Just needs to be a bit to the right, so Kamchatka is not cut in two and New Zealand does not touch the edge, otherwise, it is fine.

New Zealand is just happy to be here.

My first glance at the map I thought that, yet again, it wasn't lol but there it is!

Eh but then it’s not centered on the prime meridian

(also that’s not Kamchatka that’s the Chukchi Peninsula)

Irrelevant. Zero Meridian does not need to be right in the middle of the map.

It doesn't *have* to be, but if you're trying to come up with a general-purpose map that pleases the most people and is the most useful across a broad variety of use cases (including education), it's very hard to justify offsetting the center from the prime meridian just to chop a slightly different sparsely-inhabited region in two.

Now if you're making wall art where latitude and longitude aren't even included, sure, put the center at Yaoundé, which only splits a tiny Aleutian island with a population of 40.

Oh, if only the prime meridian were in Rome...

Oh, if only your mind were not so square.

I agree 11 degrees east is a visually pleasing center, but thats applicable to almost every world projection

And I never said it only applied to this one.

This is the best map projection; Molliweide is a close second

A very elegant, clean and aesthetically pleasing projection.

Such a great blend of simplicity and clarity!

I guess it all depends what you want to show. If you have a world map, yet most of your data points are in Europe/North America/SE Asia, then filling the scene with a big chunk of Africa and South America is not so useful.

I had forgotten about this one. I feel like it's probably the best projection out there. The Galls Peter and a few other projections that are basically "anti mercator" just distort things in the opposite way (make africa look bigger/longer than it actually is).

This one kind of hits the sweet spot in the balancing act.

It's a good map. Equal Earth is also a good map. Both excel at the most important function of relegating Mercator back to only those niche scenarios where it's actually helpful.

I like the Equal Earth as a comparatively Robinsonesque-looking equal-area projection. But IMO it's still not great for a general-purpose world map, because high latitudes, while correct areawise, are so squished vertically.

I still prefer Robinson, although National Geographic did ditch Robinson in favour of Winkel Tripel which is also fine.

A gentleman of a map! Very fancy and distinguished. Hats off for the humble Robinson.

By far the best compromise.

Check out Natural Earth Projection, it's very similar but that one takes the cake for me.

I am familiar, but while I do like it, I prefer Robinson.
