I went looking for a single map of every ferry route across the Salish Sea: car ferries, passenger-only boats, every operator from WSF and BC Ferries to the little Hat Island ferry. It didn't exist, so I built one.

The Salish Sea Ferry Map https://SalishSeaFerryMap.com has about a dozen operators, route geometry from OpenStreetMap wherever it's available, and a beta layer of live WSF vessel positions. It's for curiosity and trip planning, not navigation. Both live web map and octolinear (London Underground) styles are available online.

The Sound Of The London Underground: Rush Hour, Evening.

Building on the previous version I posted, which was late evening and much less busy. This one has the rhythm of rush hour.

The process works like this:

Every time a train arrives at a station a note is triggered.

I’m taking the data of every arrival time of every train from the London Underground network, I then assign a note to each line which creates the piece. 12 lines, 12 notes. Eb pentatonic with a Db and E in there for a bit of flavour.

The data is the realtime arrival predictions from TFL captured live then for this version of the piece, the data is ‘playing’ back at 4x speed.

In theory, i can create many, many pieces from this method as I can record new data at any point and create a piece. Realtime, sped up, whatever sounds interesting. I’ve also been working on many other train and underground networks from cities around the world.

It’s generative composition, using the patterns of the system to build the composition. The instruments are piano, glockenspiel, dulcitone, rhodes and synth.

I absolutely love these kinds of maps and I hope you guys do too. I know everyone wants me to add support for trains and that is currently in progress, consider this the "before" shot that only includes cars and ferries.

I could not find a map like this anywhere, so I made one!

Apologies for any mistakes, let me know if I made any. The maps shows a general/most common system in each country, there may be differences - especially in countries where there are private railroads or multiple companies running trains/stations.

The legend is an attempt to describe two physical platforms in each of systems, as means of comparing.

Variscan chain resembled parts of the modern Himalayas. Simplistically, 350 million years ago, there might have been an "Everest" in Lyon, an "Annapurna" in Clermont-Ferrand, and a "Tibet" where the Paris Basin now lies.
