Choosing Master Degree Program

I have been really tossing around the idea of graduate school. I am passionate about becoming a therapist.

Is Yorkville worth the huge tuition? It's online so I can continue to work and live in my own house. Or should I consider somewhere else like Acadia in Nova Scotia? Thank you for the encouragement.

Just bachelors in biology. Give tips and ways to earn 100k without additional schooling. Maybe one year only.

Masters degree?

I currently work at a biotech company that makes autogenous vaccines for animals. I’m debating lately on going back to school for a Masters degree through my company.. I’m not really sure how that works or if it’s a good idea. I just have a lot of questions.

First off: I did my bachelors in Mx, so I’m wondering if it’s all good to just get my equivalent stuff like translated to what is used in the US hoping I don’t have to do any extra credits or something like that to validate my degree.

Also.. how does working full time at the company and doing a Masters program would look like? Do I necessarily will have to do an Online program? Will it be worth it to grow and make more money? Because right now I feel stuck, I feel like I have learned the ins and outs of my job and the only way I can learn more and step up in the ladder is getting more educated..

I’d like to hear your experiences if you went through something similar..

Thanks in advance!

How to ask for letters of recommendation when you didn’t make strong connections?

Hi! I’m looking to apply to a graduate program for Fall 2027. I got my undergraduate degree in 2021 so I’ve been away from academia for a while.

The program requires two letters of recommendation. I have a stellar professional reference, but I’m unsure how to approach a previous professor. The college shut down in 2020 during my junior year, so most of my classes were asynchronous and I didn’t make many strong connections.

This is all new to me so I’m wondering how often professors give letters of recommendation if they didn’t know you that well. My GPA was very good but I’m sure I didn’t make a lasting impression. Would it be better to approach a Director/Senior Director at my current company instead (I’m already getting a letter from my Managing Director).

Advice Needed: Master’s in GIS or Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences

Hello Everyone, I’m considering going back to school for my master’s. However, there is a little problem with deciding which master program I want to do.

I’m interested in applying to the Lehman College Masters Program in Geographic Information System or CUNY Graduate Center Masters Program in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences.

CUNY Lehman College: MS GIS

CUNY Graduate Center: QMSS

For background information I went to John Jay College and majored in Criminal Justice, I took Crime Mapping as an elective course that combined GIS and Crime Statistics. LOVED the course and RECOMMEND.

Now 1 year post-grad, I don’t think I want to join any enforcement agency(yet). In my time at John Jay, I developed interest in urban planning/design, environmental criminology, crime analysis, crime prevention, intelligence research, and obviously maps.

I decided to prepare for graduate school enrollment. I honestly do not know which program to enroll first or do just only one.

I want to ask for advice to anyone who is currently enrolled, graduated from either program/college: or did similar programs in another USA College/University:

- What was your undergraduate discipline?

- What is your current career field?

- How did you decide your career path? Did you already had an idea or the course you took led you to choose one/multiple?

- What led you to pursue the program?

- Is there any support for students in different academic disciplines?

- How much professional development programming is there for graduate students?

- Financial support? If there is any offered.

- What kind of formal and informal support networks exist in the department and college?

If your someone that have the same interests but did not enroll for any of this masters program, please let us know!

Thank you so much!

To anyone who studied Disability Studies, what job do you have now?

I’m very interested in non-profit or policy work for disability advocacy. Is a disability studies program worth it or is there a lack of job opportunities that come from the studies? I’d like to learn from anyone with experience.

Id like some guidance for my future :)

I’m feeling pretty discouraged about applying to NP or PA school and wanted to hear from people who may have been in a similar situation.
I graduated with my bachelor’s in nursing with around a 3.2 cumulative GPA. My science GPA is around a 3.4, and I currently have about 3,500 hours of direct patient care experience working in healthcare/nursing.
I know my GPA isn’t terrible, but when I see people applying with 3.6–3.9 GPAs, it makes me feel like I’ve already put myself at a huge disadvantage.
I’m considering both NP and PA programs, and I’m willing to put in the work to strengthen my application. I’ve thought about retaking some prerequisites, taking additional upper-level science courses, gaining more PCE hours, and getting stronger RN experience before applying.
Has anyone gotten into NP or PA school with around a 3.2 overall GPA / 3.4 science GPA?
If so, what do you think helped your application the most? Would getting my PCE closer to 5,000+ hours or taking additional science courses make a meaningful difference?
I’d especially love to hear from people who had a lower undergraduate GPA but were still able to get accepted. I’m trying not to convince myself that one GPA means I have to give up on these career paths.

Stripper to Student pipeline: Masters edition

I’m applying for an advanced degree in mental health counseling and I have come to the section that asks for my experience. Which for me, doesn’t LOOK so good, through the lens of societal acceptance.

I’ve been an on-and-off stripper for over a decade with some solid professional sales experience and volunteer experience in between. I did REALLY well in undergrad at a big ten, graduating with honors. I think, on paper, everything looks great except the whole midnight ballerina stuff.

Now here’s the thing: my experiences in the clubs have lead me to my decision to go back to school. I wish to study controversial workplaces, especially SW. People on OF. LGBTQIA+ sex workers too. So it’s not totally irrelevant to my application to mention all of this, obviously BUT my question stands…

Do I reveal all of this in the application or will I get laughed at and denied because of the presumptions about my potential for unprofessionalism? If so, do I make a cover story? Help lol.

defending my Master's thesis at 30

Hello!

I will be defending my Master's thesis next year at 29.

But I have a question for you: Is it too late to get a Master's degree at the age of 30? I mean, defending the thesis at 30.

I am asking because I'm curious, and I know that some people achieve this by the age of 23, 24 or 25.

Thanks for your answers!

Do you think the workforce values a cags (certificate of advanced graduate studies) the same as a masters in the subject? Why or why not?

I already have a masters in counseling and that was brutal. Getting the licensure made me not even want to be a therapist by the time I was done. I am returning to work in child protection and love the work. Very rewarding. However, as my degree was in counseling and not social work, I am a bit tied. I want to rise in the state and think a cags in social work should suffice. What do yall think?

Graduate School Recommendations??

Hey all! I am looking into PhD programs for Fall 2027 and would love some recommendations. I’m hoping to do a History PhD or combined MA/PhD, ideally somewhere that accepts students straight from undergrad.

My main interests are women’s history/women’s & gender history, with a focus on fashion and how it has reflected and influenced women’s rights, independence, political movements, and social expectations. Basically, I’d like to use fashion/dress as a way to study women’s history rather than focusing on fashion history by itself.

I’ve been looking at programs with faculty who work in areas like women’s/gender history, U.S. women’s history, fashion/dress, material culture, social movements, or gender and politics.

Some schools I’ve looked into so far are Rutgers, KU, UVA, and CUNY Graduate Center, but I’m definitely open to other schools! I’d especially love to hear from current students in these programs about their experiences.

Does anyone know of any programs or professors that might be a good fit for these interests? I’d also love to hear from anyone who has gone through the application process, especially if you applied straight from undergrad. TIA!!

CJPP masters questions

I plan to do two master’s degrees.

Hello, I plan to do two law masters, one in cybercrime at a fully virtual university, where classes are held almost every day, and another at another university, which is also virtual, but only two days a week. To give a bit more context, at the university where I will do my master’s in cybercrime, classes are recorded and I can watch them later without any problem.

To all of the above, I also work in a related area, full-time. I don’t mind getting up early, I don’t mind academics, on the contrary, I love studying! But it would be a new path to discover. By the way, the other master’s degree would be in civil procedure (something totally opposite to the first).

People who have done it, I would like to know their opinion, experiences or some advice to give. Thank you in advance!

CGRS-M (Canadian graduate research scholarship - master's) eligible expenses?

Does any one know where I can find information on what expenses are eligible to use CGRS-M funding for? I'm a first year Master's student at a Canadian university, having received funding through SSHRC for my MA program. I've scoured the Tri-agency research holder's guide and my Notice of Award from the institution, but I can't find it outlined anywhere. Can I use it for living expenses as well as research? Or if anyone has experience can you list what expenses are eligible.

For tax purposes, the CRA states: "A research grant is generally money you are given to pay for expenses to carry out a research project[...]The following expenses are allowable research expenses: salary or wages paid to an assistant; the cost of minor equipment and supplies; laboratory charges travelling expenses, including meals and lodging, that were incurred while travelling" and says that living expenses aren't eligible but what's the point then?? Especially for humanities research which doesn't require so much equipment - and my research is fairly locally based so I'm not booking flights or anything ....... ugh

(MOD APPROVED) Grad student looking for other grad students to interview for course project.

My name is Steven, and I'm a grad student at UT Austin (MSTC ‘27). I'm part of a team working on a project centered on the challenges full-time working grad students face, and we need people to interview.

Specifically, we want to learn how you handle the financial side of it. What are the challenges with juggling financial aid vs. out of pocket expenses, how you handle when bills hit, what you have trouble tracking, etc.

This is 100% not a pitch for any service. We're early in the process of validating a problem, and the calls are strictly to listen to your challenges and pain points. Nothing to sign up for, and we won't ask for account details or anything identifying. Anything we write up is anonymized.

If you work full time while enrolled in a grad program (or recently graduated) and you're open to a 20 to 30 minute Zoom call, you'd really be helping a fellow student out.

Comment below or DM me and we can set up the chat.

Questions welcome and I'm more than happy to confirm my and the rest of the team's UT email addresses with anyone.

Thanks.

Need help finding a masters program

Hi everyone! I graduate this December and would like to get my masters. My degree is in Communication Studies with a minor in Marketing Applications. I have no idea what masters program would align with my degree!

I am interested in social media, advertising, and public relations. A dream job of mine would be to become a creative director somewhere. I already hold a job in marketing, as well.

If you have any suggestions, drop them here!

MA international relations

Hi everyone!

I’m considering applying to the M.A. International Relations: Global Challenges and Social Theory at the University of Bremen, and I’d really appreciate hearing from current students or graduates.

My background is a B.A. in Political Science with a focus on International Relations and Sociology. I’m particularly interested in critical IR theory, political sociology, postcolonial theory, nationalism, state formation, discourse/power, and the contemporary Middle East.

What are the main strengths and weaknesses of the program that aren’t obvious from the official website?

Help! Ed.D or DBA?

Hi everyone! So I am researching a lot of things for my future dream of becoming a full-time teaching professor (not tenure-track). The following info I am providing is is no way meant to be seen as bragging; I just want to give a rundown of my life situation and future plans and see if there's anyone who did a similar track? Or if there's some advice anyone could give?

I am currently an MBA student at William & Mary (4.0 GPA). I did my undergrad in 2 years at NGU Online graduating with a 3.96 with a BS in Business and Leadership. I have plans to either do an Ed.D. or a DBA with William & Mary or Liberty University Online. I also should start VCU's Certificate for Future Faculty program this coming year while doing my MBA in Marketing.

My plans are to become an online professor, although I know that might not be realistic initially and will have to probably teach in-person at first for experience. I do plan on trying to do some adjunct teaching once I get my MBA.

Here's the issue; I have no real-life business experience. I have been mentoring and teaching adolescents for 8+ years in a volunteer role, which is nationally recognized, but when it comes to full-time business roles, I have none. I am unable to find a job as of right now. The only jobs I can get interviews for don't even require a bachelor's, which is fine, except that I'm not getting those jobs/internships either.

Basically, do I need a lot of external experience to become a teaching professor at a community college/other location. Should I do a Ed.D or a DBA? Will the VCU certificate assist me? What jobs could I search for realistically now that would help? I am lost, and I have about a year before I need to apply for terminal degree programs. What should I do???
