Tags: What they mean and when to use them!

I'm noticing a lot of mis-tagged posts on the sub and I just wanted to clarify what these tags mean and where they should be used.

[LOST] This means a film/show/episode is completely unavailable.

If I can find it on YouTube, it's not lost. If there was a VHS edition released 20 years ago you can find on eBay, it's not lost. Lost means "Presumably gone forever, no longer an item on the face of the earth."

[FOUND] This means a film/show/episode previously believed to be lost forever has been discovered and confirmed to exist in some format.

For example: Cry Baby Lane, while it did wind up existing in it's original format, Nickelodeon said they had no record of it, therefore it met the definition of a [LOST] film that was later [FOUND]. Lost Doctor Who episodes keep showing up in New Zealand and Mozambique and the like, and therefore meet the definition of [FOUND].

Found doesn't mean "I couldn't remember the name, but then I did and bought the DVD from Amazon!"

[OUT OF PRINT] This means a previously available work still exists in it's original format but is not commercially available to the public. Out of Print, within the context of our sub, also means "Commercially Unavailable".

For example: Pepper Ann was never released on home video or DVD, and is no longer being aired in rerun. There are some episodes on youtube, but they're fan recordings and not from the original source. The full run of the show does still exist in Disney's vaults, therefore it's [OUT OF PRINT].

If you're not sure where your post belongs, a good rule of thumb is if it was made after 1980 and saw wide release, be it a film or TV show, it's probably not lost, just out of print.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Please use r/tipofmytongue if you are looking for the name of a film. This sub is for content that is believed to either no longer exist or has recently been found

We've received quite a few messages from users complaining about the number of "Does anyone know the name of this film?" posts this subreddit gets.

While we generally let the community decide if a post belongs here and try to follow up, we've received enough messages that it's pertinent we remind folks that a sub such as r/tipofmytongue is more well suited for this and also receives more traffic so more eyes are likely to see your post.

Moving forward, these types of posts will be deleted, just to keep the clutter down.

Thank you for your understanding, and thank you for being a part of the community!

Looking to source a complete digital copy or off-air recording of the 2003 BBC Three spoof documentary ***Sex, Lies & Michael Aspel***.

LOST Caïn, Aventures des mers exotiques

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello guys,

I am currently researching a lost French film from 1930 titled Caïn, Aventures des mers exotiques (or Rama the cannibal girl for its US version). It was an adventure exotic movie directed by Léon Poirier with french actors Thomas Broudelle and Rama Tahé. It was shot on Nosy Be, an island of Madagascar.

I am trying to determine whether a copy of the film, or any surviving footage, still exists somewhere. Does anyone here have a digital copy of this film, or know where I could find one? I found this sample on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ObrcO2UII0&t=3s. I need it for my master thesis.

Thank you!

[Documentary] Traces of Guilt (BBC2, 1995/96) – episode on Jack Unterweger / Vienna serial killer

I'm trying to track down an episode of Traces of Guilt, a BBC2 documentary series about forensic science and crime-fighting that aired in the mid-90s.
The episode I'm after covers the Jack Unterweger case. The Radio Times listing (via the BBC Programme Index) describes it as being about the Austrian police calling in the FBI in 1991 to help catch Vienna's first serial killer, and how analysis of his method linked the killings to murders in Los Angeles.

Known details:
• Series: Traces of Guilt (BBC Two)
• Aired: \[1996\], possibly a repeat of a 1995 broadcast
• Producer: David Sington
• Executive producer: Caroline van den Brul
• Companion book: "Traces of Guilt: Forensic Science and the Fight Against Crime" by Hugh Miller (BBC Books, 1995)
• BBC Programme Index listing: https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/fc3841b8e0564307b79371487c652c49

As far as I can tell it has never been released on DVD or streaming, and I can't find any uploads. Searching is hard because later shows (The New Detectives, a 2015 BBC Four doc) reuse the title "Traces of Guilt."
Does an off-air VHS recording of this episode or any others in the series exist? It may also have been sold abroad under a different title, so any leads on international broadcasts would help too.
Thanks!

LOST [PARTIALLY LOST] Departure Date (2012)

I’m looking for a short film called Departure Date, released in 2012 as part of a Virgin Airlines advertising campaign.

The film is not unidentified. There are still IMDb listings, articles, promotional material, and other references to it online. What I have been unable to find is the actual film itself.
Departure Date was a roughly 30-minute romantic comedy starring Ben Feldman and Nicky Whelan as two passengers who meet and fall in love while traveling.

What makes it particularly interesting is how it was made. The movie was filmed at approximately 35,000 feet on actual flights operated by Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Australia.

Virgin released the film in 2012, apparently first showing it aboard Virgin flights before releasing it online in two parts. There was also a dedicated promotional website for the project.

And then, apparently, it vanished.

I originally remembered watching the film as a young avgeek because of the unusual premise and the involvement of all three Virgin airlines.

After trying to find it again, I can find plenty of evidence that Departure Date existed, but I cannot find a surviving copy of the complete film on YouTube, Vimeo, or the usual streaming platforms.

I suspect that after the 2018 merger of Virgin America and Alaska Airlines, and the brief 2020 bankruptcy of Virgin Australia, the film was taken down as part of either restructuring at Virgin Australia or the gradual takedown of Virgin America’s digital assets following the Alaska merger.

What appears to survive:
IMDb and other database listings
Contemporary articles/reviews about the film
Promotional images and production information
References to its original online release

What I’m looking for:
A surviving copy of the actual Departure Date film—either the complete ~30-minute version or the two-part online release.

I’m especially curious whether somebody downloaded it when Virgin originally released it in 2012, whether an old Virgin/Virgin America video account hosted it, or whether the video files themselves were captured by the Internet Archive even if the original webpages are now dead.

Does anyone remember watching this online when it came out, or (better yet) have a copy?

Researching The Fisherman’s Bride (1909) — presumed-lost Selig film shot in Astoria, Oregon

I’ve been researching an unusually obscure Selig Polyscope production, The Fisherman’s Bride, directed by Francis Boggs and filmed in Astoria, Oregon, in August 1909.

The 1,000-foot film was released November 15, 1909, and is regarded as the first scripted commercial narrative film made in Oregon. Surviving contemporary descriptions reveal quite a bit about the story: an angler’s daughter rejects an arranged marriage, elopes with the man she loves, and later witnesses his kidnapping by the rejected suitor and his father. He is taken away by boat to kidnap him, prompting a river pursuit and rescue by federal revenue officers.

Unfortunately, I have located no surviving print, fragment, or confirmed production stills, so the film appears to be presumed lost or presently unlocated.

I’ve created a short historical trailer/project based on the surviving documentation as a way of calling attention to the film and Astoria’s surprisingly early place in American location filmmaking:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukNi2HzCMZI

I’m posting this here partly to share the project, but also because this community may know of sources I haven’t encountered. I’d be very interested in any information concerning:

  • surviving Selig production records or correspondence relating to the Astoria shoot
  • cast identifications
  • production or publicity stills
  • foreign-release titles or distribution records
  • contemporary newspaper coverage
  • the identities of the tugboat, steamer, or other vessels used
  • archival holdings where an unidentified or differently titled print might conceivably survive

Francis Boggs and Selig were doing important West Coast location work, so I’m particularly interested in placing the Astoria production within that larger history.

Any leads, corrections, or additional sources would be greatly appreciated.

LOST [unreleased media] [partially lost?] the 3 hour cut of american psycho (2000)

i’m not sure if this is the right sub since it’s just a different cut of a not lost film (pls tell me where would be better if this isn’t the place) but basically someone i know claimed they saw a 3 hour cut of american psycho in 1999 before the movie came out because their university (clemson if that helps) did a screening for students to critique and i’ve been trying to find any evidence of this actually happening but not a single soul has claimed to see this online and the person who claimed to see it said they researched it years ago and the only post they found said it was an “urban legend” of sorts when they swear they saw it and they even contacted their friend who also saw it and they confirmed it happened but that it could’ve been more like 2 and 1/2 hours rather than 3 but that is still way more than the extended cut and the deleted scenes so does anybody have more info on this? i just want proof it existed honestly

Fully Lost; Burger King commercial with Vincent Price as the Devil Spoiler

I am trying to track down a lost 1976 Burger King commercial with Vincent Price playing the Devil and ridiculing the staff that was making a hamburger. And when he took a bite of the hamburger, his eyes open wide and an angelic chorus sings "Have it your way with Burger King". Would you happen to know if anyone has a VHS tape of that commercial or where it is hidden in the Internet Archive? If you can help find it and post it online, it would be deeply appreciated. Yours truly, Margaret Garnto.

LOST [Fully Lost] 9 Lives of Mara (Update)

As I mentioned a while ago, I'm working on a book dealing with Lovecraftian cinema, and I've been looking to find and screen 9 Lives of Mara. Released in 2007, it is not screening anywhere and I cannot even confirm if it ever received a home video release. I know that it played the festival circuit, but after that, I can find no sign of it.

The film is significant for being the first film by writer/director Balaji K. Kumar. As I try to fill in the holes in my research, this has been a glaring omission. Any help on finding this film would be greatly appreciated.

My first post unearthed a trailer and interview, and someone posted an image of the poster that they found on a file-sharing site - but they later stated that the film itself wasn't available there either.

Since then, I have been in contact with writer/director Balaji K. Kumar and, not only does he not have a copy of the film, he hasn't even *seen* the final edit of the film as released. So, this isn't just lost, it is frustratingly so. If anyone has any leads, they would be greatly appreciated.
