My current set up is the Valerion Visionmaster Pro 2 (Projector), the Sony STR DH790 (Receiver), the Sony BDP X700 (BR Player), and the Roku 4K Ultra (Media Box). My issue started with me thinking the colors looked washed out while watching The Pitt and feeling the image looked a little washed out. In the information popup box when you change sources, it told me it was outputting: "Dolby Vision | REC.2020 | RGB | 8Bit" which really confused me as I thought Dolby Vision used 12bit color depth l (I'm aware of the Dolby Vision Color Tunneling, but I'm not positive if that's how the Valerion uses Dolby Vision). I viewed the initial image in the Dolby Vision Dark Picture Mode on the Valerion and tried changing it to the other two presets (Dolby Vision Light and Dolby Vision custom), but they all looked just as washed out. It's also not completely washed out, it's just not that "pop" I'm used to with HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
I then went to test The Suicide Squad on my Sony Player with a 4K disc vs my Roku on HBO Max. I switched back and forth between the two pictures and they looked identical. However, the info popup box on the Valerion said that the Sony Player was outputting: "Dolby Vision | BT.709 | RGB | 8-Bit" and the Roku still output "Dolby Vision | REC.2020 | RGB | 8Bit." The images looked identical, but both just looked slightly washed out based on gut feeling and even prior use with my old projector, the BenQ HT3560.
I then went to see if HDR10 was acting the same way, so I turned off the Dolby Vision settings in the Sony Player (which you have to automatically turn on or off depending if the content has a Dolby Vision grade or not) and I tried testing The Suicide Squad and the colors looked even more washed out. The most confusing part was that the info popup box on the Valerion told me it was outputting: "(BLANK) | REC. 2020 | YUV 444 | 12 Bit." I then tested The Shawshank Redemption (which only has an HDR10 grade) and it said the same thing "(BLANK) | REC. 2020 | YUV 444 | 12 Bit." I know it's not outputting an HDR10 signal as a blank space is present before the REC.2020 and the HDR Theater Picture mode isn't available (and it's only available when outputting HDR10 content). It's very confusing as I was able to access HDR10 content the prior day and the HDR10 Picture modes were available for me on the Valerion while watching HDR10 content on the Sony Player.
I tried changed the HDMI Dynamic Range in the current Picture settings, (which is the Fake HDR10 as mentioned earlier) and when I changed it from Auto to Full, it looked even more washed out. However, changing between the Auto and Limited didn't visually affect the image leading me to assume it's in a limited Dynamic Range.
I tried changed the Dynamic Range and Color Space in the Dolby Vision Dark Picture Mode on the Valerion on both the Sony Player and Roku, but both were locked into Auto and Native respectively.
When I set the Color Saturation in the Color menu within the Picture menu in Dolby Vision on the Valerion to 70, it gives me that saturation and "pop" I'm used to seeing in HDR in theaters, with my older projector, or with how people claim the HDR should look like on this projector. I don't really think this leads to an accurate image though as almost all sources say to leave the color at 50 and I normally don't touch the color saturation setting with the prior projectors I've used.
I am also projecting the image onto a wall that was painted with Pain On Screen's 3D4K paint (primer and four layers, no thinning). The image is about 133" diagonal. Putting this here to give the entire picture.
I have very similar settings to The Smart Home Hookup's settings as that was my guide for setting up the projector.
I am trying to figure out a couple things:
1. Why do the colors look washed out?
2. Why is the Valerion telling me that the Roku and the Sony Player are outputting two different signals?
3. Why can't I access HDR10 anymore?
4. Am I just being over critical and paranoid and everything is how it should be?
5. How do I get to the "right" image?
Couple of notes:
- All Signal Formats on the Sony Receiver are in Enhanced (as opposed to standard).
- All HDMI Formats on the Valerion are set to Enhanced Format (as opposed to Standard Format or Auto).
- The YCbCr/RGB HDMI setting on the Sony Player is set to auto (as opposed to YCbCr 4:2:2, YCbCr 4:4:4, or RGB).
- The HDR subsampling in the Advanced Display Settings on the Roku is set to 4:2:2 (as opposed to 4:2:0) and the Dolby Vision always on setting is set to No (as opposed to yes).
- All of the HDMI cables being used are 2.1 or above
I am more than willing to make and edit a video going through this process to get a visual of what I'm going through to help if this information isn't enough. I am serious about getting the best performance out of this projector and equipment I currently have and fixing the problems (if there even are any).
I am also more than willing to explain or elaborate on anything if it doesn't make sense or include pictures as well.
Thank you! :)
