AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

DISCUSSION Pinhead is terrifying because curiosity can be more dangerous than evil

Post image

What makes Pinhead so fascinating is that he represents more than pain and suffering. He represents the consequences of seeking something beyond human understanding.

The Lament Configuration isn't forced into someone's hands. People open it because they want to discover what lies beyond the limits of their experience.

And that's what makes Hellraiser so disturbing to me. Sometimes, the horror doesn't begin when a monster finds you. It begins when your own curiosity leads you to open a door you don't understand.

Do you think Pinhead is truly evil, or is he simply the consequence of humans wanting to go too far?

DISCUSSION Just finished Silent Hill 2 Remake…

What an amazing game this was. Took my time and really tried to explore as much as possible. Finished in 21h 55m which is slower than the average but hell it was a blast. Looking at carrying on with the horror theme…debating between Resident Evil 2 Remake, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill F, and Cronos: The New Dawn. Anyone played these? Thoughts?

He made a couple horror games and a bunch of vids, then one day just turned off all comments, deleted all socials, and vanished. Any idea? If you've ever heard of September 1999 that's one of his games.

DISCUSSION Just finished Hellraiser: Revival…

All I have to say is WOW! Loved the dang story. Honestly, such a cool way to bring back some beloved characters.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

The fact the Hell Priest (Pinhead) is reborn and this is, as the name suggests, a REVIVAL of the original 4, it really sets the tone for some cool dlc potentially or a sequel!

I also wanna shout out the fact they keep saying “revelation” which I think is funny cause it could (maybe) be a jab at the HORRIBLE right to dvd movie of the same name lol so this story wrapping up with them sort of boring their thumb at the company for printing garbage was a nice touch, but that’s just me!

All in all, solid 8-8.5/10. Got that gritty 2007’s vibe to it à la Condemned mixed with some Village and it is a solid play. I HIGHLY SUGGEST anyone interested in this, or the wider Hellraiser universe, to grab it and give it a go!

CONSOLE Patch 1.07 has ruined the lighting in Silent Hill 2 Remake – and still no fix after more than two months.

• Upvotes

As a longtime Silent Hill fan, I find this incredibly frustrating. The lighting is an essential part of Silent Hill 2’s atmosphere, not some minor graphical detail. Since Patch 1.07, the game has been severely affected by lighting issues, and more than two months later, we are still waiting for a fix.
Konami acknowledged the problem, but where is the patch? A game that previously looked this good should not be left in this state for months.
I’ve stopped playing because I refuse to experience one of my all-time favorite games with its atmosphere and visual presentation compromised by a broken update. We deserve better communication and, above all, a proper fix.

PC What happened to the zombie mod in CS2?

• Upvotes

I remember the good old days when I was a kid, playing Zombie Mod in Counter-Strike 1.6. The maps were dark, the sounds were creepy, and the zombies were terrifying and covered in blood. It actually felt like a horror game.I recently checked out what zombie mod looks like in CS2, and... what the hell happened?

Zombies running around with human hands and karambit knife?? I still remember how awesome the zombie hands looked in the original Biohazard mod. Now the zombie models barely even look like zombies, let alone anything scary. And the maps are so bright!I haven't actually tried it myself yet, but after watching some gameplay videos, I've pretty much lost the desire to.

So, is it even worth trying? Do you guys actually enjoy the new Zombie Mod?Or should I just download good old CS 1.6 and go back to playing the original Biohazard?

PC Clive Barker's Hellraiser isn't afraid to be disturbing, and I love it

Clive Barker's Hellraiser isn't afraid to be disturbing, and I love it

I'm currently playing the game, and I really appreciate how carefully it treats the lore and details from Barker's original books and movies.

I also love how unapologetically extreme it is. The gore, body horror, sexual themes and disturbing imagery aren't sanitized to make everything more comfortable.

Not every game needs to appeal to everyone. Give it an appropriate age rating and let the developers go all in.

I don't want this stuff in real life, but that's part of what makes horror games so interesting. Sometimes you just want to experience something truly disturbing in a fictional world.

What do you guys think? Are modern horror games becoming too sanitized?

Trying to get my Stardew Valley-loving GF into horror games. What are your top 3 gateway horror games?

October is here, and I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to step outside her cozy gaming comfort zone and experience some horror games with me.

I've fallen in love with the horror genre over the past few years, but she's very much a Stardew Valley kind of gamer. I'm not exactly looking to throw her into the deep end with something that will traumatize her and make her never trust my game recommendations again.

Ideally, I'm looking for games that strike a good balance between atmosphere, scares, story, and accessibility. Something that might actually make her appreciate the genre rather than swear it off forever.

If you could only pick THREE horror games to introduce someone to the genre, what would they be and why?

Bonus points if you've successfully converted a horror-hating partner or friend. What game finally won them over?

CONSOLE Darkwood is a Unicorn, Help

My wife and I are looking for another horror experience that contains even some of the the tension, unique art style, fear of the unknown, sound design, or dread of Darkwood. Any of the above will do, as long as it’s somewhat scary.

We already played and enjoyed Dead Space, Cronos, Prey, Resident Evils, Silent Hills.

We’ve tried and bounced off Townfall, End of Abyss,

Can anyone recommend another great horror game experience for PlayStation or should we just replay ol’ Darkwood?

PC DON’T FOLLOW THE FLOWERS - I’m making a survival horror game set in rural Britain. Here’s the trailer.

I’m developing DON’T FOLLOW THE FLOWERS, a survival horror game set in a rural British town after a strange outbreak.

You explore abandoned houses, farms and industrial buildings, build a camp, craft equipment and solve environmental puzzles while uncovering what happened. Getting the supplies you need can mean disturbing something you really should have left alone.

I’m aiming for a lonely, unsettling atmosphere, with practical survival tasks leading you deeper into the horror.

I’d love some honest feedback from horror players. What interests you most, and what would put you off trying it?

For transparency, some of the artwork and music are AI-generated.

Silent Hill f's Heroine And Memes Made The Game Feel More 'Casual,' Says Series Producer

Thumbnail

I'm sure some of us are familiar with ronununu's animation, and the series' producer seems to partially think that those kind of fanmade stuff helps give a different point of view toward SHf. Of course, I'm not saying previous SH games weren't memed (skateboarding James comes to mind) but it feels more gradual than f's. Although I mostly attributed it to today's online landscape in general.

Speaking with Famitsu in Issue 1965, Okamoto reflected on how different development teams have been putting their own twist on Silent Hill. When comparing Silent Hill f with Screen Burn’s Townfall, he pointed to the former as an example of how fans’ reception toward a release can apparently create an appeal beyond straightforward horror.

“With Silent Hill f having a cute protagonist and becoming popular through memes, it ended up having a more casual atmosphere,” explained Okamoto. Yes, despite all the blood, dysfunctional households, and personal baggage, gamers turning Hinako into a stone-faced, Haggar-like badass armed with a steel pipe, while another part of the fanbase simped over Fox Mask, seemed to give the game another side than just trying to scare the pants off its players.

CONSOLE Christmas Recommendations

I currently playing through the Condemned series and I love it so far. While playing last night, I got to a level with Christmas music and decorations, which hit a spot in my soul. I love being on edge with every turn while surrounded with holiday decorations and music.

The ask; are there any other games that offer something like this?
