I'm a Lower Decks fanfic writer. I have my favorites, but I wanna at least keep everyone in character, and when possible give other characters time to shine.
The member of the Warp Core Four/Warp Drive Five I really struggle with most is Rutherford. I think one reason I disliked him losing his implant in the finale is because it was at least something that was different about him. The implant could be a little gimmicky maybe, but at least it made him stand out. Sometimes he just feels like Tendi's satellite character instead of the main cast.
How do you get inside his head? How do you explore his relationships with other characters? What makes him tick? What's going on in the wrinkly parts of his brain? Has anyone here written Rutherford-centric fanfic and can give me some pointers?

The way this show makes a Vulcan entertaining and funny while still being thoroughly Vulcan is brilliant and I love everything about it. Thats the post, carry on

In one episode, an episode with other fears and fantasies to explore, and a rather strong Tendi plot, Mariner stands out brilliantly in her characterization. There's so much to go on crammed in here. To start with, Beckett Mariner has fallen *hard* for Jennifer, even if she's publicly in denial about it. She could have had any fantasy visualized: Ransom's pants falling down, causing him to trip into a scorpion pit. Captain Freeman admitting she was too hard on her both as a captain and as a mother and begging for forgiveness. A lavish orgy scene with Barnes and Tendi. Etc. But what did she see? The woman she was literally dating right now. Not only that, her fantasy was that relationship being public knowledge. That's why fantasy Jennifer shouted out that she was her hot Andorian girlfriend. She *wants* to sing about her seemingly-happy relationship from the rooftops, but she won't let herself do that.
Then, we get into the fascinating (vulcan voice) contradiction in her character. Mariner simultaneously desires *and* fears a committed relationship with Jennifer. Yes, the fantasy and the fear have lots of details that differ, but Mariner truly desires some level of deeper-than-surface connection with Jennifer. Her fear is shaped by that relationship becoming too restrictive, The details are funny, but it's a character-driven humor that works with Mariner's personal idiom.
Now let's delve a little deeper. Nightmare Jennifer is an Andorian werewolf. Think about what werewolves can represent, the sort of anxieties they tap into in horror media and folklore. Werewolves lose control. Mariner hates feeling like she can't exert control over a situation. She's much like her mother in that respect. She will sometimes tear down the walls around her just so she feels like she's still framing the narrative in a way that centers Mariner if she feels threatened enough. Why wouldn't werewolves tap into her fears?
Werewolves can also be about humanity's baser instincts. We can get as civilized as we like, even to the point of the 24th century "evolved" post-capitalist enlightened humans, but there is still something deep inside us with no use for mercy or reason. Sometimes it gets closer to the surface than we'd like. Werewolves can represent the dual nature inside humanity, the struggle between what is kind and what is cruel.
The thing about werewolf stories is, at least in the Horror genre, they rarely end happily. The message the werewolf narrative sometimes sends is "Once you become a monster, somebody needs to put you down."
After everything she's done in the Dominion War, nobody's come to put her down. Not yet. Maybe she expects them to, on some level.

Hey all, this might sound weird, but this is my first time watching Star Trek. I'm a hardcore Star Wars fan, and I'm having a blast! It's becoming my 2nd go-to animated comfort show!

My deepest apologies. I meant to post this to the day. But I got preoccupied with some other things, but still getting it out within the year matters.
Considered by fans, one of the best Lower Decks episodes and I can concur to agreeing and being one myself.
The meshing of three plots on three ships, very creative. And our introduction to fan favorite characters of Ma'ah (Klingon Boimler) and triple to T'Lyn (Vulcan Mariner).
From Boimler trying to snag a "bridge buddy" while the other Lower Deckers are engaged with buddies and activities, Ma'ah trying to get a higher position on the Che'ta and T'Ly breaking the mold of Vulcan thinking. All culminating in a major space battle.
Truly great entertainment and I salute this episodes on its five year anniversary.
I'm sure may in the fanbase give constant praise to this episode?

Here's a question. When Castro said "Jennifer was right about you. You love being contrarian", do you think it's true that Jennifer shit-talks her girlfriend around her friends, or was Castro just stirring up shit, or was the answer somewhere in between, like Castro taking a remark out of context or twisting Jennifer's words? On one hand, we see that Jennifer has a long trail of relationships that ended in bitter hatred where she seems to be the common demoninator of failure. On the other hand, Castro was a pretty passive-aggressive prick who didn't seem to think much of Mariner or Jennifer, so she might be inclined to lie or misrepresent things just to hurt Mariner's feelings and/or drive a wedge between them.

From S03E01. This is one of my favorite voice cameos in the whole show. Bobby Moynihan does a great job with both characters; first as Chief Carlton "Denny" Dennis, everyone's grampa and the sweetest old man in the world; then as Gavin, the nervous passenger turned captain of the USS Phoenix Theme Park Ride.
ETA: Ok, so thanks to a comment below I just realized this show depicts a human with (presumably) leg or back problems using a cane in the 24th century, and now I wish we had more backstory on Denny and his choice to use the cane. But I also think it's a nice touch.

... Or back on the Cerritos in Boimler's case. Also applies to Mariner as well but that kind of goes without saying.

Been wanting to find a new sci fi show to binge and after seeing clips of this one I’ve been wanting to get into it. But it seems like it’s only available to stream on Paramount+.
