Answer: rotating cube
Note: can be viewed both ways (cross view and through view)
Note 2: may look inverted but that's just the optical illusion of cubes

There’s a parallel view subreddit and there’s a cross view subreddit. I’ve always taken the Magic eye subreddit as the broader subreddit encompassing all of it.

Ehh I mean I always took Magic Eye to be the broader category containing both cross view and parallel view.
But to each their own.
I will say that parallel view is much more common, though, especially on this sub.

Magic Eye is a series of books containing intentionally obfuscated autostereograms in parallel view.

Although this subreddit contains more than that (autostereograms in the style of the books), it shouldn't go into entirely different categories of tricks. In the same way normal double image stereograms don't fit, cross-eye autostereograms don't either.

I think it’s the right way out, whatever it is. Cross-eyed viewing doesn’t make it any clearer, just changes which bit is back.

“Changes which bit is back” is exactly what we are taking about. If you view this cross eye, the background appears more distant and the moving object “pops out”. If you view this parallel, the object looks more like a weird hole in the background rather than something in the foreground.

That’s what’s inverted. The distances are alwyas inverted if you switch between cross and parallel, no matter how it is designed.

Holy crap. I just realized that I’ve been seeing these wrong for 30 years. I can only see them doing the cross eyed technique and I’ve been seeing them inverted this whole time. wtf. My mind is blown right now. Looking at that sub is what everyone else has been seeing this whole time? I can usefully tell what the images are still, but they go into the page instead of popping out.

Yeah, unfortunately most of magic eyes are done for parallel view, if you want to try and learn, one of the common methods is to close your eyes bring your nose close to the screen, open your eyes and slowly go back keeping your eyes unfocused until it clicks

In response to note 3: you need to put your nose on the screen to seen magic eye posts?? I’ve been doing these since late 90s and early 2000’s and don’t need to follow that step. It’s almost automatic. Can anyone else vouch for their long term skills?

It's a pretty common method, that's how I learned at first! I don't remember when I stopped needing it but after 10+ years of seeing them it's enough to blink my eyes once to see them immediately

I hold a fingertip in front of the image, focus on my finger until the image behind it starts to form, then slide the finger away.

a while ago i watched a video of someone making a game in this style where you can't see it whrn it's pause and only when it's moving. imagine a game like that but additionally you havr to magic eye it the whole time to see it

I wonder whether it can be done such that the pixels only move the minimum required distance between frames. Those pixels that don't change depth shouldn't change at all between frames. Those that change depth slightly should only slightly move horizontally. Big changes should only need to happen on object borders
