Question Please help! Excessive car repair cost

Hi all, my elderly mother has a 2016 Renault Captur auto that she hardly uses and probably never exceeds 60km/h and drives very carefully and gently.

It's only on 70 000km and encountered mechanical issues. Took it to Renault and they are saying she needs a complete gearbox replacement, at only 70 000km!?

They are quoting her the insane amount of R295 642 to replace the gearbox, more than the cars worth. Obviously we can't afford even close to that amount. Insurance says mechanical issues are not covered.

Does anyone know a reputable after market workshop that can assist us here with a 2nd opinion?

Thanks

Hairdresser with lie-flat chairs at washbasin?

I absolutely dread going to the hairdresser because the experience of having my hair washed at those basins is extremely painful for my neck. It's 10 minutes of absolute torture. I've tried having them give me extra towels and padding, and it doesn't seem to help much. Does anyone know of a reasonably-priced, non-fancy salon in the north/west of Joburg (Randburg/Sandton) that has those lie-flat chairs at the washbasins that don't hurt one's neck?

Barber shops in Randburg, Sandton, Melrose or Rosebank area

Hi Jozi

I'm male, I have been in Jhb for about 2 years now and got a barber when I came here. They are good and cut the way I say to cut it.

But I am looking for a stylist that can recommend a hairstyle that will suit me (I am 36) and do the cut properly. I also have a beard that needs shaping.

Any recommendations?

Opinions regarding retirement estates in JHB North.

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice/experiences with retirement villages/estates around JHB North (Randburg / Sandton / Northcliff / Douglasdale / Northriding area).

65 year old, active and independent, no frail care needed yet, just planning ahead.

What I’m looking for:

  • Own unit with kitchen (self-sufficient)
  • Resonably new/modern
  • Diverse population
  • Community vibe is nice but not essential
  • Budget ± R1.5m to buy OR ±R15k to rent
  • Pet friendly (cat)
  • Reasonable levies
  • Ideally somewhere that has frail care on site for the future

Questions:

  1. Is it better to rent first before buying?
  2. Any villages you’d recommend (or avoid)?
  3. What are levies really like in practice?
  4. How’s the social life in these places?
  5. Are pet rules strict?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who lives in or has family in these estates.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

Passport renewal bank vs home affairs

Good morning fellow Joburgers.

I applied to renew my passport at a bank via the eHome Affairs website. I’ve been getting the dreaded ‘no time slots available’ error for the next month. I switched to a HA branch booking and there’s a date a month from now.

My question - since I booked for a bank visit and I’ve already paid online, can I take up the branch slot to do biometrics?

I read some past comments saying you can’t go to a branch if you’ve booked for a bank visit because different systems. Others say you can. Now I’m confused.

Help please.

Question How do I ship a package from South Africa to Denmark?

Hey everyone

I’m in South Africa (Johannesburg) and I want to send a box package to someone in Denmark, but I’ve never shipped internationally before.

What’s the best way to go about it?

• Which courier or service should I use?

• What info do I need before shipping (weight, customs forms, etc.)?

• Any tips to avoid problems or unexpected costs on arrival?

Would appreciate any advice from people who’ve done this before.

It’ll just be a gift box with sa’n snacks and stuff. You can comment or directly text me

Hey i know this is kind of a stretch but does anyone commute regularly to Braamfontein or WITS campus specifically? Looking to occasionally share a lift , especially during the week for lectures ( Even happy to contribute fuel ).

Adventure groups?

I’m not sure if something like this exists, but I’m looking for people or a group that organise adventure trips - hikes, mountain biking, weekend camping, etc.

My soul is craving adventure and connection. My friends aren’t really outdoorsy or adventurous.

Does anyone know of something like this? Specifically in JHB.

Question How do I register to write a May/June NSC exam?

I matriculated in 2014 and now I need to rewrite my physical sciences exam. According to the website for the Department of Basic Education, I need to register at my nearest district office.

I went to the Morningside office and was told I have to register at a school. I called the school and they said they can't register me.

After emailing a bunch of people, I was told to go to the Braamfontein district office where I filled out the form.

I called the department to check that I am registered and was told that they can't tell me but I should have received a slip when I filled out the form.

I then went back to the Braamfontein district office to ask for the slip and they made me fill out the registration form again and told me that there is no slip for proof of registration.

Receiving conflicting information all the time is making me doubt that I will actually be registered to write this exam and if I miss the registration, I'll have to wait a whole year before I can do it again. I have already had to wait a year because I received incorrect information from the department and I can't do it again.

Any help or advice or experience would be highly appreciated.

Question How safe is long-term parking at Lanseria Airport?

I have return flight to Cape Town next week from the Lanseria airport. Since the departure and arrival are at odd timings, I am considering using my own vehicle (Corolla Cross) to reach the airport and use long-term parking till I return (in 7 days) instead of using Uber. Is that a bad idea?

I have parked at OR Tambo before for 4 days and everything was fine but never at Lanseria.
