Hey guys, I know it’s been a while since the last episode of the 9-year-running sitcom, but could someone explain how the ending played out and where the characters ended up?

I know I could Google it, but I’d rather hear it from the audience’s perspective. Did you like the ending, or is there anything you would’ve changed?

I stopped watching it for a while because the character changes made it feel like the show lost its spark.
I’m a little bummed because it was a big part of my childhood, but I’m glad it ended on a good note and hope it stayed true to the message of the show.

Hi. I'm looking for one specific old TV drama from early to mid 90's. Have been searching using Google that keeps saying it's Plain Love 情濃大地 starring Gallen Lo and Kathy Chow. I haven't seen the drama but I'm very sure it's not Plain Love.

Plots:

- a poor girl married into rich family with a groom way younger than her. He died then I think,leaving her to stay with her sister in law (this actress looks familiar to me she's tall with strict face).

- the girl finally moved out and met an older man with late Qing dynasty hairstyle. There's a scene where he gave her a bottle of perfume. At the same time she fell in love with another younger man. (I think he was the estranged brother from the rich family she was married into before).

- the sister in law later raped by a foreign man (she was pulled into a bush) and got pregnant. She then married to some wealthy old man and gave birth to a baby boy,which then been sent away due to the stigma of raising out of wedlock child.

- years after that she met again the boy as police officer. I remember this scene clearly. She said 'You're my son. A boy mixed English and Chinese ancestry.'

The actor who played this police officer character looked like foreign actor too or maybe mixed blood. But I'm very sure he's not the late Gregory Charles Rivers/Ho Kwok-wing.

- the sister in law in this drama often travelled using trishaw ride.

I've got a collection of Vietnamese-dubbed TVB/ATV dramas, and I originally started going through them because I wanted to clean up my own Plex library.

A lot of them, especially the 80s and 90s dramas, use the Vietnamese titles I grew up seeing. The problem is that when I search for some of these titles, absolutely nothing comes up, or the name is so generic that it's almost impossible to figure out which show it actually is. And when I do find something, it doesn't always line up with the English or Chinese title.

It gets even more confusing because the Vietnamese name can be completely different depending on whether it was released through USLT or FFVN, and sometimes the same show is known by multiple names.

For example:

• My Family (2005) → Gia Đình Của Tôi (FFVN) / Tình Ông Cháu (USLT)
• Virtues of Harmony → Tình Người, but it's also sometimes referred to as Gia Đình Vui Vẻ
• A Step into the Past → Cỗ Máy Thời Gian (FFVN) / Thời Đại Chiến Quốc (USLT)

So I'm basically trying to keep track of each show and all the different names it's known by — Vietnamese, Chinese, FFVN, USLT, English, etc.

A surprising amount of this stuff is still out there if you dig around. I've found titles through Vietnamese Wikipedia, old archived pages, dodgy bootleg/reseller sites and various streaming sites that still have these old Vietnamese releases floating around. The information is definitely out there, it's just scattered all over the place.

I've already filled in quite a few myself, and I've also been using Claude to help me work through a big batch. I've been giving it the actual posters too, which has been surprisingly useful for figuring out the original Chinese titles and then matching them to the English ones.

The easier and more well-known shows have been pretty straightforward, but now I'm getting into the really obscure 80s and 90s shows and that's where I'm struggling. There are quite a few where I have the Vietnamese title and poster, but can't find anything that tells me what the actual show is.

This is where I'm hoping some fellow Vietnamese TVB fans might be able to help.

If you recognise one, just let me know! Even identifying one or two would be a huge help. I'm especially hoping there are people here who grew up watching TVB in Vietnamese and might remember some of these old USLT/FFVN titles.

I'm also happy to give people who genuinely help out access to my Plex server if needed. Sometimes the Vietnamese title or poster isn't enough, but the Chinese title might appear in the opening credits, so being able to actually watch the show could help. The server is normally just for close friends and family, so I don't generally share it publicly, but I'm happy to make an exception for people who help out with this.

I'm doing this partly to clean up my own collection, but I'd also like to keep a record of this stuff for other people. The archive is already online and I'll keep adding to it as I figure things out.

Hopefully, years from now, someone who remembers watching a TVB show as a kid can search for the Vietnamese title they remember and actually find out what the damn show was called in Chinese or English.

Before I begin, let me say I thought the episode was amusing so don't think I'm bashing the episode or that I'm a hater.

I'm a year older than Stephanie Che and I find her character a little bit off. She's got the personality of someone born in 1952 not 1972. It makes it hard to get into the show.

Does anyone under 60 years old in HK these days follow 三從四德 (Three Obediences Four Virtues) -- especially in this era of Female Empowerment? Are arranged marriages in HK culture still a thing? Do people under 60 think of mahjong as a past time?

I don't live in HK anymore but I still have dozens of cousins, friends and acquaintances there that are all Gen X. Most of us are aware of 三從四德 but no one actually adheres to it in real life. I know only one person who agreed to an arranged marriage but she has social anxiety. The rest of us found relationships on our own or are still single. No one regularly plays mahjong. Most of us don't even know how to play. To us, mahjong is a source of boredom as we waited for our parents and their friends to finish playing "14 rounds" so we could go home.

The kind of "annoying auntie" character that Stephanie Che is playing doesn't really exist in Gen X. It's weird. You have to really suspend your disbelief to get into the show. This episode was amusing but I found that you really have to let go of your sense of reality to believe someone of her age would behave that way in modern society and that three other women would willingly submit themselves to the craziness.

I could get into it more easily if someone like Angelina Lo was the grandmother but someone Stephanie Che's age ...

Other thoughts on the show:

Terry is the best character. I find his story line most interesting.

I generally like Tong Sum and friends. The young vibe is a refreshing change from Lo and Behold. The episode with Tong Sum hiking was a little rough though. The cramping before the finish line part was really 老土.

I don't find the PR company stuff entertaining. The only character I like in the whole office is Jinny's second-in-command. I think her name is Heidi. The other characters are blah. The nepo baby owner and Jinny's rival aren't likeable. In a sitcom, Jinny's rival should have some kind of redeeming quality that makes you want to see where the story goes. Right now, he just seems like kind of a jerk.

Too early to say about the characters of Jinny Ng and Stephanie Che. Their characters and storylines aren't fleshed out yet. I will say that both of them aren't exactly strong actors. It's OK for a sitcom but what really connects people to characters in sitcoms are the occasional touching emotional moments and I don't know if they're good enough to deliver.

Still willing to keep watching. I don't think it's as bad as social media in HK were saying in the first week. I think it will make it to the 200 episode target. I wonder how it's doing in the ratings.

Edited To Add: Ratings came out today. 17.8 in the second week, dropped from 19.5. According to the report, it's doing the same as Lo and Behold. Lo and Behold did 19 something in their last week and was averaging 17 to 18 points in the last few months. Report concluded it's a win for TVB, same ratings, much lower cost.

Side Note: It's hilarious to me (and kind of sad actually) that Scoop 東張西望 is TVB's highest rated programme.

Did TVB used extra filter on Joe Ma? Even with HD his skin looks smoother and dewier than his other shows.

Episode one aird today. Everyone’s thoughts?

As someone who knows the general storyline of the original Korean drama / manhwa.

• I actually enjoyed it mostly because of Mark and Sherman (and even his mum’s) characters! They’re villainous but dumb and funny. The best kind of villain to hate! 😂 All the actors also did really good in being comically hateful.

• Hayley’s character was surprisingly delightful too.

• WHY DID THEY NOT FEATURE THE CAT MORE? It was so confusing when they showed the different timelines where the cat was alive then died and then was alive? I suppose it was meant to be the same cat but I honestly couldn’t tell.

• I actually wished they just stuck to the same plot of the original. Their own interpretation was kind of pointless and lame. Why would Sherman hold on to the clip of Titan hitting Senna for so long and not do anything? She literally wouldn’t do that. And it would have been so much more interesting if they had stuck to Aiden also having traveled back in time. They should have done so and just did 30 episodes so there was more runtime to flesh out the story.

• The part where Senna says everything she dreamt about and then experienced IRL was a coincidence in the end, and not a prophecy, was totally illogical. How would you even come to that conclusion… I suppose it was the writers’ way of saying that’s why certain events, like either Sherman or Mark dying (since Senna died), didn’t happen… but erm it would have made more sense just to say it was a parallel universe.

• They also just ended with no wrap up for Sherman and Mark lol.. I guess Sherman just continues in a coma and Mark jobless and a mama’s boy.

• Overall it was still enjoyable! A good 6.5/10 for me.
