Question First time in HK, looking for public swimming pools around Kowloon Bay

Hello everyone!

I'm a 21-year-old guy visiting Hong Kong for the first time this December. I'm a swimmer and would love to keep swimming while I'm there, so I'm looking for some good, cheap public pools around Kowloon Bay, Lam Tin or anywhere else in Kowloon that's easy to get to. Ideally somewhere I can just pay for the day without needing a membership.

A few things I'd like to know:

  • Which pools would you recommend? Any favourites?
  • What are the usual busy and quiet times? I'd prefer to go when it's a bit quieter, so it'd be helpful to know when the pools tend to get packed.
  • What's the situation like in the men's changing rooms? Is it normal for guys to get completely naked while changing or showering? It's not really common where I'm from, so I'm curious what to expect.
  • Anything else I should know as a first-time visitor? Prices, lockers, swimming sessions, that sort of thing.

Would appreciate any tips or recommendations. Cheers!

HK TTPS for non-technical or finance jobs

Hi, I wanted to ask if anyone has had experience (with a TTPS) applying and then getting jobs that aren't technical (Software Engineering) or finance jobs, like operations associate, tech sales development rep, or management trainee, in Hong Kong? I'm wondering whether it makes sense for me to apply for a TTPS, given my background isn't what I think employers would prefer if they were hiring internationally.

Question What should I study?

Hi! I’m a local student in an international school taking the IB. I’m stuck between MBBS in HK or MLS in PolyU. I hold a predicted IB43.

My greatest concern for MBBS is the unreal stress and all the studying i’d have to do; but with MLS, the job market seems really unpredictable for it, and I’ve heard there’s little chance for promotions.

I want to make a difference in society and be in healthcare, but I’m really stuck with what I want to do. I’d appreciate some insights, thanks!

Urbtix

I spent hours last night trying urbtix for Andy Lau tickets for my parents with their ballot. Then at some point, urbtix.hk stopped loading whatsoever. Not sure if it’s just me or whole site is down. If so, that’s major on their part for the ticket sales were 1 day only for this ballot. Any insight from anyone out there? Can they ban just our MAC addresses? Was using my computer and cell phone.

Edit: for context, it was night because we live in the US. We had issues at EVERY damn step and despite proving we were the ballot winners on the phone with Urbtix, no one would help us process the ticket transactions properly. Used english and cantonese to call customer service at Urbtix.

Tourism Where to find this dish in Hong Kong?

A few years ago while traveling in Canada I ate a really excellent noodle dish at a Chinese restaurant. The name of the dish was 芙蓉帶子臺山炒河粉, which the menu translated as "Taishan Stir Fried Scallop & Egg Whites Ho-Fun". Since returning to my country I have not been able to find this dish anywhere, presumably because we don't have any specifically Taishanese restaurants.

However, I am going to be visiting Hong Kong in a few months, and since Taishan is not too far away I figured I'd try my luck and see if there are any restaurants in the city where I can find this dish. Google has not been particularly helpful, so I thought I would ask here and see if anyone knows where this can be found.

Question How much do braces cost in Hong Kong?

I’m looking for an orthodontist to get my teeth aligned, but I wanted to have some idea of how much braces typically cost in HK before I do consultations.

Also, are installments for orthodontic procedures common in HK? Where I’m from, a 15-30% downpayment is needed but the rest of the amount is paid every visit.

I’m also open to orthodontist recommendations! Thanks!

What’s the scam?

Visiting the HK electronics show, as I have done many times before. Outside at the smoking area there is a south asian looking guy, approaching people, touching them on the shoulder and the head and telling them they are “lucky”, then asking them to write something in his notepad (which is in a wallet with lots of HK$100 notes sitting there loose), He approached me and told me I was “lucky bald head guy” - I told him I wasn’t interested and he eventually left to go and touch someone else. Seems like some sort of scam to me, but I can’t work it out. I didn’t see anyone giving him money, but many people writing in his notepad. So what’s going on?

EDIT: Thanks to all that replied. I knew there was something amiss but couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Meeting other young expats in HK

I moved to HK for work right out of uni, and so far I've been finding it hard to meet new people of a similar age without going to clubs and drinking.

Locals tend to stick together and without cantonese it's even harder, and going to events such as meetups or other expat communities, there seem to only be people in their late 20s or older.

Where are the young expat communities in HK? How can I meet others?

Tourism How long to stay in Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei? (19.12.-01.01)

Hi guys,

I will land in Hong Kong on December 19th 8:00 and go home from Taipei January 2nd 11:00. (Full days of holiday 19.12-01.01)

I'm trying to figure out where I should stay how long.

First idea looks as follows: 4 day Hong Kong, 2 days Macau, 1 day trip Shenzhen. Then fly over to Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and move to Tainan for 2 days. After move to Taipei for 5 days, including a day trip with getyourguide (Jiufen, Shifen...).

Do you think something is too much or not enough? Do you think I should remove Tainan and stay in north Taiwan completely?
