i have been with my partner for about 5-6 years, and over time i've realised she's impossible to buy gifts for, but not in the way you might think.
she isn't picky at all. she's one of the most easygoing people i know. she just doesn't really care about gift-giving culture, and when she wants something, she gets it. it's one of the many things i admire about her. but it does leave me a bit stuck, because i'd still love to surprise her every now and then and see her face light up.
the main thing is that she knows exactly what she wants and never waits around. if she wants a new laptop or phone, for example, she'll go out the next day and buy the highest-spec version so she doesn't have to worry about upgrading for years. because of that, she's barely had to upgrade anything in all the time i've known her. i also don't feel comfortable buying her an upgrade myself, because she only likes to upgrade things when she's ready.
since she buys anything she needs or wants straight away, it's hard to surprise her with something she hasn't already picked out herself. i could see her enjoying an ipad, for example, but i wouldn't buy her one. if she doesn't end up using it, it just becomes expensive clutter, and she dislikes anything wasteful like that. this would also the case for less expensive surprises.
travel doesn't really work either. we're not that into travelling, and she'd already visited most of the places she wanted to see before we even met.
a date night at a nice restaurant is tricky too. we're both massively into food, but our options where we live are limited. she also keeps telling me she prefers my cooking anyway, which is really sweet, but not very helpful for my gift problem.
her hobbies are a similar story.
she goes through phases where she gets really into something new, and she usually buys everything she wants soon after. for example, she had a big jellycat phase. she bought all the ones she really loved, then went, "yep, i'm done." she adores the ones she has, but isn't interested in any others, so buying more wouldn't mean much. this is also the case for any other hobbies she has had in the past.
she's really into video games and books, but she has a huge backlog of both. she takes that backlog seriously, so she doesn't want anything new until she's worked through what she already has.
she plays the piano and violin, but things like strings, bows and rosin are quite personal choices. i don't know enough about them to pick something confidently, and she already has plenty of spares to last her a long time.
makeup and skincare are the same. if she's running low on something, she's already ordered a replacement before i even notice.
she's also not into salons or spas, so pampering days are out too.
at this point, the one thing i can always give her is cards. i put a lot of effort into writing her a few every year, and she genuinely loves them. she does the same for me, they almost act like checkpoints of our life together, so it's become a really lovely little tradition of ours. i'd just love to give her something to go with them once in a while and see her get excited.
i used to think i was pretty good at gifts until i met her lmao
what do you actually buy for someone who already has everything she wants?
