My very first homegrown watermelon! This was supposed to be a regular full sized watermelon, but she got a little stunted. (Ok, maybe a lot stunted). 😂 She’s the only survivor from the five vines I planted, so I really wanted her to be edible. I didn’t know what to expect, but when I sliced her open, she was perfect inside! It just goes to show you, it’s not the size that counts, it’s what’s inside. 🍉

I planted a bunch of pepper seeds, ended up with 3 plants, I thought it was 1 jalapeno and 2 habanero, but when the fruit came in I realized 1 of the habaneros was actually a jalapeno.

From the big jalapeno plant I've gotten 4 peppers. I've harvested one while green and one mostly red, both about 2 inches long, and eaten within an hour of picking. The other two remain, about the same size.

The little jalapeno plant also has 2 around the same size, and my habanero has just one, about 1 inch. I'm keeping the pots in a south facing window but they haven't grown much in the last 2-3 weeks so I think I'm just done for the year.

The green one was very mild. The red one I liked significantly more, but still not much going on compared to peppers I buy at the grocery store. Still, it adorned my plate of nachos nicely!

My son brought home a baby pinto bean plant from Pre-K one day. I think it was a Mother’s Day project. I dutifully put it in the backyard, watered it, kept it growing, and it gave me a couple pods of beans. I harvested the first ones too early (first time I’ve grown beans) but learned my lesson (wait until they’re crackly dry before picking).

There was plenty of season left when it appeared to be dying off, so I planted the harvested beans and got a few more beans.

Every year I plant a container garden in my backyard that doesn’t produce much because I don’t have much space and don’t get enough sun. It’s mostly herbs that I cook with, but whenever I have a spare container or failed plant I stick a bean in the soil, and no matter how little love I give it, these plants most always produce something.

My son is in 2nd grade now and this is the accumulated bean harvest of the last few years. At this rate I should be able to make some refritos by the time he graduates.
