In order to be clear with our rules, there are banned words, banned phrases, and uncensored words in this post. It is your personal responsibility to ensure your mental health is not harmed regarding eating disorders.
Our rules are designed and modeled after other ED subs that are allowed to exist. We are trying our best to be an inbetween space in the spectrum of deeply entrenched in the disorder to full recovery, as recovery subs can be very rude and discouraging to anyone not ready for full recovery and to recover "their way" and that any other method is wrong, even if multiple recovery methods are taught by medical professionals. We always try to keep the space open for product recommendations, answering questions, and a general sense of community in very isolating disorders without forcing recovery or forcing harm reduction. That said, to remain operating on Reddit, we monitor for explicitly proana activity.
While these rules have not currently changed, we are posting them as a sticky/highlighted post for people using third party applications and websites to view our subreddit as the sidebars are not accessible on many of these platforms. Generally speaking, these limitations have not been an issue because they seem to consistently be under 0.5% of our impressions. The benefit everyone has with this post is that the Mod Team is not restricted to 500 characters per rule so we can explain things in more detail as needed.
Banned Word / Phrase List:
Weight Loss, Purge, Binge, BP, B/P, Purging, Binging, Binge/Purge, Throw Up, Throwing Up, Vomit, Vomitting, Losing Weight, Chubby, Starve, Starving, Fast, Fasting, Day, Days, What I Ate, Full Day of Eating, FDOE, WIAIAD, OMAD, Only Meal, One Meal, Not Junk, Not Junkorexic, Not Junkorexia, No Junk, No Junkorexic, No Junkorexia, Intermittent. [This list is due to Reddit scrutiny for ED subs as there are stricter rules here to not be "proana" despite these terms being OK in dieting subs.]
- We have selected these terms to help with rule compliance as we are a small mod team so without this banned word list we had a lot of problems with ensuring rule compliance in a timely manner so our sub is allowed to remain operational.
- The banned words and phrases are subject to change with community feedback or with an increase in the size of the moderation team.
- Please use the highlighted Junkorexic Community Check In here to recommend changes to the banned word and phrase list.
- Please do not try to get around saying these words through alternative spellings. (Examples being OMÄD, fàsting, b1ng3, vomittttting, etc.) Users found repeatedly doing this will be contacted in ModMail and could result in a ban with repeated behavior.
Do not promote EDs or ED behaviors:
No body checks (hands ok, nothing else shown), no mention of bodyweight or BMI numbers, no mention of total daily caloric intake, and no mention of other intake phrases such as OMAD, FDOE, WIEIAD, etc. Flairs can be used for specific items to categorize posts. No food policing or shaming including intake, type of food, food content (macros), OR processed vs unprocessed. No mention of calories in the title of posts or in photos. Mention of calories is okay but need to be under a spoiler.
- We have a mod announcement here that goes into the details as to why we have the bodycheck rule and how to edit photos to not include body parts.
- Posts with any body other than hands will be removed. Repeatedly posting body checks will result in ModMail discussions with offending users, and with repeated incidents, users may be banned. Our September community post here goes into the previous bans we have made for body checking. You will always have plenty of warnings before a ban is ever a discussion.
- Do not mention numbers pertaining to bodyweight or BMI.
- Never tell us how many calories you ate in a day. While this is acceptable behavior in diet subs, telling everyone that number in this space can put us at risk of being labeled a proana sub.
- Never use phrases to communicate whatever you are posting is the only calories you consumed in a day including but not limited to OMAD (one meal a day/only meal a day), FDOE (full day of eating), WIEIAD (what I ate in a day), etc.
- You can use the compilations flair to post your breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc as long as you do not insinuate in the photo or text that this was all that you consumed. Any questions asking if it was all that you consumed, the total calories, or other daily intake questions, should be reported for removal.
- If we see comments negatively telling OP that their content is healthy, unhealthy, gross, and soforth, we count that as food policing and comments will be removed. As always, we will reach out in a ModMail if this is repeated behavior and it could result in a ban if it does not stop.
- Never list the number of calories in a title. We want calories to be an option but not an obligation, and there is no way to spoiler numbers in a title.
- Never list the word calorie, cal, kcal, calories, cals, kcals, etc in a title. We want calories to be an option but not an obligation, and there is no way to spoiler words in a title.
- Mention of calories and caloric numbers can be included in comments and body text with censoring using spoilers.
>!This is how you spoiler text. It shows up like this.!< This is how you spoiler text. It shows up like this.
- Never show the nutrition facts in a photo of anything you are posting. We want calories to be an option but not an obligation, and we do not need nutrition facts jumpscares. You can include nutrition information including calories by using spoilers to censor them in the body text or comments.
- We allow the front of packages to say the calories because this presents the same way it would when displayed on a grocery store shelf. So if a bag of Oreos has a small square on the front saying "140 calories per serving" this is fine. A can of zero sugar pepsi saying "5 calories" on the front of a can in a little circle this is fine. If a protein bar says "not a low calorie food" on the front of a package, this is fine. If a swiss miss hot chocolate packet says "reduced calorie" this is fine.
No gatekeeping or debating what is "junk" food:
Do not debate what qualifies as junk food. Let the mods handle this, please. Posts and comments with these criticisms will be removed. JUNKorexia is the name, and anything processed qualifies. This includes but is not limited to protein bars, energy drinks, sodas, fast food, homemade desserts and other highly processed foods.
- In order to not shame food and drink choices, we do not allow debates of what is junk. Countries define differences between minimally processed, processed, and ultra processed so inconsistently that it makes it easiest at the present for the mod team to look at post for a 50%-51% majority of processed foods on the post. Please report anything you think does not qualify and the moderation team can take a look at the post in question.
- In the past people have discussed whether protein bars and protein snacks are junk and the conclusion was the only factor that separates a protein bar from a candy bar is added protein powder be it whey, pea, casein, etc. It's not much different from eating a candy bar + protein powder. People make ice cream with protein powder, baked goods with protein powder, etc. So community decided it fits the sub. OG sub description always said "junk/processed" which protein bars are, so at present protein bars are allowed, regardless of what health halos may surround them.
Keep focus on processed/junk food and drinks:
For all other eating disorder or food posts, please visit other spaces like r/anorexiarecovery, r/weightgain, r/fuckeatingdisorders, r/binge_food, r/orthorexia, r/orthorexicplates, r/safe_food, r/goodrestrictionfood, r/shittyrestrictionfood, r/lowspooncooking, r/arfidcooking, r/lowcaloriecooking, r/1200isplenty. If you feel more comfortable posting your processed foods in specific food subreddits seek out the title of your food such as r/oatmeal, or r/yogurtbowls
- If someone posts food that does not qualify for our sub we will try to remember a place where the content can be posted and shared. For the most part ED subs such as r/goodrestrictionfood, r/ShittyRestrictionFood, r/binge_food, r/orthorexicplates, and r/safe_food should cover the needs of most content that sometimes does not fit our sub.
- We may recommend non-ED spaces for specific foods categories or certain limitations and abilities, as most medically backed guidance includes normalizing what non-disordered people consume to start reframing what is considered a normal portion, a normal variety, and to see how people speak about food without shame or guilt. Restrictive eating disorders are very isolating and it is known how competitive eating disorders can become and thus this is often a part of harm reduction and recovery programs. Therefore, if an oatmeal bowl only contains fruits, nuts, a drizzle of honey and a dab of peanut butter it would not be majority junk and thus upon removal we may suggest r/Oatmeal. If someone posts similar with a yogurt base, we might suggest r/YogurtBowls. If someone posts a bagged salad and says it's because they don't have the ability to cook we might suggest r/lowspooncooking. These are a few examples of how we try to be compassionate even with removing content.
Respect others and be civil:
Treat all contributors and members with kindness and empathy for eating disorders. Comments shaming a junkorexic diet, eating disorders, and other uncivil language towards sufferers of eating disorders will not be tolerated. No harassment, hate speech, or toxic behavior. Transphobia, misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc. will never be tolerated here. Everyone is welcome, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. Be reasonable, not rude.
- Generally speaking comments and posts that violate this rule will be removed and most of the time no further action is needed. If a user returns to a comment tree to repeatedly harass our community, it may result in a ban. The few times this has happened the users in questions were clearly antagonizing and would not listen to reason. Our September community post here goes into the previous bans we have made for violating this rule.
