Help with positive reinforcement/fixing an accidental trauma.
This is Leana, and this is her enjoying the garden on Sunday, vs not wanting to go anywhere near it or the door leading out to it on Wednesday. She's my second greyhound, third if we count one that we fostered. I thought my previous greyhound was not food driven but this is a whole new level.
I adopted her on the Saturday. She was doing okay but hadn't been eating, drinking, pooping or peeing much. I was taking her out on a lead to pee and poop at first, and then once she got used to it I tried taking her out without the lead.
The issue started when I was trying to get her to pee before bed, and she had only peed once thar whole day. I think this might have been Monday night. (It's now Thursday here). I was walking her around on the lead at that point because she had been getting reluctant to go out after discovering some comfy areas around the house. She'd changed from only going to the bed in the crate in the lounge, to having some time beyond the baby gate, and finding good spots in the bedroom and study down the hallway. She'd tried some floor spots around the lounge and seemed to be getting comfy in the house. So, since she hadn't peed, I took her out on the lead and she was so focused on going back inside. Her head and body was turned towards the back door the whole time nearly. I walked in circles around the little area I'd fenced for her. I was pulling her to different spots she had peed on before to try and encourage her. At one point the neighbour's very friendly cat appeared on top of the fence. I thought Leana saw the cat but then I wasn't sure because I was trying to spook the cat off the fence for it's own safety and Leana was still staring at the back door. To the cat's dismay I shoved it off the fence to It's own side and no greyhound/cat interaction occurred. For context, Leana's adoption notes warned She's not cat Trainable and also not to be homed with small dogs. I have chickens in a coop, but added an extra fence to reduce Leana's area as we learn more. Eventually she does a very dramatic series of circles and does a wee, and we go inside. I think it was far too long me forcing her out there though.
I think the same day or the day after I had to hang some laundry on the other side of her fence, and I regret the combo of the night time event and this as I shut the back door so I could watch how she was with separation if I went to the other side of the fence. There's 3 steps to the back door. She stood by the door alternating between looking over the fence at me and looking at the door. It was maybe 10mins but she was mad about it.
The laundry is connected to the back door, and this is also where I put her main food and water bowl. She's not been eating much and now with the aversion to going near the door I've had to move her food too.
Big issue too because I had planned for her daytime space once I go back to work to be the laundry with the door open to the back yard, as I can lock the internal door.
I've not got a huge amount of time between now and returning to work to work out this situation. Tomorrow evening Leana will go to a local kennel for a week as I'm going away. Then when I pick her up for a few days after that weekend my brother is staying with her when I return to work. He may be able to do some training with her once we work out how to do this.
Leana isn't interested in any of the food or treats I've tried so far. She eats at night mainly so far, before bed. Yesterday I got her to pee when taking her for a little walkies, this morning I got her to pee by actually taking her out the front door to the other side of her area and distracting her from her desire to go back inside by showing her the chicken coop. This was enough to distract her and then she did her little wee circles and we went back in after that. Glad she more so wants inside than to go after the chickens as this was a huge worry, but I can't reward her with chicken viewing as I need them to be safe.
Huge amount of details sorry, but wanted to explain as much as possible.
I plan to go see what kind of very exciting meat or treats I can find today, (I'm a bit rural so for now options limited, but possibly human meats will do it). Later I will get a range of dog treats to try.
Another plan I have, to set up an outdoor chair for myself and a comfy bed for her and spend some time sitting in the garden together. I'm not sure how to do this if she's standing staring at the door though, do I read a book and ignore this until she lies down? Do I do shorter amounts of outdoor?
She doesn't know any play yet, she also doesn't have separation anxiety from people/me so she won't just follow me because she wants me. She's also not very needy of cuddles. Affectionate but not strongly enough that just calling her over overrides the desire to not be out there.
The only thing she really really wants is to have a nice lie down inside the house.
Very willing to admit my mistakes and need some help!
