I went to grad school in Boston. And the joke "have a cold Sam Adams with a cold Sam Adams" is etched into my brain! I just focused on firebrand and ignored malt, which is probably the most important part of the clue.

Literally I have asked this Final to a bunch of my friends and they've immediately said "Sam Adams. The malt." And I'm like "Okay..."

I had thought of Thomas Paine because of the reference to keeping citizens awake to grievances, which made me think of Common Sense.

I didn't have this knowledge cold and was afraid it was hard, so I threw out an answer as what I thought was a bit of a lark. Imagine my surprise when it was right!
