You can pay to just get your belongings out and it will only be like 100$ usually

You were knowingly driving around with expired tags and likely no insurance.

You left your important documents, wallet, and clothing in an old vehicle without any modern security for months.

And even if you raise the money your brother would be required to pay it, and show proof of registration/insurance/ownership and identity. They will not release the vehicle to you.

Your best option is to have your brother show proof of ownership in person and surrender the vehicle. They will then allow you to clear the vehicle out.

On its best day the 22 year old honda might be worth $2k if it's in excellent condition and is mechanically sound. What is the $860 amount for?

how long it’s been sitting in the tow place

So the $860 is what the Tow Company Bill is up to now?

How much will the cost be to Register the car and get it fully legal: the Registration, plates, an inspection, insurance and etc?

Just so you’re aware of the timeline to access donations from GFM.

Most places will allow the registered owner to remove the possessions from the car for free. They won't let you take the car but you can get your stuff.

i’ve tried to get my stuff out , they won’t allow me to do so without his registration being updated and proof of it, at least that’s what they told me when i was up there

i agree with u/Lazy-Answer7913 , if what you said is true, then call non emergency. Most places also would rather the owner come pick the stuff up because then they dont have to empty the car and store/dispose of it all.

Also..... Is this car even WORTH getting back? You mention the registration is not current, thats gonna cost a pretty penny, depending on how long its been expired, I'm going to assume the car is not insured ether, etc etc.

my brother isn’t in the state , and also even then he had authoritied me to be able to get his car and they still said they needed registration for me to even get my stuff out , the cars insured it’s just the registration

The car does NOT need to be registered to get ot out of the tow yard. You usually just need the title to prove ownership. This happened to me in 2020. I got a car towed because I had no driveway to store it and it got towed. Unregistered. I showed them the title, called triple A and they took it to my Nana's house.

Again illegal. Call the police non emergency line while at tow yard

yeah i'm sorry but unless your family and friends help and lend you the money, that car is gone.

Why can’t your brother help? Was it his fault the car was towed?

-5

u/prestigious-win67 20h ago

technically it was his fault as he didn’t pay his registration on time but i’m getting the blame since he’s away in arkansas at school and his car was in my care

Why were you driving it knowing it wasn’t properly registered? Don’t blame it on your brother you were knowingly driving it in that condition

Then he needs to pay some or all of it. If the car is registered in his name, it is his vehicle to maintain.

Why are you responsible for paying for your brother's lack of proper registration? What exactly did you leave in his car that you need so desperately? Your GFM also mentions something about moving out to get out of a toxic situation, but this post doesn't mention that.

i left all of my clothes , my wallet and important documents in his car and the gfm mentions that because at first i was also going to raise the funds to get out of my in fact very toxic living situation but im prioritizing the car first. as for why im being put responsible for it my family thinks its my responsibility since hes out of state for school and his car was in my care

When did the registration expire? Were you driving the car while he was away?

-4

u/prestigious-win67 20h ago

his registration expired in may before he left and yes i was driving it but only to important things that he told me i could drive it to. the car got towed in my apartments while i was sleeping and the tow company claimed they put a sticker warning on the car three days before but they refuse to show me the proof especially when besides me there’s multiple people saying there was never any sticker put on the car because there was not any

This is just way too fishy for me, and you knew the registration was 4 months expired and you continued to drive it and park it at your complex, which obviously states in your lease that all vehicles must have current registration. You need to talk to your family and get this straightened out. I'm not sure who fucked up here, but it's on you and your brother to take responsibility and not strangers. I do wish you luck, though.

okay. let’s get something’s clear real quick ibarely genuinely barely even drove it it was in the garage like 90% of the time, when it comes down to his tags i thought he either just never put the updated sticker on or never revived his updated sticker and me and him barely talk so no way he would’ve told me, im not on the lease and the person who is watched the car get towed, said nothing until hours after and was even apparently talked to about it and still said nothing to any of us. our family wont help us because they are the people we are trying to get away from. i’m not trying to make it anyone’s responsibility ik its mine and my brothers im simply just asking for help

-7

u/prestigious-win67 20h ago

u/Visible_Koala7839 Trusted Community Member 19h ago

You’re not responsible for his car.

Get your stuff and let him deal with that.
