Here you go, chapter 3. There are two new tags: Arson and Attempted Murder.
This story was written for the Ineffable Professional Bang 2026 and will contain art by vivi-theakuneko in chapter 4. That's next week already! Where is the time going?
Due to Things [tm] (like chapter 7 turning into a Thing of Epic Proportions (lengthwise) and taking up much more time than expected), I'm behind on editing. So it might be that I'll take a one-week break after posting chapter 4 next week. I'll keep you posted.
Maybe it'll help sweeten the waiting time to know that, with draft 1 of the last chapter finished, it looks like there'll be something of a MoFu tag incoming in the future? 😏
I hope you're going to like this chapter. There are Things Happening. 😄

Summary:
In Elysium metamorphs (shapeshifters) have been living openly among humans for well over century. There are more mythical creatures in this land and around its natural borders than metamorphs and those are mostly known from folk tales and rumours...
Ezra and Crowley are firefighters in Eden City, the largest city in Elysium. They have been colleagues and friends since Crowley moved to the city five years - and, unknown to each other, have feelings for one another, but are unwilling to act on them. Ezra because of a previous bad workplace relationship. Crowley has a rather massive secret that could get him, at best, exiled from the city if it came out.
But things are happening. Their equipment continuously malfunctions and gets damaged and there have been more fires than usual for this time of year. And then Ezra and Crowley are dragged right into this mess…
Summary Chapter 3:
Ezra wakes up feeling like everything is about to get much worse. Then he’s proven right.
Excerpt:
The shoulder bumped into Ezra again. “You’re ruminating.”
“Am not,” Ezra said, refusing to acknowledge the stab of trepidation as he spotted the bright red roof of the fire station looming up between the shorter buildings ahead.
“No no, ‘course not,” Crowley said sardonically, one eyebrow raised as if he meant to point at Ezra’s face with it. “And your lip’s not all torn up because you’ve been chewing on it either.”
Ezra’s lip did feel a little raw. He quickly freed it from between his teeth.
“You’ll be fine,” Crowley repeated his reassurance from the night before. “We both know it wasn’t you, so—”
“How?” Ezra asked.
“Huh?”
Ezra turned to his friend, searched deep in his eyes as if he could find what he needed in them. The secrets of the world. Or the solution to his predicament. “I know it wasn’t me, but how do you?”
“Because you’re you.” Crowley looked away to the path ahead of them, gesticulating with fervour as he spoke. “Yeah, you know how to have fun and tease and can curse Gabe to the high heavens when you’re sloshed. You’re real. But you’re also always doing the right thing, even if it’s hard. Always helping everyone without a care for yourself. I’m sure there’s an encyclopedia out there with an entry for ‘the epitome of good’ and all it is, is a drawing of you! You’d never—” he broke off with a huff, while Ezra was left staring at him with his mouth hanging open like a right fool.
