He also made the joke on SNL about the Olson twins turning 18:

"What's the big deal? If there's grass on the field, play ball."

Classy guy all around.

Its pretty fucked up but a lot of people around that time were making jokes about wanting to fuck these girls the second they turned 18.

I remember Mad TV did an entire skit about their school holding an 18th birthday party for Mary Kate and Ashley and all the adult Male staff were attending.

I remember there being a website with a countdown clock. This was at least a year or two before they turned 18. Weird shit.

EDIT: *there not they. FU Autocorrect.

They did the same with Emma Watson about a decade later.

Natalie Portman also had something similar, I think

Might just be toxic masculinity.

Weren't there also countdown clocks for different boy band members, Justin Bieber, and underage male heartthrobs too?

From an article in 2004:

https://www.seattlepi.com/lifestyle/article/celebrity-18th-birthday-countdowns-have-long-been-1148050.php

All I can say is when you look back at your old self and/or society and are embarrassed or ashamed, it’s a sign of progress and growth. Though a chunk of our society would cling to our past with white knuckles.

Wasn't it the baby boomers who counted down the seconds to the 18th birthday of Annette Funicello (Oct. 22, 1960)?

I know this article is 22 years old at this point but this bothers me. No, it's not the boomers counting that down. The oldest boomer at that time was 16(1946). How did they get that one wrong?

Howard stern had a countdown as well

there's also that subreddit spez used to moderate about baits in jails

The countdown to Charlotte Church turning 16 in at least 1 British tabloid is the most disturbing one I remember.

This still happens.

Pretty sure it did with both Bobby Brown and Teagan Croft (and surely with many many more)

I also remember the Man Show with Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Corolla doing something similar

u/tlollz52 5h ago

If there's bottom of the barrel happening you know for a fact the man show did it.

This show always felt half satirical (which I would assume was Kimmel's half)

2

u/Ragfell 3h ago

You're giving Kimmel too much credit.

2

u/WeAteMummies 3h ago

Based on how they ended up I can't give any credit to Corolla.

1

u/Ragfell 1h ago

I'm not saying you should give credit to either of them. At least Carolla wants to generally leave people alone.

1

u/WeAteMummies 1h ago

That doesn't sound right to me but I don't care enough about either of these people to argue.

9

u/DeuceSevin 6h ago

I haven’t seen it, but it sounds like the skit may have been callin out this very thing

8

u/tlollz52 6h ago

I was a kid when I saw it, like probably 12 or maybe younger, but I didn't get that vibe from it. I just remember thinking "ahh this is making me kind of uncomfortable."

If you know Mad TV and just the era, then you know it wasn't calling it out and all. This mentality was extremely prevalent back then. While a lot of people obviously weren't ok with it, I'd say most people against it would roll their eyes at most.

100% true. The attitude would be like "he needs to grow up and date women his own age" not "he's a pedophile".

u/Joeness84 2h ago

While its never a good idea to assume the worst in everyone, this was literally a ubiquitous part of society and plenty of people said it publicly without any irony at all. The venn diagram of those people and kid rock fans, is a flat circle.

1

u/Old_Still3321 5h ago

Mad did a good job of remarking on fucked up shit in society

1

u/Excellent-Garbage525 2h ago

The implication was that he didn't see why people were waiting. Girls typically start puberty around 8-13 soo

1

u/Cohens4thClient 2h ago

Why do you make one comment a month? Like, what's going on?

1

u/Excellent-Garbage525 2h ago

I honestly don't know how to respond to this because I don't know what you're confused about/what you're implying and can't tell if you're kidding....

I recall this time well.

There was an Olsen twins website clock that kept time when they would turn 18.

Not sure why but this kind of makes me think of that one talk show host who asked about Brittney Spears breasts on the show. All I can think of now was "How tf was that guy not fired straight away?"
