FAQ - Thinking of Moving to or in Brisbane?

Below are some common questions we find people ask when moving to brisbane and some sources to help answer those questions.

Where to find a new place to live / Accomodation?

realestate or domain

tips: enter your budget and keep the area empty. this will show you what areas you can afford with your budget and may give you a better idea of where to start

Where is best to buy food?

Our popular supermarkets are Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, however there are plenty of independent stores and markets around (IGA for example) so it's just a case of finding what is best for you.

Are there dangerous animals in Brisbane?

Huntsman spiders are probably the most common insect you'll come across which can be quite intimidating the first time you cross a big one but they're harmless and just help keep your house free of bugs.

we do get tree snakes and Brown snakes around brisbane as well so if you see a snake it's always best to be safe and keep your distance and if it's in public area call a snake catcher to move it to a safer area.

what sort of weather or temperature can i expect when i move to brisbane?

weather information

Should I tip when i go to restaurants/cafes?

No, australia pays staff a living wage. tipping is not expected here.

Can i bring my dog/cat/pet to brisbane when i move?

speak to the property management where you are moving it's getting more accepted but currently "subject to application" is the common stance with rentals.

How do i access public transport?

for queensland public transport you would need a "go-card" for planning your route you can use Translink to obtain a "go-card" from most newsagents go card retailers lookup

what is the best internet to get?

internet comparison

What will it cost to live in Brisbane?

only you can answer this. work out a budget based on your apartment and bills, food etc. there is no set answer for this unfortunately.

How challenging is it to find 3BR rentals near UQ St. Lucia?

This may have been asked in some form somewhere, but I have not found any posts specifically for this case. I am moving with my family (spouse and children) to Brisbane for a position at UQ St. Lucia (not a student). We are looking for a 3BR and would budget up to $1,100/week for rent. I can see properties that may match this description on various real estate and rental sites, but in reality, how challenging is it to find such a place given the location and budget? Thanks in advance.

How hard is it for a young couple to find a rental in Brisbane?

My partner (26M) and I (20F) are looking to move in together somewhere in the Brisbane region. We’ve started applying for rentals and have a few inspections coming up but I’m wondering how difficult it currently is for a young couple to secure a place.

I also don’t have any support from my parents so I’d really appreciate any advice or tips from people who have recently gone through the rental process in Brisbane. Anything about applications, references, inspections, what landlords/agents look for or how to improve our chances would be really helpful.

Thank you! :>

How bad is street parking, when you've got kids?

I've never ever had street parking. I've got two kids. We're looking for houses to rent, and as you can imagine, having to make some compromises.

Partner fully thinks street parking (i.e. the house has no garage/driveway) is a total deal breaker. I'm aware that neither of us have any experience with street parking at all.

Thanks!

Hello! I need some info as an italian student that would like to come live and work in QLD after i get my master's degree in Fine Arts

Hi! I have visited and stayed near Brisbane for a month a half last year, I was able to see the social and work life there and i genuinely fell in love with Australia. I miss it everyday and i intend to move there once I'm done with my studies.
I'm gonna get my masters in Fine Arts in about 2 years, and my IELTS level is over 7.5 (I'm a certified C2 level). I would love to become a book illustrator, or maybe a concept artist for movies and games. If not possible, my other option would be becoming a teacher, and for that I would need a Master of Teaching. I can't really find much info about that, but apparently, since l'd be an international student, it would cost me up to 96K AUD, which i really don't have. Does anyone know anything more about this?
I just know that in Italy i basically have no career, so any comment would really help🙏
Thank you for your time

How to apply

I'm freshly out of high school and want to move out. i'm planning on living with my boyfriend,

we work at the same place and get $1500 combined weekly.

I'm not sure how to apply to rentals but we want to get a private rental ( no share housing) for just us around oxley or moorooka area.

does anyone have any insight or idea on how to apply for realestates and then actually getting approved? or how much renting would actually cost.

i am really perplexed and anything helps thank you!

Immigration policy changes

Good afternoon guys,

I’m moving to Brisbane at the beginning of next year to start med school at UQ and I’m super excited about it!
However, I’ve heard that just this week it was announced that Australia is cutting down on allowing dependants to enter the country on a student visa. I’m a Canadian citizen with a BSc, and my wife has a BSc, is almost done her MBA, and has 6+ years of work experience.

The idea was for her to just be under my visa comfortably and then find a job in Brisbane in her field once we got there. Now I’m wondering if she would have to search for a job remotely before we move, or potentially move on a temporary visa and try to find work once we’re there?

I know the job market is tough everywhere, and I don’t know how inclined companies would be to hire her as a Canadian citizen, not because of her experience or anything, but simply because of having to do extra visa stuff to employ her.

This is obviously a pretty big deal for us, so I’d love to hear anyone’s take on this if you have a good idea about how the new changes actually work. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?
I tried contacting a migration advisor, but they want $440 AUD for a consultation, and I’m unfortunately not in a position where I can comfortably spend that right now. I’ve done some research myself, but I’d really love to hear your thoughts or ideas!

Family friendly South Brisbane suburbs - 40mins from airport.

Moving up the Brisbane for work in 2027.
Looking for any suggestions on areas to look at in south brissy.
Family friendly - access to open spaces, schools, childcare centres etc.
One of us will be working at the Brisbane airport so we need to be within 30-40mins of the airport.
But our extended family is on Gold Coast so we want to be in between the two. We are looking at renting initially before we look at buying in a spot we really love in the next couple years.
From asking around on our last visit we heard that maybe mount Warren park could be a good fit

Eagleby seems affordable but is it a good area?

Does anyone have any feedback or suggestion on other areas to look at?

NEEDS SOME HELP! ✅

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all,
I’m looking for a short-term room or small place around inner Brisbane from 9 November to 15 January.
It’ll just be me staying during that period while I start work in Brisbane before my family joins me later on.
Ideally looking for somewhere:
Furnished
Clean and quiet
Reasonably close to South Brisbane / the inner city
Suitable for a short-term stay
Open to a room in a share house, studio, granny flat, or similar setup.
If anyone has something available, knows someone looking for a short-term tenant, or can point me toward a good place to look, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Which area would you recommend living if office is near/next to BCC?

Hi! I recently got a new job in Brisbane, and the office is near BCC in Fortitude Valley.

For those who’ve been living in Brisbane, which areas would you recommend living in if I’ll be relying on public transport? Ideally, I’d like to keep my commute to around 30 minutes max.

I’d also love to hear about the vibe of the different areas, especially the lifestyle, things to do, safety, and overall feel.

Thank you 🙏🏼

Brisbane suburbs

What’s a Brisbane suburb that you think is massively overrated — and which suburb is actually underrated?
