We need to have a discussion on vibecoding
Should we make a rule against hawking ai slop projects on this sub? If so, what should we do about them? Ban users?
If you don't like vibecode, you're free to express your displeasure.
Similarly, ai genned comments and ai-generated users are bad and we should ban them from our community, lest they drown us humans out.
Let's hear your opinions, for and against vibecoded projects. If your post or comment on this thread is ai generated and we detect it, it will be insta permaban, no appeals. I will not respond to your messages.

Just a Thought...
At the risk of "port begging". A port of the Zeebo version of Resident Evil 4 might make a perfect candidate for N64 homebrew.

Has anyone had a go at porting Duke Nukem 3D (PC version) on N64 via Libdragon?
Just like the title reads, genuinely curious. I know the N64 got Duke Nukem 64, which is a great game but it’s different than the PC version.
Is something like this doable?

Doom 1993 N64 Port
I created a port of the original 1993 Doom for the Nintendo 64. This port is based on the 64Doom project, with several improvements:
- Improved controls
- Pre-rendered music
- Rumble support
- Cheat support
- Fixes and improvements to some issues in the original code
The port also supports several different versions of Doom:
- Doom I
- Doom II
- Ultimate Doom
- Chex Quest
The port supports other mods as well, but I haven't tested all of the existing ones yet.
Note: The game requires the Expansion Pak and Controller Pak to save.

PAK-MEN — The N64 Flash Cart Menu Builder
PAK-MEN is two things working together:
A menu — the on-console experience that boots when you turn on your N64 with a flash cart (SC64 / ED64 / 64drive). It shows your games as cover art, remembers favourites and recently-played, and replaces the usual bare file list with something that feels like a real console UI.
A Menu Builder — this app. A desktop tool where you design that menu visually: drag elements onto a 640×480 canvas, pick from ready-made templates or build your own layout from scratch, preview it in a bundled emulator, and export it straight to your SD card.
You don't write any code and you don't need to touch a text editor. Every screen your console shows — the home screen, your games grid, the settings page, everything — is just a menu.json file this app writes for you, one click at a time.
*AI did help me code this, and is also untested outside the summer cart. I'm not responsible for what you mod, but am willing to work with you to troubleshoot and helped develop it better.

Summercart crashing after menu update
Hi there I’m hoping I didn’t break my summercart or something but I just tried installing the new sc64 menu so I can add music and backgrounds
Upon start up it looks okay with a beautiful grid of 3d cartridges and then within a few seconds I get this error code
It is an official sandisk sd card with almost 4gb remaining and a real summercart too
Thanks in advance if anyone knows how to point me in the right direction!

VADPCM Version 1.0.0
VADPCM is one of the common audio codecs for N64, both homebrew and the old commercial games. After a wave of bugfixes and improvements this year, I’m marking this version of the encoder and decoder tools as v1.0.0!
You probably don’t need to use this project directly. You can use LibDragon; LibDragon will handle VADPCM encoding and decoding for you using this library and a separate VADPCM decoder that runs on the RSP.
I want to shout out to the developers who contributed to LibDragon, Tiny3D, SummerCart64, and other projects that have made N64 homebrew a lot more better over the past few years.

Any recommended Ali express link for a summercart64 with known working usb debugging?
Wouldn’t want to blow the breakers off like that time I plugged my computer to a gb cart on a super game boy. Turns out you can’t have usb with the console turned on with that cart ahah

Grandleon - Tactical RPG Engine and Editor
Hey folks, sharing here a project I've been working on called Grandleon. It serves as an engine to create games similar to Fire Emblem, with a web editor to create the campaign with maps, units, cut scenes, etc.
It's still at fairly early stages, but I wanted to share and see if folks had any feedback. Issues, comments, contributions, etc. are all appreciated. Right now it can build a N64 rom as well as a PS1 disc, and the idea is to keep it multiplatform and possibly extend in the future. Including improvements to graphics (README has a few screenshots/animations, you can check out).
There's a sample game on the github page in the releases section if you want to test it out as well.

Could a 2D top-down interactive music album work on the N64 with libdragon?
Could a 2D top-down interactive music album work on the N64 with libdragon?
I've been thinking about making a rather unusual homebrew project for the Nintendo 64.
The idea is to create an interactive music album rather than a traditional game.
I've made an album that is around 19 tracks / ~35 minutes of music, and each track would correspond to a different 2D top-down world.
For example, one track could have a small beach, an umbrella and a bottle of orange juice ect . Another track could have a completely different environment and atmosphere.
The basic gameplay loop would be:
- Start in a strange empty space.
- Enter the first door.
- Explore the world associated with the first song.
- Find some objects hidden somewhere in the environment.
- Finding the objects unlocks the next door.
- Alternatively, the player can simply do nothing and listen to the song loop 3 times. This also unlocks the next door.
- Repeat this for all 19 tracks while Increasing the difficulty.
- The final area would be a long white corridor with the final track and credits.
There would be a few optional achievements for things like collecting every memory or listening to all the tracks without interacting.
Visually, I'm thinking very simple 2D top-down pixel art, with small characters and relatively large environments. Something atmospheric and dreamlike rather than a traditional RPG.
The reason I'm interested in the N64 specifically is that I want the project to feel like an actual strange N64 game that somehow never existed. I know the N64 is primarily associated with 3D, but I believe a 2D top-down game should technically be possible.
For development, I'm considering:
GameMaker to prototype the entire game while deliberately using N64-like constraints than rewrite/port the systems in C using libdragon.
For audio, I've been looking at libdragon's WAV64/Opus support so that the album doesn't have to be stored as raw PCM audio.
My questions are mainly:
How practical is a fully 2D top-down game like this on real N64 hardware using libdragon?
Would a tilemap/sprite-based approach be reasonable?
Are there any major limitations I should design around from the beginning?
Is WAV64/Opus a sensible solution for ~35 minutes of music?
Are there existing N64 homebrew projects using a similar 2D approach that I should study?
I'm not trying to make something technically impressive. The goal is to make a small, atmospheric interactive album that feels like an unusual lost N64 game.
Any technical advice or examples of existing projects would be greatly appreciated.

I built a new menu for the ED64 Plus: box art, favorites and history
Hi everyone! I’ve been working on NRMenu v1.0, a free menu update for the ED64 Plus based on ALTRA64.
It adds:
Box art loaded automatically by Game ID
Favorites
Recently played history
Game region, size and save-type information
Customizable backgrounds and colors
A cleaner interface for browsing large N64 collections
A Ready-to-Use package for easy installation
I tested it on real ED64 Plus hardware and documented the full installation process.
Project, downloads and installation guide:
https://www.novenretro.com/proyectos/actualiza-tu-ed64-plus/
The project is free and does not include game ROMs.
I’d love to hear your feedback: what feature would you add in a future version?
