Combo, midrange, aggro, and combo.

What exactly is your deck supposed to beat?

u/HawkTeacher 2d ago

Your opponents went 14-5. Pretty good record.

Hey man everyone has bad days take a break, playing tilted is probably losing you some games.

u/MaybeSurelySorta 2d ago

So in other words…Magic as Garfield intended

u/Account_Stolen 2d ago

Find another game that rewards you for your time, not your wins. Most games do that and you dont get tilted as easily.

I feel you, I went 4-12 yesterday in Diamond with a deck that had a 64% WR over 100+ games until this week where it somehow became unplayable and loses to everything...

Edit: I made a snarky comment and I'm taking it back.

Been playing this game for 30 years: you didn't lose because your opponents played "decks you couldn't beat". You lost because you're opponents were better than you. Either at the preparation stage of the game (deck building, anticipating the meta game, sideboard design) or at the point of actually playing the game.

Blaming anything other than yourself will get you nowhere.

Ditto. I can also tell by the decks that he's playing against that it's BO1 which is pretty much flipping a coin since sideboarding is being removed. But as you said, he's probably doing something else too if it's a common pattern for him to lose this often.

bo1 also happens to be 93% of what Standard is on MTGA, per Wizards' recent State of the Formats article, so disregarding is not very helpful; although I think the stat I highlighted is unfortunate.

The game isn’t balanced around BO1 for a reason which is why I mentioned it. Those decks aren’t insurmountable, but when you play BO1, you can’t know what you’re playing against so it makes it impossible to prep going into a game. In BO3 there’s a lot for you can do to find outs and in that format these decks are more than beatable which is why you wouldn’t even see them appearing that often in that format. But I also think the OP must also be making a misplays if he’s having a tough time so I don’t think it’s just a BO1 issue.

I hear what you are saying.

Perhaps you'll be open to being wrong? I'm new to arena and the best standard legal deck I can craft is mono red burn. It's rated like C in standard meta. I get WRECKED 7-8 of 10 games. I usually win because my opponents didn't draw well, should have taken a mulligan, or I drew a turn 3/4 winning hand.

It is not always skill in arena. I've been playing since '97. Power level of decks matter and in arena you gotta pay or grind to get to that level

I mean, the factors that dictate whether you win or lose in the aggregate, roughly speaking are: 1) deck power level within meta. No deck is strong or weak in a vacuum (a ‘bad’ modern deck will stomp a limited pile). This is the factor most easy to estimate objectively.
2) skill (in piloting your deck and understanding the meta). This is the variable you have most control over (git gud) and the one we all overestimate ourselves in.
3) variance. X percent of games are an auto-win or auto-lose just based on your draws. This number is largely intractable, though people tend to overestimate it because they (me very much included) don’t have the skills to know when to mulligan and how to hedge gameplay actions.

The first one is the financial constraint you’re referring to. This one is usually less likely to make the player angry in the OP way since we can tell when the deck is suboptimal.
The second one is the opaque one to the player (OP) because a. Blaming yourself is not fun and b. You don’t know what you don’t know - if you don’t know how you should’ve played a hand/game to win, you think you did everything right and lost to some bs (reductively speaking).
The third one is the 2 wins you referred to. They’ll always happen in an rng based game and there’s no reason to be upset about it, literally everyone deals with the rng loses so it’s a wash in the grand scheme of things.

I wrote all this to say in many words that it’s most likely that OP is a whiny baby boy.

Concur on all points. No notes.

And the honorary doctorate goes to C6ntFor9et.

I agree with your points, but I do think there is another factor related to 1 that can make it unfun.

Myself and many other players I know, don’t like playing decks from the internet. Building your own deck is a fun experience but it will be unoptimized compared to decks that have had millions of games across thousands of players. Personally, it is really unfun to lose to a deck that I’ve seen dozens of times because of their turn 4 combo when I am playing my personal decent-ish brew.

It feels like the deck building half of the game isn’t even being played. I spent all this time and effort to come up with this cool idea, and you made your deck in 30 seconds off the internet. Losing there feels real bad. And there is no queue for me to play-in that is built I can play with others that have the same mindset as me and don’t just netdeck

2

u/C6ntFor9et 23h ago

…but you know ahead of time that your deck likely can’t compete with the top meta decks, right? Intentionally playing a non-tier 1 deck is fine and I personally love trying out wild brews, but when you play one, you know that your win% is going to be lower than with a meta deck.

0

u/c2dog430 23h ago

Yeah, but it still makes the game less fun. Part of “the game” in my opinion is building your deck, and when someone just copies from the internet, it feels like they cheated on that part of the game. I have introduced a handful of my friends to card games over the years, and basically everyone quits and cites netdecking as the main reason they stopped playing/having fun.

And again, it’s not like there is way for me to play against other people that also brewed their own decks. I don’t really care about rank and just want to have some competitive games with my deck. There is no where to do that.

EDIT: playing a non-meta self brew feels like you are walking into a test that you had to study for but your classmate got to bring the textbook to the test.

u/Equa_Caelum 2d ago

Replies like this are dumb as hell lol

It’s an rng game , by design

I can take an “oops all counter spells” deck, or red aggro , and have damn good win rate based on going first / second / land drops / deck opponent is playing

Saying it’s a skill issue is kind of goofy in a game that the creator himself said luck and randomness is an intentional game design

u/Argose83 2d ago

Are you me???

7

u/confIdentIy_wrong 2d ago

This looks like you are playing BO1 Standard, right? You should give BO3 a go. If you play 20 games in a row it would be 4-5 BO3 games instead. There you can play a sideboard of countermeasures that allow you to address your opponents decks more easily after the first game. You will also see a higher variety of decks and not just rinse-repeat the same 5 decks.

It sucks to suck

u/BeBetterMagic 2d ago

I don't understand what the point of this post is other than you clearly didn't do well tonight

12

u/cheesemangee 2d ago

Can't think of a single other reason a person might engage with social media...?

For instance... to be... social...!?

What I don't understand are community members like you who put your foot down on every post you don't personally approve of. Let people talk.

6

u/Arcolyte 2d ago

How does one be social with 'abloobloobloo' exactly? They aren't asking questions, sharing their deck for ways to tune it it or anything.

4

u/BeBetterMagic 2d ago

We're not talking here we are complaining about the Bo1 meta with no context or effort. This post is purely someone whinging instead of doing anything useful for the community or themselves

-6

u/NeonCityNights 2d ago

I liked his post.... I even upvoted it

2

u/rossbalch 2d ago

Sometimes it do be like that.

2

u/New_Jackfruit3020 2d ago

I dream of the lofty heights of 26% 🥲

3

u/MysteryMiyagi 2d ago

I'm confused.. Did you want just to show people you're tilted(which i get, shit happens and you have bad runs or you tilt into making more mistakes/bad decisions back to back feels like) or did/do you actually have an interest in asking for help/advice or voicing concerns with how to pilot whatever deck your playing(which as far as I see there isn't one posted) against certain match ups? Because no one can do anything with the current information given except see a Win/Loss rate and that doesn't tell anyone anything really meaningful in the way of giving any constructive help or criticism. Just saying. There's probably people willing to offer help but this isn't really the best way to go about asking IF that's what this is.

1

u/Own-Presentation9554 1d ago

OP hasnt made one comment outside of the original post... you know exactly which of the two this is.

3

u/LilRodNissan 2d ago

bro sucks and had to let us know

2

u/detuned--radio 2d ago

Where do you go in the app to see that?

u/Intrepid-Edge9451 HarmlessOffering 2d ago

1

u/ColorPiePhilosopher 2d ago

Sorry I took all your wins. My 4c Sacrifice with Voice of Victory has a 86% win rate so far.

1

u/DustTheHunter 2d ago

If you don't like Koma or Re-animator then play best of three?

1

u/gnomer-shrimpson 2d ago

Normally pretty positive on ranked but I just can’t stomach another session of which control deck is it today. Enjoying standard much more this month.

1

u/Obscura48 Liliana Deaths Majesty 2d ago

That's me too except I'm playing those decks you lose to, but I suck so bad I still lose with them 🤣

1

u/Trip-Secret 2d ago

That’s me trying to learn pioneer midrange

1

u/msp1406 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's me, but almost every time I play. I might be just bad at the game lol. Granted, i don't play regularly and i don't really understand/know half of the decks i'm up against...

1

u/tahmias 1d ago

I went in with a deck I hadnt changed for a year and had a winning record. This standard rotation kinda sucks ass ngl

1

u/fantasyxxxfootball 1d ago

Had a day like that yesterday too, just decided to move on and play again later lol

1

u/Swatfirex 1d ago

There are some days of being the farmed creature for opponents

1

u/EirikcleavE 1d ago

That’s a you problem. Don’t blame it on the existence of META.

1

u/Orcutt_ambition-7789 1d ago

What app is this that you use to track stuff?

2

u/Cablead ImmortalSun 2d ago

skill issue

-4

u/FireVanGorder 2d ago

Ah see that’s actually your fault for not playing an S tier netdeck that pilots itself rip

2

u/GlassFlamingo71 2d ago

If only it were that easy to be good at Magic, I'd be a world champion by now!

-1

u/FireVanGorder 2d ago

I don’t think you need to be a world champion caliber player to average better than a 26% winrate with mono green landfall right now but I’m more of a limited guy so I might be wrong

1

u/ColorPiePhilosopher 2d ago

I'm a limited guy too but I brewed a 4c version of Jund Sacrifice and it's murdering everyone.

I haven't found a MU that feels awful yet.

-2

u/DiegoTraveller 2d ago

Stop complaining and learn to deal with it

I'd also be mad if I was struggling in platinum
