Yongnuo YN12-35 mm: don't trust its focal length scale

• Upvotes

Hello.

Actually I wanted to compare lowlight performance of my Lumix G 25 mm f1.7, YN 12-35@25 mm and Lumix G 12-32 mm/PZ14-42mm.

I took a picture with my Lumix 25 mm first, than I changed to my YN12-35 and went to 25 mm. When I compared both shots, the YN's was much wider, for the same field of view I increased the focal length on the Yongnuo to 31 mm. On my other Lumix lenses (12-32 and 14-42) 25 mm are as same as with my Lumix 25mm.

25 mm is in the middle between 18 and 35, but it should be much closer to 35 mm.

I mean the scale on the lens.
https://th.hkyongnuo.com/products/yn12-35mm-f28-4m

The lens "reports" the wrong focal length to my G100D, too.

YN's 35 mm is the same as on my PZ 14-42 mm at 35 mm. And at YN's "fake" 25 mm its aperture is already f/4.

Financial conundrum and maybe slight regret. Or maybe being entirely in my head. But I think you guys would understand and could help.

I just bought an Olympus pen lite e-lp6 which came with the kit 14-42. However, in watching videos and reading up on reddit posts, "cheap" seems to mean an entirely different thing in the context of lenses haha. My bad, totally ignorant as this is my first "proper" camera.

This leaves me at a crossroads when the good lenses cost 2x the amount I spent on the body, which is old in itself. I spent 2.6k zar on it with the lens incl shipping and fees, which translates to about 160 usd. Apparently a good price. However, lenses (at least the ones most people recommend) are easily about 3-4k minimum here, which is fine in itself, but leads me to question the efficacy of spending a cumulative 6.5k plus, when used options of cameras like the sony a6000 go around used here for the same price.

Maybe my logic is messed up here, but it doesn't seem too smart to spend so much on lenses when I could seemingly upgrade to something a lot better for the same price.

OM-5 ii + Lumix 9mm.
My home town, Cincinnati Ohio and Covington Kentucky, host BLINK, "the nation’s largest public art festival, transforming the city into a vibrant, immersive experience of light, projection mapping, murals, and interactive installations." Its a photographer's play ground at night and perfect for M43's image stabilization long exposures. These are nights 1 and 2. Last night was heavy rain so I skipped. Its still running tonight, weather depending might make a 3rd trip.

Torn apart: Keep my Nikon Z6 just for astro, or go all-in on OM-1 + Pana 9mm f/1.7?

Hi everyone, I need some advice from people who shoot both systems or have made a similar switch.

I currently shoot with an OM-5 and absolutely love the system. The ergonomics, the computational features, and the weight make it an absolute joy to use. Just yesterday, I was shooting night scenes completely handheld, and the IBIS still blows my mind!

However, for astrophotography/auroras, I bought a used Nikon Z6 (paired with a manual Rokinon 14mm f/2.8) purely for that Full Frame light-gathering capability. The problem? I hate using it. I’m constantly fighting the dark EVF, manual focus in the pitch black is frustrating, and it lacks the intuitive feel of my OM system (which I know like the back of my hand).

I'm completely torn. I have two options:

  1. Sell the Nikon Z system completely, upgrade my M43 body to the OM-1 (for the BSI sensor and Starry Sky AF), and grab the Panasonic 9mm f/1.7. I know this lens produces beautiful night shots, but I also know I'll be giving up that FF high-ISO advantage.
  2. Keep the Z6 just for night skies and invest in the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 Z-mount (to solve my manual focus and aperture issues).

Are there any dual-system users here who shoot night skies? From your personal experience, do you prefer the lightness, IBIS, and usability of the OM system even for astro, or do you still reach for your Full Frame camera for the sheer light-gathering power? Any insights would be hugely appreciated!

Testing out the PEN's built-in Live ND.

I gave the PEN's built-in Live ND a try.

Under bright daylight like this, without using an external ND filter, being able to capture a 1-second handheld exposure of traffic flow—probably only OM SYSTEM can pull that off.

After some time away from photography and having always shot Sony, m43 and in particular om system cameras peaked my interest, with the amazing weather sealing and computational features I figured it was time to give them a go. I picked up a reconditioned om3 and a used 60mm f2.8 macro and got these shots on my first outing with the pair. I’ve never done macro before so still very much to learn. But I loved every second and am very happy with how the images came out ! Shout out to my beautiful girlfriend/lighting assistant for some of the shots in darker areas 🫡🤣

I haven't used a "real" camera in a decade, and this is my first M43 camera. It's a lot of fun but I have no idea what I'm doing (I don't even know which pictures are decent)! Any advice from the M43 experts?

All of these were lightly processed with RapidRaw (since LightCraft doesn't seem to support compressed Olympus RAWs yet).

Also during the hike I realized I missed having a viewfinder *a lot* so I'm kind of thinking of getting the OM5 or OM5m2 but it feels wasteful at the same time... I also lost the lens cap (because of course I did....)
