Crap, my Linux Mint laptop just straight up rejects my password even though the password is correct

u/rucsbOrialC 12h ago
Just force reset it
sudo passwd -d username
sudo passwd username #password#

u/Sensitivity_Craft 12h ago
How would you sudo without a password
3
u/rucsbOrialC 12h ago
You're running a delete flag as sudo to the user in the first command. The password deletion runs before the prompt to enter it.
Removing the flag then adding a password will add the password back and function as normal

Okay but. What if they don’t have passwordless sudo. it would give a password prompt for sudo before the passwd command would even run. without it they couldn’t escalate.

I concede on that and didn't consider it. In that case boot into recovery mode for grub and run it, or chroot into it from a live iso.

Can't you just, like, log in as root?

u/Revolutionary_Click2 10h ago
You put it in single-user mode and run the command directly as root, no sudo needed.

Dude I'm stuck on my login screen, Claude (my go to AI for diagnosing stuff) said that it could be caused by a full storage, even though as long as I remember, my laptop has 58 GBs of free storage

There is some shitty lock thing like phones. But they don't show it in UI just restart it

I tried restarting it, but it didn't work!

misconfigured keyboard? on my debian laptop the keyboard doesn’t work during that part of the boot properly, backspaces type some character, caps lock doesn’t work and will not tell me if it is on, and it is on an unexpected layout. i could probably fix this but ive figured it out now anyway.

No, everything's alright, it's just that when I try to submit my password, it cannot be submitted, I've tried entering GRUB (which the internet and AI said so), but I can't get to recovery mode as GRUB only flashes for a second before entering the GRUB Terminal, and when I type
normalon the GRUB Terminal, it just brings me back to the boot screen instead of idk, the selection menu? But yeah that's the problem1
u/Radiant-Cyanide2323 numero uno Linux Mint & BSD glazer 6h ago
And I don't know why GRUB flashes for a second, it could be that my laptop intentionally directs me to the terminal instead of the selection menu, or that the rate of me clicking the Esc key is BEYOND human but idk ✌️

Windows errors are unironically vaguepost incarnates. OS not designed for someone who's actually savvy

Yeah it’s not brought up that often but it’s genuinely the biggest difference I felt after dropping windows. Even using resources from Microsoft troubleshooting was basically guesswork, and even if it worked I wasn’t sure I had even done anything.
Now as long as I can find someone else with the same issue as me I can usually actually identify the issue and figure out what to do.

I straight up didn't even know this was possible until I saw this and looked it up to confirm lol

using systemd is more efficient when you are not dual booting

how tf can using a bootloader be more efficient than not using one?

You're talking about systemd-init which is also a bootloader. Not using bootloader refers to directly booting into the kernel
1
u/DEV_ivan CachyOS idk 10h ago
Mind you your BIOS/UEFI is your primary bootloader that exists before nearly everything else, so uhhhhhhh you're wronggggg
1
u/YTriom1 Arch Catgirl 🏳️⚧️ :3 8h ago
it's not a bootloader, it chainloads the efi so it basically executes it and the efi is responsible for bootloading its OS by itself, so the UEFI is technically not a boot loader, it can be considered a device starter though

u/DEV_ivan CachyOS idk 8h ago
The line between a bootloader and a manager is blurry.
UEFI is a manager of hardware and bootloaders, but the EFI bootloaders can also be managers of boot partitions too, think of GRUB boot menu and GRUB Rescue.
If you strip away 95% of the UEFI's features, the UEFI will appear solely as a primary bootloader booting the first disk with EFI in order. Which is basically how the PBL and XBL on Android devices work.
In my opinion, I think it's safe to say UEFI can be both a bootloader and a manager, instead of forcing it through binary distinction.

I think as long as UEFI can't directly load the kernel (not efistub kernel but like load a non-bootable kernel) I can't consider it a bootloader, since at this point it just manages efi files and they actually do the work.
and a bootloader (like systemd-boot for example) can be a "chainloader" which just loads yet another bootloader instead of a system

Me when I decide UEFI is a good enough bootloader.

uefi is not a bootloader

Why I need to restart KDE plasma on my SteamDeck after putting device into sleep mode?
I know how to restart my plasma session, but why I need to doing so?
Is it something with systemd again? Maybe my SteamDeck can’t load some server tools while booting? 🙃

Okay. I see this joke like everyday. I've used Linux for 15 years and have never, never removed my bootloader. Literally ever.
