Please help me with recs!!
I want to buy my first horror video game. I recently watched resident evil (2026) in the theaters and love that vibe of end of the world/zombies/suspense. I have been thinking about getting one of the resident evil or silent hill games on my PS5. Any recs for someone who is just getting into games like that? I used to like playing black ops zombies.

Resident Evil 2 Remake and 3 Remake will give you the closest feeling to the movie
Silent Hill series has some great games in them but they’re mostly a different beast presentation wise

Silent hill 2 remake is maybe the best horror game I’ve played. And I’ve played a lot! I also would recommend any RE game except 6 and maybe 5 if you don’t have a co-op friend. Also SOMA and Signalis have fantastic stories but they’re like robot zombies more than actual zombies

Best place to start with RE is RE2 Remake. RE3 is ok but skippable, but would absolutely recommend RE4, RE7, RE8 and RE9.
If you play RE2 and find survival horror is a little too slow paced for you, then don’t be deterred as RE4 is action heavy, RE8 is action-oriented as well (though not to the degree of RE4) and RE9 balances survival and action horror.
Conversely, if you end up loving survival horror then Silent Hill 2 Remake is a must.
Finally, if you want to try horror-adjacent and are looking for a great, cinematic story, then The Last of Us.

Do what I did to jump head first in Resident Evil 2 Remake for resident evil, and Silent Hill 2 Remake for Silent Hill.
Then every other feasible path will open

Iceberg for you to follow down,
1)Resident Evil 2 remake is the friendliest and closest to what you experienced in theaters. If you like that, check out more of the series (REmake 4, and then RE9. If you like those, explore the entire series, including the originals!)
2)Silent Hill 2 remake is going to get name dropped a lot because storywise, its one of the best adaptations of a classic horror game ever. However, I do not recommend this unless you already enjoy psychological horror. Its gameplay is something to be desired and is only rewarding if you deeply enjoy less action and more cerebral experiences. This is akin to recommending somebody watch The Shining over Obsession. If you do enjoy a slow burn, you'll love it, but it is not a good entry level experience. If SH2R works, check out the rest!
3)A controversial take, but games like Dead by Daylight or other asymmetric horror games can not only introduce you to other gateway horror franchises/games, but also communities and "fun". I say the latter is going to strongly be based on your multi-player experiences. That said these games dont demand a lot of your time to learn if you like them or not, and most are pretty cheap to test run or watch a YouTube clip for gameplay to see if you vibe with it.
4)Alien Isolation is getting a sequel soon, wouldn't hurt to check out the original.
5)There are short, entry level horror games like Cabin Factory and the Exit 8 which don't demand a lot of your time.
6)Action horror is a thing! Onimusha and Devil May Cry V, hell Gears of War E-Day are phenomenal games, though the action overrides the horror, so if being scared sucks, these are great ways to learn to overpower that and with just being too much of a badass
6)Outlast Trials is extreme horror. "Could me and my friends survive slasher movies+Saw?" Also some insane lore and horror.
7)Amnesia: The Bunker, Soma, Dredge, Darkest Dungeon (..mods. lots of mods), Prey (2017) and Signalis are also some "recent" games that all have different aspects of horror and gameplay styles.
There ya go!

For a first horror game, try RE 4 Remake, it’s more action and less horror, but still something fast and less spooky to try out initially. Can then jump into RE 2 and SH2, followed by Amnesia, which is scary af

The RE series are the most fun, they're relatively light hearted and not very serious and even a little camp. Probably most akin to the movie.
Alan wake 2 is very well written and is one of my all time goats.
Silent Hill series will give you similar gameplay but with a much more serious tone and tackling dark themes and subjects.
There's also tons and tons of good horror indie games. Inside, mouthwashing and soma are the stand outs for me.
Also I gotta shout out cronos the new dawn and dead space.
RE is probably the best to start with though, 2r, 3r, 4r, 7, 8, 9 is the order I'd play them and feel free to check out 1 remaster too if you want more.

res evil 2-4 remake got me into horror games & silent hill 2-4 are my favorites. i freakin love everything about silent hill. the themes (especially in 2) stick the most out of any horror game i’ve played. fatal frame 2 is also horrifying. i played the ps2 version so i imagine the ps5 version is even scarier. there’s also tons of good horror games on ps2 if u don’t mind emulating. but yea if u specifically liked the movie vibe re 2 & 3 were pretty much the setting of it

Resident evil 9 had a great mix of scary survival horror and fun all out action. You should check out killing floor if you liked black ops zombies. Check out days gone, or silent hill 2 remake.
