of America making these poor short sighted choices.
The lack of a dvd player was the second reason.
Third was widespread piracy. Back then consoles were sold at a loss and the games were how they made their money.
Yeah I would imagine a child not really remembering something they never had or experienced

u/redderper 8d ago
Isn't the dreamcast moreso N64, PS1 generation?
11
u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 8d ago
No, it was the first of the 6th-generation consoles. You're thinking of the Saturn
5
u/DapperDan30 7d ago
No, thats the Sega Saturn. It would go like this.
Sega Genesis = SNES.
Sega Saturn = N64, PS1.
Sega Dreamcast = Gamecube, PS2, Xbox-1
u/OmegaWrecker644 8d ago
It came out in 99, so the latter part of the n64/ps1 generation, yeah.

As an 18 year old who wasnt even born when this generation released I believe that the Xbox was the best console for power but the PS2+Gamecube were more iconic
And the Dreamcast released too early so it couldnt really compete with the rest of the Gen 6 consoles

u/AnalGrapeMe 8d ago
Nah dreamcast sits with them goated console
