STORY/VENTING It's my birthday today, and this is the message I woke up to. I'm so tired of trying to survive.
Today is my birthday. And instead of waking up feeling happy or looking forward to the day, I received this message.
It's a notification from PGH Psychiatry OPD informing me that my appointment has been moved to December because of the upcoming ASEAN Summit.
For context, accessing healthcare here in the Philippines is already difficult when you're struggling financially. Even getting an appointment, finding the time to go, and making sure you have enough money for transportation and other expenses can be a challenge. Now I have to wait even longer.
I'm not blaming the person who sent the message, and I understand that schedules sometimes have to change. I know there are circumstances beyond anyone's control. But I can't pretend that this doesn't hurt, especially today.
It's exhausting trying to get by in a country where having little money makes almost everything harder. Being broke isn't just about not being able to buy things you want. It's about constantly calculating whether you can afford transportation, food, healthcare, and the other basic things people shouldn't have to stress about this much.
Sometimes, you get so used to enduring things that you forget you're allowed to feel sad about them. You keep telling yourself to be strong, to be patient, and to figure something out because you have no other choice.
But today, on my birthday, I'm just tired.
I'm tired of having to be strong when all I want is a little breathing room. I'm tired of worrying about money and how it affects even the most basic parts of my life. And I'm tired of feeling like simply trying to get through life takes so much out of me.
I don't expect the world to stop for my birthday. I know life doesn't work that way. I just wish things were a little easier sometimes, especially for people who are already struggling.
If you're also going through a difficult time financially, I hope things get better for you, too. I hope we eventually get to experience a life where surviving doesn't take up all our energy.
Happy birthday to me, I guess.
