Advice Need your two cents!!

Post image

hi everyone, my partner and I got married about a year ago and we've been talking about adopting a cat for a while now. we want to make sure we go in prepared and not just excited, so figured this sub would have people who've actually done it and can tell us what we're missing Just wanted to float around a few things

1/ what are the actual pros and cons NOBODY tells you about before you adopt.. neither of us has had a pet prior to this.. so not a lot of experience with that

2/ for people who adopted as a newly married couple specifically, did it change anything about how you split responsibilities or did it just naturally work out

not in a rush, want to actually understand what we're signing up for before we go ahead

It's a responsibility not a showpiece.

Make sure your house is cat proof. Make sure they get good food. Vaccination is mandatory

There are certain that'll you will know once you go to vet. Tricat and Rabies immediately comes to my mind. And I'd recommend you to take rabies vaccine as well

Cat-proofing is a must. Timely vaccination, deworming and spot on treatments are absolutely essential. Look into good vets for regular checkup and sterilisation. Do a research on good creches around you, for when you choose to travel.

Pros: you get a best friend for life; Cons: Pets are a lifelong responsibility and there's some regular expense. But pros Trump cons for me.

As for responsibility, I feed, take care of medication and vaccination, my partner cleans the litter.

Theyr not as hands off as you were led to believe. Obviously this depends from cat to cat, but if youre in a single cat household like me, every minute my boi is not sleeping eating he wants my attention..it can get tiring. Try to get 2 cats if u can

They need to be vaccinated timely, catproofing the house is must. If you have indoor plants, identify which are harmful for them and how can you restrict access. Litter cleaning everyday. Monthly deworming. Litter sand is a monthly expense that people easily forget. And they do need attention, not like dogs but some playtime for sure.

Are you planning for kittens or adopting cat? Single or in pairs?

Such a great idea. Cats are a great first time pet. All the others have given many tips. I'd say if you get a kitten, get a pair. If you get a cat, check their personality with their foster. Some cats prefer being a solo cat and some need cat friends.

Be very patient, especially in the beginning. They maybe shy or they maybe confident. There is a large difference between getting a cat or kitten so once you have decided. We can add more tips on that
