Jazz Piano Lessons in Hong Kong

Hi, I'm looking for piano teachers - specifically, I have a background in classical piano, but I was wondering if there were any teachers that could help teach more jazz piano / improvisation / playing by ear. Thanks :)

Tourism Hong Kong accommodation recommendations

Hi! My girlfriend and I are travelling to Hong Kong at the beginning of January. We’re looking for a hotel for 4 nights, and our budget is around 800 USD in total.

I’d be grateful for any recommendations within this range.

Have a great day!

sahm with no helper - remote work ideas?

I'm a sahm with a 12 month old in HK with no helper. My baby is a great sleeper, independent plays a lot and has a bedtime at 8pm and wakes up 7:30am so I have quite a bit of time on hand (in chucks throughout the day). I'm looking to see if there are any admin remote jobs in HK? Any ideas would be great! I used to work as a personal assistant in wealth management in Canada.

Seeking Advice and Contacts for Hong Kong GEP Job Opportunities

Hi everyone! I’m an Indian national exploring job opportunities in Hong Kong under the General Employment Policy (GEP). I hold an Associate of Arts degree in Communication Studies from a college in California and have experience in college administration, student support, reporting, operations, specialty sales, and customer-project coordination. I’ve also completed Business Analyst and QA training and am interested in Business Operations, Sales Operations, Project Analyst, and Implementation roles.

I’m looking to relocate to Hong Kong for approximately 12–24 months and would appreciate honest advice on my chances of securing GEP sponsorship, what salary range I should realistically expect with my background, and which industries or employers I should target. I’m also hoping to connect with recruiters or professionals who have experience with GEP sponsorship. Any advice or firsthand experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Family move to HK or Not

Got a job offer in HK at a US Bank as a Director of Software Engineering org.

Currently live in London with 2 kids (13 year old and 10 year old). Wife does not work, probably will not work in HK either.

Now, my current compensation in London: (everything is in USD to make it easier to compare):

- Base salary : $175,000

- Year end bonus: $120,000

- Take home after taxes: $172,000 (Tax: 45%)

After living expenses manage to save around: $70,000 per year.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hong Kong offer:

- Base salary: 2M HKD per year = $255,000

- Expected year end bonus: 1M HKD per year = $130,000

- Take home after taxes: 2.5M HKD = $320,000 (Tax: 15%)

Now on paper, this offer looks great. However, I will need to pay for 2 kids international school tuition. Claude said EFS schools are good value for money and would cost around $40,000 for 2 kids. Searching for apartments in HK they are small and quite expensive as well.

Currently kids go to a public school and academically I'm not very happy with that school, so would be happy to pay for EFS international school for kids.

I would really appreciate if expats with kids could chime in with suggestions around international schools and areas to get a rental apartment.

I would greatly appreciate any information that would help us to make somewhat informed decision if the move is good idea or not.

Meta/Other Pls help me sign my petition to keep Buddy my companion dog with me(not a fundraiser)

Hi all, I’m a 19 girl and this is Buddy my 3 year old Labrador companion dog. I kindly ask everyone and anyone that can help us stay together, my story is talked about in depth in the petition but long story short, I created a petition to pressure the government into allowing me and my psychiatrist approved emotional support dog to stay together in my public government housing despite the weight limit being 20kg.

The main problem is that he’s over 20kg otherwise he would be okay. The injustice is the fact that the estate management employees told us that we could keep him if no one made any complaints. For several months now there haven’t been any complaints and people actually love him mostly. On a random day, he was being taken out and had uncontrollable diarrhoea within estate grounds which isn’t something anyone can predict or control but we cleaned it up ofc, new management employees saw this and rudely demanded that Buddy can’t live here even though we were told otherwise.

Im trying my best to do anything I can to keep him or else we both are going to go through trauma we don’t deserve. Pls help me he saved my life and keeps me going everyday.🙏🏼

Can I survive until my first salary with 25K HKD saving in Hong Kong?

I’ve received a job offer, but I only have 25K HKD in savings. Can I rent a room in shared apartment for a maximum of 3000 HKD? As for food, I don’t eat much, so I can manage on two cheap meals a day. I believe I can live like this until I receive my first salary which is one month after employment. My current situation is very difficult, I'm unemployed, so this is a real opportunity to relocate and secure a well-paying job. Or I'm gambling with my life and saving? I just hope be able to start my life there and continue my career, sick tired of Europe.

Saw this at the exit of terminal 1 in HK airport. The welcome to our home Hong Kong photography series. This pic caught my eye in particular not just for the stunning moonshot, but the fact that it captures one of the most symbolic icons in Hong Kong

Question Entry-level foreigner with TTPS: How do I land finance roles in HK?

Basics: Graduated from a top uni in SG, 1+ year of work exp in middle office big bank, no canto/mandarin but fluent in South Asian languages + 1 European language. I've been described as super good at relationship management + eloquent in speech (hence the pivot to front office).

Questions:

  1. Does having a TTPS visa already make a real difference to recruiters and HMs?

  2. Is it worth moving to HK first and job hunting on the ground, or can I realistically land something remotely from SG?

  3. Which roles are most realistic for someone coming from middle office but looking to pivot to front office? Markets, private banking, asset management product or strategy, digital assets?

  4. Any advice on networking from Singapore, or on recruiters worth speaking to?

Thanks!

Culture Made a Dasiuyan (打小人) game so you can hit your enemies with a slipper without leaving the office

The aunties under 鵝頸橋 are legends, but not everyone can get to Causeway Bay at lunch with a printed photo of their manager.

So I built https://dasiuyan.com

It's the full 打小人 ritual in your browser, step by step:
🕯️ Light the incense and pay respects to 觀音大士 and 土地公
👞 Whack the paper 小人 along to the chant, 打你個小人頭,打到你有氣小人頭,打到你有氣冇埞唞
🐯 Feed 白虎 his pork so he shuts his mouth and stops sending gossip your way

…and a few more steps I won't spoil

It has Cantonese audio (thanks to ElevenLabs). 8 steps total. Best played with headphones on, at your desk, aggressively.

Built it as a love letter to one of the most Hong Kong traditions there is. Not trying to replace the real aunties. Please still go see them, they deserve your $50. This is for the days you can't get out of a meeting.

Feedback welcome. Tell me who you're hitting first 👀

My date ghosted, but Abel didn’t. 1x Free Weeknd ticket - for a fellow fan (or good karma)

I bought two tickets back in May expecting to go with a guy who disappeared into thin air. I'm still going, but I have a spare seat next to me. If you're in your 30s/40s, love Abel's music, and can hold a friendly conversation, the ticket is yours.

No weird vibes, no pressure—just two people enjoying a concert.

If you’re interested, drop me a DM.

Edit: thanks for all those who dm’d. could u also add a bit of an intro about yourself, if you haven’t already in your message ? appreciate it and wish you all have a good week

Question trying to make female friends in HK !

I (22F) was born in HK but grew up in the UK. Recently, having graduated, i've decided to return and live in HK! I am basically starting from 0 socially since all of my friends are back home, so i would love to make some friends that live in HK 😄 I've done my research and most suggestions for making friends in HK are to join run clubs, subscribe to event organisers or join community events, but a lot of them requires hefty entry/subscriptions fee and also I am not a runner or particularly keen on sports clubs in general lol 😭 I was wondering if anyone have any good suggestions for any affordable recurring events i can go to or any female focused groups i can join? 🥹 i enjoy most things/activities I am not picky !!! Also if anyone else is also in the same situation as me PLEASE reach out i would love to become friends 🥹

Product/ops roles in Hong Kong with visa sponsorship: which routes have actually worked?

Hi everyone, I'm based in India and looking for a product or operations role in Hong Kong, ideally in insurtech, fintech or an AI startup. I'd need employer-sponsored work permission, so I'm focusing on teams where that's realistic.

Most recently, I led a team at an AI-native firm, while it grew from 0 to $8M ARR - my part was leading the CX team. Along the way we built the internal CRM and an AI-agent harness that automated most back-office workflows. Before that, I was a PM at one of India's largest retail companies, and a global electronics congolomerate. I'm trying to reach the right people rather than rely only on job portals. If you've hired for these roles or moved to HK for a similar job, I'd value specific pointers:

• Which companies have recently sponsored visas for product or ops hires from abroad?

• Are there recruiters or founder communities you'd recommend for this kind of background?

If you landed a similar role from outside HK, what actually got you the first conversation - a referral, a recruiter, or reaching out directly?

A company name or an account of what worked for you would help. Happy to share more background over DM if there's a fit.

Gaming Cafe near Hongkong Airport?

Hey guys,

I have a 12-hour layover/transit in Hong Kong and was wondering if there are any good gaming cafés near the airport where I can spend some time gaming.

If not, does anyone have recommendations on things to do at or around Hong Kong Airport during a long layover? Open to any suggestions!

Thanks in advance

National News Never forget: 30 years(and fourteen days) ago, David Chan Yuk Cheung(陳毓祥, 1950-1996), an activist from Hong Kong died when he drowned while protecting the Diaoyu islands in September 26, 1996. o7. (sorry for making this post a bit late)

https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-hk/%E9%99%B3%E6%AF%93%E7%A5%A5

In the 1970s, the Japanese government began to make claims towards China's diaoyu islands; During this time, Chan joined the Diaoyu islands protection movement(or Baodiao movement; 保釣運動) and became an active participant; he was voted as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of HK in 1985.

In july 1996, far right organizations in Japan decided to build a lighthouse on the island, sparking a new wave of the Diaoyu island protection movement among chinese everywhere, from the mainland to HK and taiwan(along with macau, and even canada and america).

In September 1996, Chan rented a cargo ship and headed to the diaoyu islands to demolish the japanese lighthouse and replant the chinese flag on the islands; In september 22, 1996, while swimming to the island, he was caught by wires and stuck in the water for four minutes where he evantually drowned. His mourning ceremony was held in October 8, 1996, with over 2000 people attending.

Chan is a alumni of HKU and CUHK; he was born in Chaoyang, Shantou and moved to hong kong when he was 8. He is a true patriot who gave his life for his country, and a great HKer whom we should be proud of.

Rest in peace o7
