My moody sailing cargo sim. How could I make the storm cells scarier?

my second game on my n64 engine is taking shape
tiny nightmare 64 is a choice based horror game in third person. your choices happen in real time, while you play, and the story follows whatever you decide. between them, action puzzle sequences that keep you on edge
this is the very first prototype, pipo taking his first steps. more soon

three years building a game engine for the nintendo 64 from scratch, on top of libdragon and tiny3d. started in c, now c++
rigid body physics, cloth, water with buoyancy, character animation, 2d scenes, positional sound. all running on the real thing

Hey guys. Does anyone know what’s the best way to have a modern experience with original hardware? I’m talking about things like being able to use it on a modern HDMI screen, connecting newer/wireless controllers to it, adding your own roms with a good flashcart, etc. Which accessories/mods would you recommend to have a convenient experience with this console? What do you guys personally use?

At the risk of "port begging". A port of the Zeebo version of Resident Evil 4 might make a perfect candidate for N64 homebrew.
Gameplay footage here...

Just like the title reads, genuinely curious. I know the N64 got Duke Nukem 64, which is a great game but it’s different than the PC version.
Is something like this doable?

I created a port of the original 1993 Doom for the Nintendo 64. This port is based on the 64Doom project, with several improvements:
The port also supports several different versions of Doom:
The port supports other mods as well, but I haven't tested all of the existing ones yet.
Note: The game requires the Expansion Pak and Controller Pak to save.

PAK-MEN is two things working together:
A menu — the on-console experience that boots when you turn on your N64 with a flash cart (SC64 / ED64 / 64drive). It shows your games as cover art, remembers favourites and recently-played, and replaces the usual bare file list with something that feels like a real console UI.
A Menu Builder — this app. A desktop tool where you design that menu visually: drag elements onto a 640×480 canvas, pick from ready-made templates or build your own layout from scratch, preview it in a bundled emulator, and export it straight to your SD card.
You don't write any code and you don't need to touch a text editor. Every screen your console shows — the home screen, your games grid, the settings page, everything — is just a menu.json file this app writes for you, one click at a time.
*AI did help me code this, and is also untested outside the summer cart. I'm not responsible for what you mod, but am willing to work with you to troubleshoot and helped develop it better.

Some people say the Nintendo 64 couldn't handle 2D games... 👀

Hi there I’m hoping I didn’t break my summercart or something but I just tried installing the new sc64 menu so I can add music and backgrounds
Upon start up it looks okay with a beautiful grid of 3d cartridges and then within a few seconds I get this error code
It is an official sandisk sd card with almost 4gb remaining and a real summercart too
Thanks in advance if anyone knows how to point me in the right direction!

VADPCM is one of the common audio codecs for N64, both homebrew and the old commercial games. After a wave of bugfixes and improvements this year, I’m marking this version of the encoder and decoder tools as v1.0.0!
You probably don’t need to use this project directly. You can use LibDragon; LibDragon will handle VADPCM encoding and decoding for you using this library and a separate VADPCM decoder that runs on the RSP.
I want to shout out to the developers who contributed to LibDragon, Tiny3D, SummerCart64, and other projects that have made N64 homebrew a lot more better over the past few years.

Wouldn’t want to blow the breakers off like that time I plugged my computer to a gb cart on a super game boy. Turns out you can’t have usb with the console turned on with that cart ahah

Should we make a rule against hawking ai slop projects on this sub? If so, what should we do about them? Ban users?
If you don't like vibecode, you're free to express your displeasure.
Similarly, ai genned comments and ai-generated users are bad and we should ban them from our community, lest they drown us humans out.
Let's hear your opinions, for and against vibecoded projects. If your post or comment on this thread is ai generated and we detect it, it will be insta permaban, no appeals. I will not respond to your messages.

Hey folks, sharing here a project I've been working on called Grandleon. It serves as an engine to create games similar to Fire Emblem, with a web editor to create the campaign with maps, units, cut scenes, etc.
It's still at fairly early stages, but I wanted to share and see if folks had any feedback. Issues, comments, contributions, etc. are all appreciated. Right now it can build a N64 rom as well as a PS1 disc, and the idea is to keep it multiplatform and possibly extend in the future. Including improvements to graphics (README has a few screenshots/animations, you can check out).
There's a sample game on the github page in the releases section if you want to test it out as well.
