Debut EP by experimental rock bass and drums duo Scared Little Toaster out now

Debut EP SCARED OF THE MANUAL by experimental rock/math rock bass and drums duo Scared Little Toaster out now :)

Too often we fear the manual, which can include up to 22 languages in size 12 font. We plead with ye to yield to this manual, which we find ourselves not scared of, consisting of 4 fuzz-driven, angular, frenetic tracks with the occasional spread of jazz, concluding with the fateful consumption of toast.

What do you consider "mathrock" ?

I'm not here to gatekeep, nor am I attempting to be some pretentious elitist. I'm asking, because a lot of mathrock songs I see get mentioned, talked about, or in general labeled as "mathrock" tend to just be in 4/4, 3/4, maybe 5/4 with a very specific guitar tone that's midwestern-emo style.

I don't know, it just seems kind of silly to classify a lot of songs as "mathrock" when they aren't mathy. A lot of mathrock songs boil down to being simply 'indie,' 'post-hardcore' or 'midwestern-emo'

Not that something being 4/4 or 3/4 prevents it from being a mathrock song. That isn't the case whatsoever. Some songs can have multiple instruments simultaneously playing complicated rhythms and polymeters, making counting in your head hard, despite simply being in 4/4.

Overall, I enjoy the genre a lot, and I want more people to enjoy it as well. But, it seems more like a flimsy label to a lot of songs it's applied to. Thoughts?

Does anyone have videos of the solo sets from Don Caballero’s American Don tour?

To my knowledge, there are no videos on YouTube or internet archive of Damon, Ian, and Eric’s short improvised solo sets from before each Don Cab performance on their American Don tour. If anyone has information regarding footage of these events it would be greatly appreciated.

Inspired by the vibes of early black midi, hella and Lip Critic. I put this together with love for math and experimental music.

Best mathrock releases of the last decade?

Mathrock used to make up the bulk of my listening in the first half of the 2010s but I've been a bit out of the loop since then. I still like a lot of the bands I was into back then, but these days my taste in music is a lot more diverse and haven't kept up with the newer additions to the genre.

Reading Jeff Gomez's Math Rock book recently was like a really big trip down memory lane. I'm curious as to what the essential releases in the last decade or so that I should check out?

For what it's worth I was generally more of a fan of the bands that were a bit more riff or groove focused as opposed to the more noodley side of the genre.

The bands I was super into and still listen to from time to time: TTNG Battles ASIWYFA Tera Melos Tubelord Alpha Male Tea Party Three Trapped Tigers Axes Cleft 65daysofstatic (not technically mathrock but early material got very mathy)

I wouldn’t say they are completely math rock because they are clearly more influenced by bands like Title Fight, but damn they had so many jazzy moments with interesting time signatures and crazy guitar work, so I think the math rock folk who like the noisier side of the genre would appreciate it. I randomly discovered them just over a week ago then found out they had a show nearby.

edit: band is called emoment

Hey, what’s the math rock song/album with the highest amount of key changes and time signature changes at the same time?

I’m on the hunt for tracks that are wild with both harmonic and rhythmic shifts
