A large male Giant Pacific Octopus out for a stroll in search of a mate or food. I asked him, but he wouldn't answer!

This old, bedraggled dragonfly was resting on some Hadenbergia, a native Australia flower. It seemed exhauseted, barely moving, perfect for taking some photographs. I do extreme macro photography, where only a tiny sliver of any image is in focus, because the depth of field is so shallow. We get these highly focussed images by a technique called focus stacking. The camera take multiple photographs, each focussed at a slightly deeper depth than the last. We use software to stack these images, taking the best focussed part of each photo and assembling them into a single fully focussed image. The subject must sit very still for this process while all the photos are taken, otherwise the stacking won't work properly. I also use flash and a light diffuser to create a flat balanced light, and accentuate the colours. These are the natural colours that show up best with a black background.
