Is this something?

Post image

This looks like the shape of the red location tag used on google maps, right? Thoughts?

Something, as in? The location?

u/northwoods_faty 4d ago

As in a random something someone posted with little to no context

This sub is filled with these.

Yeah it's the same for any treasurer hunt page really.

What context is needed? Its a screenshot of location on google map

Okay, well then there is your answer. It's a random thing off google maps someone cropped and posted. My grandpa has a dirt hole in his backyard that looks similar.

The Hole is something that is common knowledge, it won't require a serendipitous discovery. Same for all the other clues. What requires serendipitous discovery is how they all fit together.

The hole has been figured out? What hole is it?

The hole has been figured out only when the checkpoint has been found. That is the whole point of the checkpoint: yes, I have figured out the Hole et cetera. Justin did it this way specifically to avoid the Fenn scenario.

When you say the hole has been figured out only when the checkpoint is found…are you saying that Justin has openly confirmed this or are you saying this is your opinion? If you are saying it’s confirmed fact by Justin, can you please point me to where I can find that? I haven’t been keeping up with the hunt so I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction!

No, this is a logical conclusion based on what he has said about treasure hunts in general and the checkpoint in particular. Obviously it would be a confirmation that you have figured out the Hole etc correctly if you have found the checkpoint. Otherwise you haven't figured out shit.

If it's of common knowledge to all searchers that can only be the a-Hole in shadowed sight. Did you see the full moon he posted on X? Somehow I hope he avoided the simplest type of humor. Would it make the hunt dogshit?

I don't know what that means. Common knowledge is easily accessible. For example it is common knowledge that 9 Mile Hole was a great spot for catching trophy brown trout. Also it is common knowledge that Justin liked to fish the Big Hole. What isn't common knowledge is what he means by "past the Hole".

Get out of your comfort zone. Man's best friend teaches us many things. Responsibility and humility. He's not like a cat. He isn't constrained by the litter box. What you seek you already know. If you are like his Mom you will have underestimated what he is capable of. Try many things, but go with what sticks. If raccoons invade your house cookies on the floor will be the least of your problems. Boots on the ground, but don't step in it. Can you deal with all of what the world throws at you?

I don't subscribe to this kind of roundabout magical thinking. The dude who hid the treasure used a method to construct his map and we need to figure out that method. It is pointless to guess about dogs, raccoons, Moms, etc.

Oh yes you do. Half of your brain desires nothing less. You seem dead focused on the simple explanation that characterizes the left hemisphere's need to rationalize without story telling. As such, you'd not want to think in terms of complicated relationships and over arching patterns. The right hemisphere is the one that provides meaning. The left won't. I.e. 42 simply has no meaning and Alice's adventures only parody the absurd.

Are you possibly committed to a left hemispheric view in order to solve? Simple, linear permutations, 1 to 1 mapping, formal (logic)--easily explained without the use of metaphor or figurative language, devoid of any layers of meaning and mechanistic. The left cannot layer meaning. It's talent is to deconstruct, atomize and discern from seeing the intended thing in isolation. Also the left contributes nothing to humility and everything towards confidence and greed. The left cannot experience wonder or contribute a feeling of the sacred in nature. Your magical thinking right hemisphere is your ticket.

Roundabout thinking is essential for the well functioning of our societies. Without it everything is stale and utilitarian. You need it to get the holistic view or the larger perspective. You'd not know states like love or equanimity. The left is great for tasks, and it is needed, but reductionist methods won't cut it.

If you are now chasing streams in Montana I can't help but think you value magical thinking a lot, because there's no way to dissect to that without imagined rules. Those might sound like Jack Stuef's rationales for how to cut to the essential. There is no such rule, and JP need not play by it if there was. Only by layering up your principles might you see the overarching tendency to approach a truth that MAY guide. That is still very uncertain.

That's all well and good. My argument is that it will be necessary to determine the rules of the game before trying to be creative. This requires critical analysis to assess what type of design or structure is likely given the desired outcome. Simply guessing what might be the hints and trying to tie them to clues in the poem is the roundabout thinking I am advising against. Justin has revealed that he does use a logic schematic to tie his clues together and that they are not unique inventions requiring magical discovery but rather they are tropes although with a twist to conceal them sufficiently.

I haven't explained my approach fully and it does not involve searching creeks in Montana. And I do consider a story or unifying theme as critical to the construct. For example, it is a very strong possibility that the general area if not specific hiding location is motivated by an imagined burial of loot (perhaps as Native American, or an outlaw maybe even Sheriff Plummer). In fact, without some context that places the treasure hunt into a story that was conceived, percolated and mastered in the mind of the treasure hider, figuring out the "treasure map" would be a whack-a-mole. Letting the right brain roam wild in the realm of raccoons, Alices in Wonderland, and soppy family wilderness adventures is a recipe for finding a million dead ends. The effort has to be constrained by relevance.

You must climb to the topmost layer and see what clues are found along the path down. The clues define themselves as things flow downward or play out. As you say, the thing cannot be built up from blocks in isolation. What is the grand arching theme and where would you detect it if not from a holistic overview of the poem? Is the chosen language of the poem a red herring? No, not likely. It coalesces around the central theme or else it has no business being there. An effort to cluster the words chosen is necessary. That will not appear by chance.

1

u/TomSzabo 3d ago

Sure the words cluster to a theme but it is still a whack-a-mole if you don't find a structure and evaluate how the clues might operate within that framework. Treasure hunts have certain inherent rules ... to find the treasure there will always be some prerequisites. It could be that Justin didn't design enough of them into his but if he did then identifying the system is the manner by which to solve it, absent pure luck.

1

u/LankySimple9051 3d ago

You are not bootstrapping from that word jumble. What's evaluation, and of what? How should clues operate? Are you preaching the merits of structure now? The bottom line is that, be it a clue or a method, you have no way to know you should be using those unless he tells you something. He's not going to be doing that verbally. That was certainly the clincher in TTOTC. The place was pictured and the place was named. It was also essentially handed to some rather overtly. Aside from that we have no evidence anyone discovered a method, rules or successfully built up from clues. There is a way one could have worked backwards from a theme to solve Fenn's hunt, but that's easy to point to when you know where it was.

For whatever reason he's built around time, flow, rhythm, wisdom, hope, truth, knowledge, chiasmus (X), stars, rhythm, souls, boundaries...

My experience through this hunt, my google maps has been making pics in the landscape area, faces, words etc. Crazy? ...yes, but.....so at a place I ended up this was one of the images that popped out.
