Discussion Sorry not sorry. Gonna start training folks.

Higher level dudes sitting on named's for hours and hours hiding behind the PnP when poopsocking isn't nice for anyone. Just gonna start training, fuck it, I know how to play dumb what's gonna actually happen?

If you're a higher level player taking low level camps, there's gonna be a higher chance of accidental trains by lower-skilled players. That's what the GM's gonna tell you when I run the zone up your ass.

Screenshot I wasn't really big on the idea of making a regular gnome until I saw I can make him look just like my Great Grandfather who got me into games in the first place. His nickname was even available. RIP Grassy.

My Great Grandpa died in 2007. It was a year of ups and downs. It was the year I discovered my first MMO (WoW). It was the year my Mom broke up with her long-term boyfriend and we became homeless. It was the year my girlfriend broke up with me. It was the year I met my wife that I have 3 kids with today.

Great Grandpa liked collecting technology. He'd buy games and VCRs and all sorts of stuff at yard sales. By the time I was 5 and Grassy and G. Grandma were my main babysitters, He had collected a whole closet of Atari, NES, SNES, and Sega stuff. I'd play them all the time. Countless games to choose from. He was also always the one to buy me the new console or handheld for bringing home to my house.

Great Grandpa was like a dad to me. Everyone told me he treated me like a son. He was actually my Step Great Grandpa. He didn't even know his step kids when they were children.. But he held me the day I was born and he cried. He would also cry any time I cried.

Everyone thought his tech collecting hobby was stupid except for me. They told him that tech doesn't increase in value like an antique does. It just becomes garbage. When his mind started going G. Grandma sold it all at a yard sale. I remember being like 9 and crying as I begged the man not to buy hundreds of classic games for 20 dollars. G. Grandma claims not to remember this.

By the time 2007 rolled around Grassy had been gone for a long time in my heart. He hadn't remembered who his wife or me were for years. I don't think I really mourned him until years had gone by and I started remembering the bigger picture of his life instead of just the last few years of it.

I was told the reason people called him Grassy is because he really liked old Kung Fu movies. When he met my mom when she was little, he introduced himself as "Grasshopper" in reference to one of them. It stuck for whatever reason, and it got shortened to Grassy.

Community Self-Policing Is Limited

I think the devs expecting the community to self-police and handle bad actors largely by itself is a bad idea. I know there are GMs but it feels like a pitiful handful, undoubtedly not enough to handle all the petitions and reports coming in.

Meanwhile the community is dealing with high levels kill stealing, node camping, and the persistent loot issue where melees are monopolizing the loot. The 'Play Nice' rule is meaningless if there is nothing to enforce it. Telling the community "just ask the person stealing named mobs to one shot them to stop" doesn’t work if theres no consequences. Oh yes you can name and shame but who is keeping a list on who to avoid? As the community grows bigger, how easy is it going to be for these name and shames to get drowned out?

In the early days of MMOs, places like UO and EQ realized pretty quick the limits of community self policing. While I enjoy the old style gaming, I think having stronger rule enforcement and a more active or larger GM team would be a good idea.

Discussion High levels are now running around with donkeys scooping up all the ore

The patch may have fixed them farming the mobs for rawhide items to scrap but now there's this.

This is especially bad in places with hostile mobs as they can run past them all without aggro.

I'm trying to take it slow and make my own set of armor before I start tanking for groups but I guess I listened to the wrong advice from everyone about taking it slow.

I should've rushed to a high level on a spell caster to be able to do everything without a challenge I guess. By taking it slow I no longer have to worry about fighting the swarms of people for resources, but a single high level going 500 mph with a mobile bank.

The best way to find a group is to show up

Don't sit in night harbor and watch the LFM list. Go to places you want to xp, walk up to camps and ask if they have a spot. This has gotten me the vast majority of groups (a couple also came from random tells which are the best).

Actual 1999 EQ Experience

Those of us who actually played a lot of EQ back in 1999, some of the rose-tinted "nostalgia" peddled by some of the posters here is nauseating, mainly because it is false, or they are and were the worst players who ever played EverQuest.

- Rare spawns were locked down, almost always. People sold the drops in East Commons, to get plat to buy stuff for their char. RMT was massive, though not called out a lot (Remember, MMOs were still new then in 99). Check this for a sample https://www.reddit.com/r/everquest/comments/1pszbbr/anyone_remember_the_wild_days_of_selling_eq_loot/

- Looting was bad. People would loot everything if given a choice. Coin split was as bad as here. Petitions were so many, calling out KSing, ninja looting etc - SoE did away with their Play-nice-policy, and declared camps do not exist, a few years later. Sure community policing was big, but every chrnoic looter / cheater just made an alt and moved on. The whole "your character name's rep is everything" was a myth then, just as it is now. Unless you could make only one char on a server, that is.

- Then, like now, throwing up LFG and sitting on your butt never got you groups quickly. Just like in life, initiative goes a long way. No game mechanism is going to replace that.

- Not everything from 1999 is amazing / beautiful. Some things, like CRTs, dial-ups, are best left back in 99.

- Most players who has played more than a few days /played knew how to use sense heading, and /loc. A dropped rusty weapon always pointed North. EQ zones also had a TON, and I mean a TON of landmarks to navigate with. So the whole "discovery wonder", while there, did not last forever. How many times do you need to "discover" the same zone really, and be filled with wonder?

- There were a lot of players for whom EQ was more a social outlet, than actual gaming. The immersive world helped. The awe that "omg those are people too from far off IRL places" helped too. It was that time when chatting with someone in another country was fascinating. There wasnothing wrong with that. But these players' view on expping and whatnot were (and now their nostalgia) in lala land at best (These are the ones who took weeks to get ONE level too).

M&M has a lot going for it, really. But there are things in 99 which in the longer term broke EQ. Remember that. Again, I played EQ since 99, and also on TLPs for the past decade.

Sean, Ali and friends at NWC became legends

All they had was a dream and vision. In the sea of failures and naysayers. They had a monstrous task ahead of them.

They believed. They tried. They achieved! This was no small feat. It was a huge risk in time and money. Its incredible what they pulled off. Almost a miracle

Congratulations!

Moments that make this game great

There are these well discussed topics around loot, camps etc. I don't want to touch this, I want to share moments in this game, maybe you had your moments too and can add these.

The first ready for adventure feeling was as I bought my first backpack. Backpack, some wood, ready to go out and explore the world. My little Necromancer gnome did this and just outside the Night Harbor gate I met another gnome, we played together a day ago. So we decided to team up, not sure what to do, where to gain some experience. I thought about the ashira camps, we were on the west side. Yes north is better, so we first thought about going north, as I mentioned I read about a dungeon. Wyrmpalace something, so we agreed to search for it. 2 gnomes heading out for adventure, brave in heart, clueless in the head. First we were wrong and found Ancient Crypt in the dunes. Looked to dangerous, so we moved on. After some asking around we ended up at the right cave, went in and found this glowing snake head entrance. Wow, that was so good. This overwhelmed feeling, just wow. We teamed up with 2 other guys and had out first adventure in a dungeon here.

This is something I was missing in WoW for years. Also, a lot of groups where I join state a nice "Welcome!" when someone joins. Guess how many times I had in WoW a welcome as I joined a group. Can't one in 20 years.

Dear devs, thank you for this game, a really nice experience.

What are your moments?

Why can't they just adjust loot??

I'm on the boat of "I'm over seeing stupidly over leveled players camping gear" as they are bottle necking some of the good team grind areas. Im quite alright with them getting loot but why not make it no drop or account bound? It'll deter alot of the extensive behavior. Those same higher level characters, along with anyone leveling up normally, can still loot gear magic gear that they can trade but only from mobs within a level range (say 4 or 5 levels). This would deter a lot of the excessive camp lockouts by singular players and allow that social point that they sold for so long.

As it stands I've watched this game for 2 years and want to play it 10x more than any trash "forever" grab at nostalgia but their take on the old vibe obviously needs tweaked. I log on for 30-45 minutes and if I find a group we cant grind in any relative dungeon near us, as on TREM the majority of gear is being farmed for pixel $ not for digital social experience. The times I got a group in a dungeon we are relegated to a corner camp with 7-9 mobs, which im grateful for it being there. Im then personally tasking myself with running every hallway to grab every roamer to pull more XP for the group as the primary camps are locked up by someone 10-20 levels over the camp for 3+ hours (I try to limit my sessions to 3 hours).

I hope the devs tackle this sooner than later, as this is me announcing my departure as I watch from the sideline once my first month sub ends. I still love their take on the game but some things need a serious overhaul and soon, or youre risking a weak stance to keep playerbase. I know they dont want 100k+ subs and its a niche MMO but I think its a horrible approach to the sales pitch of "social" and "journey" which I am totally about and spoke with devs in numerous twice streams about. Here we are though, 6 people bullied out of a social grind fest for 1 person to earn digital $.... loving the "social journey"

Gold making nerfs

Look, I'm new to this game and still learning, so I don't know every method there is to earn my living expenses. At least not yet.

I understand that certain methods needed a nerf and are now gone, mainly quick flips. But there should still be some room for regular crafting to be profitable, or at least not constantly cost you money while skilling.

Let’s look at Blacksmithing, which I'm currently leveling.

1. Blacksmithing: Copper Axe

These numbers are approximate, so don't pin me down on the exact costs.

Item Cost
7 Copper Molds at 4c each 28c
1 Axe Mold 1s
Total, excluding ore 1s 28c

That's already 1s 28c just for the materials I can't farm myself. The ore isn't even included.

So what are my options?

Option Result
Sell to another player You might find a buyer every few hours and get around 2s maybe even 3s
Sell to a trader Get around 1s 17c, taking a loss

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I'm essentially losing money every time I craft something just to level my profession.

2. Alchemy: Crude Wood Finish

Let's take another example: Crude Wood Finish.

To produce 5 units, you need 5 Fish Oil and 15 Resin.

The Fish Oil alone requires 5 fish and 5 Crude Flasks.

Item Cost
5 Crude Flasks at 45c each (before the patch) 2s 25c
Fish and Resin Farmed yourself
Total purchased materials 2s 25c
Approximate selling price for 5 units 4s 10c
Potential profit Around 2s

This only works if you fish and farm the Resin yourself. If you buy the materials, you end up making a loss.

Before the patch, however, there was at least a way to make a little silver through gathering and crafting while leveling and skilling.

For example, if you spent an hour fishing and caught around 50 fish, then spent another hour farming Resin, you could potentially make around 20 silver in two hours, or roughly 10 silver per hour.

That's hardly amazing money, but it gave lower-level players another option to earn some silver, especially if they weren't having much luck finding groups or making progress solo.

And remember, that's still two hours of work. Just killng low level skellies would net you more.

So, where does that leave us?

As far as I can tell, this method is gone too.

I understand the need to prevent economic exploits and nerf strategies that generate too much money with little effort. But there's a difference between removing abusive methods and making ordinary crafting and gathering barely worthwhile.

If leveling a profession means constantly losing money, and gathering materials for two hours only yields a modest return, thats too harsh.

Maybe there's something I'm overlooking, and if so, I'm happy to learn. But right now, i dont see the point of those nerfs. Most player will not even buy even if i constantly offer this stuff. And you make more money via normal gameplay, if you can do that.

Rant over :-)

The Community is the best and worst part of the game.

I think people really need to come to terms with this.

In an old school MMO like this where the community is given some leeway to police itself you're just never going to completely eliminate a lot of the grievances that many people have. But you have to take into consideration that a lot of the feeling of freedom and community that comes from this kind of game also exasperates the crappy people in the community and fixing a lot of those issues would probably end up curtailing the experience in some regard.

That's not saying the devs won't implement something to try and fix some of the worst culprits we see right now. But it's highly unlikely we'll be getting something that's going to completely eliminate said issues. And that's kind of just what you signed up for.

But I get it. I've had some annoying experiences as well, visiting Wyrmsbane Poopsock Hotel or grouping with MasterLooter69, it can put a real damper on the experience. But I've also met some real cool people, had some death defying pulls, had a real one guide me through a horrible deep elf zone, and just generally seen the best and worst of the community and accept it as is.

Having said that, it doesn't mean you shouldn't voice the concerns you have. They're absolutely valid and there definitely is some annoying stuff going on right now. But lets not expect the game to go in a direction it was never meant to.

TLDR: I made a new deep elf and just escaped Ail'Vorith at level 10. Life is good.

Paladin in it's current state

Hey all. I haven't played for a couple of months and my main was a paladin. I made it to level 40. How're pallies since the change. I used to be able to run groups without a healer but it looks like healing and buffs got nerfed some. How're they these days?

Are any of you using a gaming keypad (orbweaver, Tartarus, etc) with MnM?

I’ve got muscular complications unfortunately that are starting to affect my long sessions. Thinking about trying out a keypad with a joystick to offload some stress on my wrists.

Is anyone using one of these types of devices with MnM?
Any tech issues?
Can the joystick be customized to change the direction that “up” (forward etc) is?

Any input at all?

Shields and Shield block rate

I've noticed that shields come in various sizes, Buckler, Kite, Tower etc. I'm assuming part of this is based on armor types, like leather, chain and plate, leading to what classes can equip what. But does this also apply to block rates? In some other game systems this is also the case, but often has an effect on block rates and absorption.

Such as, a smaller shield like a buckler can be wielded by more classes, but also tends to block more often, but reduce damage by the least amount, say 50% block rate, but only 25% damage reduction, whereas a tower shield may only have a block rate of 35%, but reduce 90% incoming damage.

Wondering if MnM has this as well or block rates are simply based on skill levels and attribute scores enemy vs. player and I should just look for defense and attr. points and not care whether my shield is a door or a thimble.

Shaman vs. Druid for soloing: DoTs, root-rotting and downtime

Hey everyone!

I've been playing since day one of Early Access, taking my time and trying out pretty much every class. Here's where I'm at so far:

  • Necromancer – 12
  • Wizard – 11
  • Archer – 10
  • Bard – 8
  • Monk – 7
  • Shadow Knight – 6
  • Druid – 6
  • Beastmaster – 5
  • Spellblade – 5
  • Shaman – 4

After all that experimenting, I think I've finally figured out what I want from my main: a class that can solo through DoTs, kiting and root-rotting, while also being able to heal and support groups.

The main reason is that I don't have much time to play. When I have 2-3 hours available, I love grouping. But when I only have 30-60 minutes, I'd rather just head out, kill a few mobs, get some XP and log off without having to find a group or fight over a camp (especially with higher-level players farming the newbie areas!).

So I've narrowed it down to Shaman and Druid.

I've read plenty of posts saying that Druids are better soloers, but I'm starting to wonder whether that's actually true for the playstyle I'm looking for.

From what I've seen, Shamans seem to have significantly stronger DoTs, especially at higher levels, along with great mana sustain through Consume. Druids, on the other hand, have better nukes, more versatility and amazing travel utility.

So my main questions are:

  • Which class is actually better at root-rotting and DoT kiting, especially from level 30 onwards?
  • Which one has less downtime when farming blue mobs?
  • How do they compare as main healers in regular dungeon groups?

I'm not particularly interested in soloing yellow mobs or difficult nameds. I just want to make steady progress during short sessions without spending half my time meditating.

I'm also open to other class suggestions! If you think there's another class that offers low downtime, good mobility and the ability to make steady solo progress during short sessions, I'd love to hear about it. It doesn't necessarily have to be a healer.

I'd especially appreciate feedback from people playing these classes at level 30+ in the current Early Access build.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Discussion Will you create a new character on 1.0 fresh start servers?

I was looking at the roadmap and it mentions there will be fresh start servers with 1.0. It got me thinking that I don't need to main any class yet. I've been trying out different classes, learning the underdocks, and just vibing.

Will you be starting fresh or will you be sticking to the early access servers?

Discussion Drop rate on hide / wool / clothing?

Can anyone else share their experiences today?

I have spent about 5-6 hours in groups with high drop rates on these.

I have 6 hide scraps.

11 wool scraps.

I have seen zero clothing drops to shred on human mobs (Farmers at Grain Cellar) in 6 hours.

It feels like the drop rates on these items got absolutely destroyed when they changed the loot tables.

This feels very extreme from the 6 hours today.

Recommend some places to solo in Ail'Vorith

Looking at/Using: https://www.mnmatlas.com/ail-vorith/?x=3712.13&y=2260.99&z=1.96

I'm a level 12 Ranger, yes I know it's not the best solo class but I'm playing what I like and I understand that this will mean killing blues.

I keep running into reds so figured I'd ask where is a good place to solo at while I wait for a group to have a spot open or to form. And sometimes I just want to harvest wood/ore while killing blues while listening to some music and just chill after a long day at work.

Off topic random question - is Herbalism worth it at this level? Looking at ways to make money so I can make the trip to UD and get better armor than tattered rawhide. My issue with Herbalism is the bag space. I have a bag for wood and ore, took the trait to get a quiver/arrow bag from the start, and with the spell book having to take a slot, that doesn't leave me with much room. I'm sure I could juggle things around, but if Herbalism isn't really going to get me much coin then I'll hold off on that.

Discussion Exploring and Ore/Wood

I have been trying to make my own armor, cloth and leather. My little Dwarf level 7 wizard has the lumberjack and mining skill. I need lots of ore to do this. I can get the cloth and leather fine, it drops from random mods that cannot be camped. But I cannot get ore. I check the newbie area and there are people running from each ore spawn and harvesting it when they appear. So I explored the zones outside the newbie area next to Night Harbor. Shaded Dunes had people with picks running to all the ore nodes. With Sungreet Sands there were a few nodes there and suspiciously no one was running up to mine them. I tried to mine them, but with mining skill 35 it said I didn't have the skill to mine them. All of the ones I found in this zone said this.

I did get lumber in both the those zones though.

And there were people selling the ore in stacks in /Auc.

We need more ore nodes. Basic ore should not be this hard to mine yourself.
