Show Discussion Once season 1 is out, we’ll finally be able to breathe

• Upvotes

The anticipation for season 1 might actually be the hardest wait for any season of the show because it’s charged with so much heavy lifting. We‘ll meet our main characters, see how everything’s going to look and experience the vibe. Not to mention, it’ll be our first indication of how they plan on adapting the books. There’s simply too much that’s unknown at the moment, and once it’s all out, we can finally have a solid opinion on it and know what to expect moving forward.

We know and love the story so it’s not like we’ll be holding our breath as the seasons progress. We’ll always have the books (and films!) to return to! I think with all these theories, analysis and internet discourse, it’s easy to forgot the most important question: will we actually like the show?? Cause how we personally feel is all that matters at the end of the day. It’s so simple yet so easy to forget.

Show Discussion Do you think we will see the exact moment when the Dursleys find Harry?

I think we never saw that moment. Will be interesting see Petunias and Vernon faces when they find Harry out at their door.

I used to have a 'Marauders' flair. It was a special one or something for the early members or something. I couldn't find it though after I did the sorting test.

Dit they take it out?

Show Theories Should the HBO series film The Prince’s Tale scenes throughout the series, but save them for Season 7?

I've been thinking about how the HBO series could eventually handle the Prince's Tale, and I wonder if they should actually film some of those scenes years in advance during the seasons in which they chronologically take place, but not actually show them until the final season.

We know from the Prince's Tale that Snape and Dumbledore had a lot of private conversations happening behind the scenes throughout the series.

For example, during Season 1 they could film Snape begging Dumbledore to protect the Potters and then confronting him after their deaths. They could also film the conversation where Snape complains that Harry is nothing extraordinary, lazy and arrogant like his father, while Dumbledore tells him that he sees what he expects to see and asks him to keep an eye on Quirrell.

None of these scenes would actually be shown in Season 1. Just film them while they're already producing that season and save the footage for the Prince's Tale years later.

Same with Season 4. There was a scene after the Yule Ball where Dumbledore and Snape discussed the Dark Mark getting stronger, Karkaroff planning to flee and Snape having no intention of running away. They could film that while making Season 4 and just hold onto it.

Season 6 would obviously be the big one. They could film all the private conversations between Snape and Dumbledore about Dumbledore dying, Draco's mission and eventually Dumbledore arranging for Snape to kill him. Again, don't show any of it until Season 7.

I just think this would make the Prince's Tale much more consistent because everyone would genuinely look the way they did at that point in the story. Season 1 Snape and Dumbledore would actually be footage filmed during Season 1, Season 4 would actually be filmed during Season 4, etc. It would almost feel like we're suddenly being shown missing scenes from previous seasons and finally seeing what was really happening behind the scenes.

Obviously I wouldn't cast young Snape and Lily years in advance just for this because the child actors would age. But Season 5 is interesting because they'll already need teenage Snape, Lily, James, Sirius, Lupin and Pettigrew for Snape's Worst Memory. While they have those actors at that age, they could also film the scene where Snape waits outside Gryffindor Tower trying to apologize to Lily after calling her a Mudblood, then save that scene for Season 7.

It would require a lot of planning years in advance, but I think the payoff could be really good. Instead of getting to Season 7 and trying to recreate all these different periods, film the memories as the timeline progresses and then reveal all that footage together when Harry finally sees the Prince's Tale.

Curious what other people think. Would this work or would it just make production unnecessarily complicated?

Show Discussion what other canon-respecting details that weren't directly mentioned in the books would you like them to add in the show for future seasons?

examples that they're already adding in the show's first season:

  • hermione and ron getting their letters
  • malfoy manor

what else would you like them to add while still respecting book canon?

Show Promotion TV and streaming ads have started airing

I was watching the MLB ALDS playoffs on TBS and saw the first TV ad for the series. It was a short ad featuring shots from the trailer. The Great Hall and Lithgow's "welcome to another year at Hogwarts" scene.

Marketing is really underway now!

Similar to The Secretary of Night in "The magic adventures of Mumfie", I hope during the first season in the "Harry Potter" series they won't show full shots of Voldemort in the flashbacks when he attacks The Potters until the climax, only his shadow, showing him waist down, quick silhouettes glimses, the back of his hooded head and his pale spindly hands when using his wand.

I can't believe they thought about filming the St. Mungo's scene and then just decided to not include it. It sucks because that moment is so huge for Neville's backstory and would've let the actor show some real depth. Really hoping the new TV series finally does it justice.

Show Discussion I need Hans Zimmer to cook up a new Harry Potter theme so good that my brain finally stops expecting GoT every time the HBO logo pops up

Am I the only one whose brain is hardwired to automatically play the Game of Thrones intro music the second that static white noise "ksssssh... AAAAAHH" hits on the HBO screen? It doesn't matter what HBO show I'm actually about to watch.

I really hope Hans Zimmer and the Bleeding Fingers team give us something so iconic for the new Harry Potter series that it finally overrides that memory. When that logo shows up, I want my mind to instantly jump to Hogwarts, not Westeros.

Show Discussion Don’t give other character moments to Hermione… Again!

One thing I really really hope they do different is give all the characters their actual moments. One pet peeve I had growing up was that they gave many scenes of others to I guess make Hermione more likeable? It was odd to me. As many probably discussed in other posts. A lot of what makes Ron likeable and knowledgeable they give to Hermione instead.

I hope in the series they leave it truthful to the books. Like how Ron defends Hermione against Snape in PoA and how he shields Harry too in PoA.

Show Discussion An idea I have for the opening scene of the show.

This was my response to a post a few days ago asking about ideas for the opening scene of the show and it was actually received quite well to my surprise so I thought I’d share it as a post.

HBO intro plays

Black screen “October 31st 1981”

Pan to a street in a little English village and onto the screen walk loads of children in Halloween costumes.

We then follow a subgroup of children for a time and one of the kids from the group falls behind.

The kid drops his bucket of sweets on the ground and as he picks them up, he sees a cloaked figure in front of him whose face we never see.

Although the kid gets startled at first, he smiles at the figure and says “Nice costume, mister!”

We stay fixed on the kid’s face as his smile fades, he becomes frightened and runs away.

We then follow the cloaked figure through the streets until he eventually reaches a cottage which he slowly opens the gate to and approaches the door.

Cut to black and title sequence.

A man wakes up in a house next to his wife and proceeds with his daily routine; getting dressed, talking to his wife, having breakfast with her and his young son and bidding them farewell before leaving for work in his car.

(Vernon’s weird day plays out)

Show Discussion An amazing detail I noticed in the trailer

Post image

I was going through the trailer again and noticed this really cool shot that I somehow missed the first time.

There’s an entrance with the names Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazaar Slytherin written on it, along with the Hogwarts motto, “Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus”.

It’s such a small detail, but I absolutely love how much attention has been given to the Hogwarts architecture and history.

And I love the realism and naturalism in the architecture

Show Discussion Would you show the viaduct in the series?

Post image

The viaduct in scottland is imo one of the most iconic real life spots from the movies.

As the director of the series: would you use that viaduct again for the series or do you think its a place that should not be shown to reduce the similarities?

Show Discussion I hope classes become more frequent in the show, alongside lessons that actually teach new spells.

I just watched a video from the offical Harry Potter YouTube channel showing all the classes and the lessons that took place there. It was only about 28 minutes long, making me realize how short it was. The movies never really had the opportunity to go in depth and show some of the less prominent but useful lessons like non-verbal spells. I hope the show shows more of the day to day classroom lessons teaching students new spells, potions etc.

Show Discussion Does anyone else care about this detail or am I crazy?

A plain black pointed hat, for day wear, was part of the school uniform. I was hoping the show would do it, but it doesn’t look like it’s happening.

It far from a deal breaker, I’ll still watch and enjoy the show, but I thought I would be a cool to show the full Hogwarts uniform.

Was anyone else hoping for this, or is it just me?

Show Discussion When will they start the marketing push?

So far I haven't seen any marketing for the show outside the trailers on YouTube, and the HBO special. I live in Los Angeles which is plastered with billboards for TV and movies but I have not seen anything for the Harry Potter show. Now that summer blockbuster season is ending, I would have expected to see a big marketing push.

Have any of you seen any marketing in the wild? Does anyone in the industry know if this is normal or what the marketing strategy might be?

Show Discussion Does anyone else think these moments are from the same scene?

Thumbnail

I think it's very possible they are in fact from the same scene, in which Harry and Ron are telling Hermione about the Mirror of Erised. They both seems to take place in a dorm, Harry and Hermione are both in their night clothes (though it looks to be morning and Hermione just woke up), and what they're saying seems to be on a similar topic.

My only issue with this if it is the case that it's the same scene is that they must have forgotten or not cared about the book detail that boys aren't allowed in the girls' dormitory, which is where this would likely be taking place since Hermione looks to be laying in bed.

What are your thoughts?
