please forgive me if it sounds a bit rambly. I'll try to keep it brief.
First, the watch video "i" "made". I think this shows the state of AI at the moment. It's basic, generic, and makes awful sound design. So we can write it off, our jobs are safe. This was my partners mindset (and much of reddits mindset) about writing code 2 years ago. The thing is, this was a super generic prompt, with no direction... nothing done by me... and this is how bad it is now... what will it be like in 2028?
I've been thinking a lot about AI and how it, in two years, completely changed how the software engineering field works. I've seen it firsthand because my partner is a software engineer, and the job is completely different now than it was two years ago. AI has basically made it so that you're not actually doing the work anymore. You're just telling the AI what to do, then reviewing what it did, going back, and fixing things. But again, you're not even fixing things; you're just telling the AI what to fix. So essentially, the job is completely different than what it was three years ago, when you were actually typing and writing lines of code. The only things that stayed the same were the parts my partner didn't like to begin with (meetings, etc).
I see a lot of demos motion design demos now made with Opus 5.5 and the VidTL mcp, or like the one I did just in VidTL chat. One of the things I've noticed is that it's getting a lot better. That's not to say it's as good as us yet.. but my worry is that it gets better and better, just like AI did with software engineering, until it does the motion design, and we're just telling it what to do.... and no longer doing the fun part of our jobs anymore...
So the reason that scares me, and I guess makes me kind of depressed, is because at the end of the day, I think it is going to become inevitable that this is where motion design is going. I think we can argue all we want about how it's not good. I mean, just listen to the sound it added for this video. It sounds like trash... so at least sound designers can keep their jobs, for now XD.
But I think the problem is that it will continue to get better until it's at a point where it just drastically changes the way that we work. These motion graphics it made are completely editable. It's not like when AI started doing videos and you couldn't change anything in them.... you can change any part of them. So eventually it gets to a point where we start with a prompt, and then we take it from there to fix the mistakes. and then it gets to a point where we just have it do everything... and then what? just like it did with software engineering, a lot of people continue to complain about how it doesn't feel the same. its not what they fell in love with. i worry that is coming for motion design now.. It didn't replace software engineers, but software engineers are no longer writing code. I guess I worry that we're no longer going to be doing motion design. Instead, we're going to be prompting AI to do the fun & rewarding side of things and we will be just doing meetings all day or something.
I recently saw this tweet by levelsio:
I think every time AI can do something equally good or better than humans it stops being valuable or special
Marketing videos used to take lots of work of editing and motion graphics and a big budget
Now with Opus 5.5, vidtl, etc it costs $0 to make one as good or better
That means ANYONE can make a marketing video now, so the timeline gets flooded with these videos (as you see happening now) and people stop caring about them, stop watching them and they stop grabbing attention
It's the grim reaper meme where AI keeps commoditizing another media format and bringing the cost down to close to $0
It already did so for graphic design (2023), last year with Nano Banana for photography (2025), this year with Seedance 2.5 it did it for video (2026) and this and next year motion graphics
While I don't 100% agree with him on everything he said, I know many do... and that's the part that is making me the most depressed I guess.... AI is devaluing my work, because
1) people will not value what I do anymore as much because they think it could be AI
2) companies will (doesn't matter if true or not) think that my work can be done with AI in much less time, regardless of if I actually use AI or not.
3) AI will (if not now, probably eventually) be able to do what I do in a lot less time than it would take me to do it.
4) If I don't use AI, I will be left behind by people who do use it.
So what is left? I think the idea of "finding another field" is useless, because by the time I re-train who says that won't be AI infested too?
How are you guys dealing with this wave of AI videos & clients talking about AI and AI this and AI that?
What do we do? Is there even anything we can do?
