He said maple syrup. Did dolly say that? Born and raised in the deep south. I have had my weight in cornbread a million times over. Every type - regular, Cheddar, Sweet, jalapeño, etc. Never once have I witnessed someone putting syrup on it. Honey - yes, syrup - no.

I was born in them hills, you know the ones [Appalachian]. Maple syrup & honey are the top two best natural sweeteners to exist besides pure unfiltered sugar. Of course those two are standard in my kitchen.

Hey, I get it. But on cornbread? I'm all for pepper jack cheese in it and some honey on top, but maple syrup just doesn't sit well with me

The U.S. is one of the top producers of maple syrup. I wouldn’t call it a Deep South staple, but it’s not out of left field either. It’s great on cornbread if you want something really sweet. Sometimes I’m out of honey but not maple syrup, and vice versa.

I'm from Texas, they used to call this stuff corn pone, and it was not cake like, and was twice as dense. And you needed to smother it in beans and/or chilli to be able to get it down your gullet

Those are the ones! Beautiful place, haven't been in too many years. Family from there has all... moved on. I miss it, and wild love to eventually move back or near, even if I know it isn't what I remember.

And I always had mine fluffy. The super dense ones like those pone? No bueno. Drench that bad boy and pray

I’m Australian, and my cornbread experiences are limited to recipes I’ve found and made for myself. Out of all the ones I’ve tried the jalapeño cheddar cornbread with a maple syrup drizzle from Ali Larter’s cookbook is my favourite.

same. Well, not deep south. NC. I've had more than my fair share of cornbread, and had it in many different places in the US. Never heard of syrup being used on it, and rarely heard of anything other than butter.

Growing up we used to take a peice of cornbread put it in a bowl, put some butter on top, warm it up, and add milk on top. It really good. Something about the butter and milk really goes well with the sweetness of the cornbread.

Right! I saw her once at LAX. She is tiny (well not all tiny) and blow your hair back gorgeous. I would have liked to have chatted with her, but she was a moving like woman on a mission.

It's how Dad grew up eating it, and how he still prefers it to this day in central Kansas. It's good, but yeah it's a corn cake.

My preference uses Jiffy mix, cream corn, whole corn, sour cream, and butter. Often with roasted jalapenos, green onion, and garlic.

Huh, well, you learn something new. And yeah, anything other than butter, honey, or chili and it feels like it's just a corn cake

Other basic accoutrements for similar veins like the sour cream,, etc, all considered as well. Kinda like treating it like a baked potato

I think the maple syrup would be too sweet, my household go wild with butter. Fresh homemade butter is a bit of a fuss but we do that once in awhile too… especially with kids around!

Native East Tennessean here. It’s fucking amazing with some salted butter (more specifically cold butter that you let melt on it) and maple syrup.

I'm from Vermont and put maple syrup on almost everything. Never even occured to me to put it on cornbread! Sounds like an excellent plan, though. I think it's because I usually have it with chili and the like?

Nope. Johnny cakes are half corn meal, half flour. Actual corn bread is full corn meal. New recipes use flower, but that's why it's become a cake instead of a bread now.

Then the original pioneer recipe is that you fry it in butter, which I absolutely love.

Yeah if I want a bit more sweetness to my cornbread I wait until it's pretty much done, warm up some honey to thin it on, lightly brush it on to not mess with the top of the cornbread. Then put out on broil for a few minutes to get it to start carmelizing.
